Hi speedrunners,

I am trying figure out how to speedrun a game (Lotus:The Ultimate Challenge) in dosbox-staging (Livesplit+Autosplitter). I already have Autosplitter for dosbox 0.74-3 and works well.

The reason i am trying to speedrun dosbox-staging:

Dosbox 0.74-3 was written in 32 bit architecture and uses somehow too much cpu power. On the other hand dosbox-stagging is written in 64 architecture and is lightweight (using very small amount of cpu power) even it has more functionality.

Since both have different architecture, memory addressing is very different. But i have not gone more than this.

I am using Cheat Engine for looking and searching into memory address and am still learning.

I have specific game setup and it is different from yours.

You might try below two setups and see result:

  1. Through Steam

You need to have native Steam installation for your game (Outlast). You probably have Outlast in your Library. I have seen someone running windows executables inside Steam (other than games). You need to check how to do it. If it is possible, you can run Outlast and LiveSplit through Steam.

  1. Through Bottles/Wine:

I believe it is not possible to install Outlast outside of Steam. If it is possible, you need to install Outlast inside Bottles (or Wine). Than try to run Outlast through Bottles (or Wine) and then Livesplit.

I am also newbie to Linux and am using Linux Mint since end of April.

Thank you for the suggestion.

Ofcourse running native program for OS is always best choice. Question is if it works and how. It is a bit hard to setup in Linux.

I will try native DOSBox for Linux and OpenSpeedRun when i have free time in near future. To develop a Autosplitter, it is needed to read memory and finding correct memory address which is another capability. I have noticed that PINCE is a good option for reading and finding correct memory address of the game.

I will try and explain my experience.

I am not sure if it works on Bottles. I am not familiar with Bottles and have no idea. I use Wine to run Windows programs.

I am almost sure if you can install Wine and then Outlast, it could work. Wine installation is always a bit tricky and you need make good research for how. Maybe it is very easy in Fedora. I use Linux Mint 22.3 (Actually it is Ubuntu Distro). So, you're setup probably different.

I believe these need to be you're steps:

  1. Wine Installation on Fedora

  2. Outlast installation on Wine (You need to install it on Wine)

  3. Copy all LiveSplit files and setups under drive_c (/home/user/.wine/drive_c/LiveSplit/)

  4. Run outlast (wine "/home/user/.wine/drive_c/Program Files (x86)/Outlast/Outlast.exe" &)

  5. Run livesplit (wine "/home/user/.wine/drive_c/LiveSplit/LiveSplit.exe" &)

Note: user is your user name. Filenames and directories in above are as an example. You need to find your's.

Hint: Both game and Livesplit need to be in the same session. So, LiveSplit can read game memory. This is easy in Wine. This could be also your problem in Bottles. Bottles may seperate each program runs and it is not good for LiveSplit. Just an idea. Please check for yourself.

@happycamper_ :

If anyone does not need specific Autosplitter, can easily use Dosbox for Linux which is more stable and with less issues, as you mentioned.

The reason i am still using Dosbox for Windows in Linux is Autosplitter for Lotus: The Ultimate Challenge. Ofcourse this is a special case. Autosplitter is designed to read the address of Dosbox for Windows. That's why i need to run DOSBox in Windows. Memory address is completely different in native Dosbox for Linux. I tried but could not find correct adresses of native Dosbox for Linux. So, i decided to use same Autosplitter which is designed for Windows. (I am gratefull to Winterthunder for designing Autosplitter)

Dosbox config file need to be a bit different in Linux even you use Dosbox for Windows under Wine. But this is another topic.

Hi everyone,

I have moved recently (Spring 2026) from Windows to Linux (Linux Mint 22.3 Cinnamon).

It took me a while to figure out how to speedrun in Linux. (Especially DOSBOX/Lotus3 + LiveSplit)

I have accomplished to run LiveSplit correctly and have written a guide for it: Here

If you have questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

Have fun speedrunning on Linux!

I have recently (Spring 2026) moved from Windows to Linux. It took me a while to figure out how to speedrun Lotus3 on Linux. I have created a step-by-step guide for it: Here

This guide can be also used for other MSDOS games.

Speedrunning in Linux is considered same with Windows speedruns: MSDOSEMU

Note: There are still unsolved problem about non-english keys on non-english keyboards on this setup. Non-english keys on non-english keyboards is not recognized by DOSBox (running under Wine).

Hi,

As it is in the rules, it must be used v 1.07 of the game for MSDOS version. I digged out the internet and found many different versions. I have just noticed one thing that in mission 1 counter gets down from 1000 to 999. I think this is not correct version, as i see it from speedrun versions. My all downloads drop allways to 999 in first mission.

How can i find correct version for my speedrun?

Thank you.

Hello,

Is there a autosplitter script for the game? I want to use it with Livesplit.

I made first Amiga speedrun and submitted. MSDOS version and Amiga version seems same/similar in some track details, but they are totally different on speedrunning perspective. So, it was a good idea to seperate them.

By the way, for Amiga Championship runs we need to use IGT (Sum of each race IGT) same as Lotus III MSDOS version. For Amiga Arcade/Timed runs, we need to use RTA (Real Time), same as Lotus III Genesis version, since Livesplit&Autosplitter doesn't exist for Amiga.

Great. Now let's see if anyone speedruns the game on Amiga

It is assumed to have exact same speedrun category for Amiga and MSDOS version of Lotus III. Because track codes are the same and game looks mostly the same.

Until today (8th August 2023) only MSDOS and Genesis speedruns are exist and they are on seperate categories.

Since noone have speedrun Lotus III in Amiga until today, it is not possible to say that they both (Amiga and MSDOS) will share the same speedrun category.

This only can be clear out after someone speedruns the game in Amiga and submits.
