The non-stop option in the practice rom allows you to not exit stages on star grab.
Again, this is all on the category rules for non-stop, (Navigate to Mario64 category extensions leaderboards, select "Nonstop" from the drop down menu, click on "Show rules" then "Category rules"), and there's a video on the usumane page showing you how to set up the Wii virtual console.
Category rules in non-step page refer you to the usumane practice rom (MISC > PRESET > NONSTP); available on the usumane site, along with a link to an instructional youtube video on how to set it up for Wii virtual console.
@SPG29 - Best bet any time you have a thought like that is to navigate to the category in question, click "Show rules" then "Category rules". It will break down what is and isn't allowed:
16 Star Rules
Beat the game as quickly as possible with the following restrictions:
Gameplay Restrictions:
All forms of Side BLJ are banned
Any method to skip the 30 star door other than MIPS Clip is banned
No one will play, or watch, such a category, as it currently stands. Unless something hitherto unknown is discovered and a reasonably quick setup is found that works in regular (non-PAL), this is still just a curiosity.
@ChiaraSM64 There's a few topics like that. There's a saying about dead horses that applies. Putting aside this one was posted in the wrong area (Category extensions).
I also see people come by every 6 months or so to ask if 1-key will ever happen RTA.
100% agree with tatowe.
Siglemic's 1:43:53 120 star world record was considered god tier; and for the time and the strats it was. But there's been a lot of improvements since then.
Suigi's 1:35:28 would not be possible without: Carpetless, Chip clip, HMC BLJ, GTM slide, Wilko clip, Assless... plus a whole heap of other improvements that have been found over the years that would take way too long to list.
@KilleDragon Crackslide yeah. Great trick, Bubzia's already got a sub 10 minute in blindfolded 1 star using it. Much more of a consistent set-up.
From my understanding, you'll fly off the railing way before you have sufficient speed to pull off a DDD skip, so it's not feasible for that.
Also from my understanding, even done right, it's not quite as fast as the top runners doing old school SBLJ. Suigi's 1 star WR getting past door 30 is insanely quick. Although I believe he was going for a DDD skip at the time.
@Gychi 9 star would be kinda cool. I wouldn't bother banning SBLJ, just DDD skip. Some people may prefer 30 star door skip the old fashioned way, no reason to limit that.
I feel this won't be hugely popular.
DDD skip is still one of the hardest tricks in the game, evidenced by how few people have runs on the zero star board (218 on N64 at time of writing)
Collecting 8 stars prior to one of the most reset heavy points in any category would be torture.
But hey, I might be wrong, people might find it fun.
On any category you're interested in, click on the "Show rules" button to the top of the table, and then "Category rules". This will tell you exactly what you need to do to complete the run.
1 star -> Beat the game as fast as possible, DDD skip is banned.
DDD skip allows you to not grab Bowser' sub star and go straight to FireSea (letting you finish the game with zero stars), so it being banned means you must collect Bowser's sub star (meaning you'll have 1 star by the end); the rest is technically up to you; but without following what SimonX64 said, you'll never approach WR.
If you're interested in single star records, check Usamune projects single star boards.
Also, collecting toad and mips stars are... not very interesting. Plus Aquarium is about the most boring star in the game.
A category extension should (IMHO) have some level of interest to it, otherwise what's the incentive to run it?
I don't know what's so confusing, clearly there needs to be not quite as extreme light of present.... and more bugrunnings.
Also: What?
IHOP and Wingcap reds would likely be faster than CCM Slide and Penguin race. Which actually includes a reason for LBLJ, if you have trouble with IHOP, simply do LBLJ and do BOB after wingcap.
I'm not sure which way would wash out faster.
Yes that was my point, OP said to allow 30 star door skip using SBLJ in the original post, which doesn't make sense for a 16 star run.
My point about LBLJ was just, why ban it? If it's slower to use it then people wouldn't use it, banning it outright just seems like an odd choice.
@Olios_07 Forums here aren't hugely active. If you want to be heard by a greater audience try the Discord. Link to it is at the top of the page. Requirements I'm not too sure on, but again the Discord will be able to answer your questions better.
SBLJ is typically banned for most subcategories unless there's a reason not to. For a 16 star run of any kind wouldn't you still want it banned? What's the point of Mips in this run? That's kind of the whole reason 16 star runs exist.
Also, not sure why you'd want to ban LBLJ, just leave it there and people will choose whether or not to use it based on their own preference.
Mips clip was discovered relatively early on the the piece. 2004 by Dom Dunc according to Ukikipedia. By the time speedrunning Mario64 was really becoming a thing, that was already a known trick, making it the current any%; including 31 and 50 star by that time seems superfluous. So there was any% (16), as intended (70), and 100% (120)
16 star is still there (IIRC) because it's the easiest introduction to Mario64 speedrunning. No super hard tricks (I pulled off mips clip on my third go), and not too many stars to learn. Relatively low barrier to entry.
SBLJ is hard, DDD skip even harder. They're not going anywhere.
120 is faster in Japanese because of a few things, faster intro (no voice over), no box to break in JRB for pillar star, Eyerok (boss fight in SSL) talks forever in the US version; and I'm sure there's a couple of other things I'm missing.
US is faster for 70 star because text scroll is slightly quicker, and over 70 stars (none of which include the two mentioned in why 120 is faster on Japanese) it adds up.
The difference isn't much, just down to a second or so IIRC. I've talked to many runners who don't care enough about the difference to get the other version, but you'll find all top tier runners will always run on the faster version for their particular category.
With regards to 1 key, it's not the same. Carpetless is a precise trick with a short string of frame perfect inputs required, but doable with pause buffering and enough practice. For 1-key we're talking about countless (not really - the TASers counted I'm sure, I'm just not sure myself how many) consecutive frame perfect inputs, and navigating strings of PUs
Jake Paul may be able to beat an aged Mike Tyson, but he wouldn't stand a chance against Goku at his peak. To use a somewhat silly analogy.
Look sorry, I don't mean to blunt your enthusiasm. It's great that you want to see the game improved. But this question has been asked by so many well meaning people over the years without a real depth of understanding as to what they're actually asking.
There are already many people doing exactly as you suggest. The TAS community is constantly breaking the game in new and interesting ways, and some of those ways are even possible to do with a regular controller. If anyone will figure out another way to open that moat door it's them, or the incomparable pannenkoek2012.
I'd also recommend watching the 1-key TAS explained video on youtube, you'll get a good idea as to how improbably a task opening that door without first draining the moat really is.
You say that like the community hasn't been constantly looking for improvements for nearly 2 decades.
People have been asking this question since 0 star was figured out. Is there any way to make it shorter again? I'm not saying there absolutely is no way, but at this point unless something that currently zero people know about the game is discovered, it's not going to happen.
