I am looking to update the GB Emulator autosplitter to also support MC2, however this is proving quite tricky as the memory addresses don't follow the same patterns as the original. If anyone finds any sources that have cracked the memory locations, please share and I'll work it into the autosplitter.
Slowly working towards an All Collectibles category proposal, so tackled All Weapons on the way. This was my second run - I never finished the first run, but oddly I received the associated achievement With All Guns Blazing after collecting the Scorpion, which means I was still missing the Fork and the M63. Played on New Game + as there's no meaningful weapon carry-overs from previous runs.
I see this category being mostly similar to All Camos - neither have a presence on the results screen, so it is something that has to be tracked manually, and whilst there are achievements associated with them, the categories deviate from them slightly (I mean in the case of All Weapons, I have no idea what the achievement is actually expecting considering how I got it).
Requires collecting all weapons available during normal gameplay, so anything you start with or acquire automatically isn't included in this list. For me, any item equipped in the R2 weapon menu (excluding food items) should be included, hence Book, Mousetrap etc are included:
- XM16E1
- AK-47
- Scorpion
- M63
- Mosin Nagant
- M37
- RPG-7
- Grenade
- Smoke Grenade
- Chaff Grenade
- WP Grenade
- TNT
- Claymore
- Mousetrap
- Book
- Torch
- Fork
- Handkerchief
- Cigar Gas Spray
As stated, I'm planning on proposing an All Collectibles category, which will include the below. I'll make a separate thread for that once I've completed the run.
- All Weapons
- All Equipment (I'm not planning on a separate category for just this)
- All Kerotan Frogs
- All Plants & Animals
- All Camouflage
Not a mod, so take my post as just my take.
Normally, the way new categories are handled is if someone does the run and it seems legit, it can get added. So normally I'd recommend having a go at it and submitting it for proposal.
The issue I'd see with this proposal, is these three categories have no relationship at all. There's no common theme or challenge, they appear to just be three random categories from three random games. So I'd struggle to see where anyone else has the incentive to run this. What would you call this run?
Question becomes which ruleset gets applied to the combined category?
It's less they get combined, and more AB is just removed. Means any existing AB runs get absorbed into Any% as they're not legal for glitchless. Sucks for those runs, but it's a good reason this needs amending sooner rather than later.
BUT at the same time we should allow runners the ability to use boss camos provided they would have properly earned said camo during the course of the run
That is correct. That should go without saying, but the rules should make this clear for new runners. Thankfully weapons and such that would be unlocked globally are unlocked after completion, so shouldn't have to worry about using stuff too early.
buuuuuut if people wanna swap between styles I think the only time you'd wanna do that so far is for the fear right? and that is a glitch
If the rule ends up being style swap is only allowed for Any%, it won't matter, as the only use (I believe) it has is for The Fear, and you skip The Fear in Any% anyway! But if quick reloading is allowed in Any%, I see no reason to not also allow style switching.
- Also agree that AB and Glitchless should be combined.,
- I still think if it's gonna be NG/NG+, global unlocks should also be banned for NG, not just camos. Which means the naming convention should probably be different.
- CSG I have no strong feelings about. I'm never going to use it, and not using it doesn't affect PC LRT, so I don't feel having an opinion would be valid for me. With what's suggested about quick reloading, I don't mind the idea of CSG & QR being allowed in Any% but not Glitchless.
- Obviously I'm very much in favour of CE being started, I'm hopefully going to have a suitable AKAG run for submission soon. I would like to see difficulty separated at the very least, unlike in MGS3 where there's no separation. I'd also see the benefit of Any%/Glitchless being separate on CE too.
Following Steg's response, I do think there's enough sway either way where we need a solution to accomodate both allowing and restricting loading autosaves. If not done by IGT, loading an autosave will always be a timeloss, so the most optimal strats likely won't factor them in anyway. I am genuinely interested in both options for All Kero All Gako.
Yep, visual mods only.
Suave made a good point in the post about special items here: https://www.speedrun.com/posts/osdv8
His suggestion regards an Any% Unrestricted category where every item and other tools are allowed. I think this could be a solution to replace NG/NG+, where each category has a Restricted mode (NG, no unlockable items, no quick loading, no swapping controls) and an Unrestricted mode (NG+, all items (maybe still not specials, dunno), quick loading and swapping layouts allowed).
I think this works for all categories, not just Any%. I don't see separating NG and NG+ being worth it, but adding these to that separation makes it much clearer what the difference is supposed to be.
Completely agree with everything said here. Regarding the AT Camo, I just jumped into my first NG+ just to give the AT Camo a go to see how it works. Took moments to decide that yeah, this should be banned outside of CE. Will just trivialise stealth, it is just a worse version of stealth gear, but because it's not classed as a "special item" can be used for Foxhound runs, so that's its one big advantage. The fact that its unlocked pretty much the same way as other special items shows its significance and helps justify a ban. Annoyingly, you can't give it a light ban by splitting NG and NG+ because it's a global unlock (I really dislike the progression saving, wish it was all tied to save data).
-
Separate by difficulty No brainer
-
NG vs NG+ Unless there's something in NG+ that makes the run completely different, I don't see a need to separate; we didn't in the original. As has been said, most rewards being on your account as opposed to on a save file makes this difficult to manage, so would be easier on runners to not have this as a concern. Plus, if we're already considering 3 main categories, plus PC and Console split (I'm assuming?), then adding two more category modifiers is gonna make he boards pretty heavy.
-
Any%/All Bosses/Glitchless Agreed - I don't know enough yet about glitches to know the difference between All Bosses and Glitchless, but if there is a big difference, I'm all for having all three categories.
-
Should patches be a variable? Advising which patch you're on is probably wise, could be useful info to have in the future when stuff gets patched in or out.
-
DLC Camo CE only

Timing method RTA/LRT makes the most sense to me. I do believe there's a new tool for detecting loading screens on consoles too now, but I don't know how much different console loading times are as to whether it'd be useful. Whatever happens with timing though, I'd prefer to see it consistent across all versions, particularly start and end times. Was never a fan of Xenia runs ending earlier than every other run - cause inconsistencies for Multiple Metal Gear runs down the line.
-
Do we want to require showing score screen for PC? Yep, keeps it consistent and praise the powers that be for credit skipping. You had one job Konami, and you did it, thank you.
-
Allow/disallow quick area reloading Multi-segment only, I feel quick reloading isn't really in the spirit of the game and just acts as a mistake saver. If quick reload does get allowed, I would be advocating even harder for RTA/LRT, though banning seems to be the consensus anyway. Worth noting that quick area reloading would be a big advantage for Kero/Gako (AKAG) runs, as collection is globally saved the moment you shoot them - i.e. their collection status persists after quick reloading, dying, etc. So for some of the side rooms (Ponizovje West, Svyatogrnyj West) you could run in, shoot both, quick reload and be back at the entrance. That also returns any ammo you used on them. I'd much rather route in a death or fake death pill reload, or route in the backtrack for 0 continues, than quick area reload and have it for free.
-
Separate Legacy and New Style? or allow switching during runs? No strong feelings either way, though the fact that switching essentially acts as a quick reload and I'm against them, separating them and not allowing to switch does make more sense to me. EDIT: If as others have suggested there aren't that many differences between the two strats wise, not separating them on the boards but still not being allowed to switch would be acceptable to me.
-
Grenade camo was mentioned as a concern by folks Allowed, it's unlocked like many other camos that are allowed, and was never banned in the original.
-
The issues with this game's "New Game" option Annoyed that I'm essentially gonna have to run AKAG on a separate account and wipe before every run, but hey ho, them's the breaks. It's odd Konami decided to tie stuff into the account rather than saves - I do wonder whether there might be patches or mods down the line that opens up more of this stuff. But with how weird it is, I think it's the main reason I don't see much point in separating NG & NG+, its gonna be complicated. Runners are always welcome to apply their own restrictions to their runs.

Special Items CE only (excluding EZ Gun in VE). Keep it consistent with MGS3.
I am very much in favour of this change. Would definitely like to be able to see Very Easy and Euro Extreme separated.
I can't see anywhere we've said anything is happening in March. Most deadlines are in May and the event is in June.
That probably would have been wise to mention. The marathon is 100% online, though we do have ambitions to hold live events in the future!
I think it's just the way it's worded, with it being lumped in with the other items that do fit that criteria.
What it's meant to mean is that the croc cap isn't a required pickup, as it's not a camo or face paint but an item.
Hi Hamatet. Sounds like you're doing everything correctly. Just to confirm a couple of things though?
- Are you playing the PC or Console version of UnMetal?
- Have you set up LiveSplit to be using Gametime and not Realtime?
What might be helpful is if you could send some screenshot of what you're seeing, as it's not overly clear what the cause might be. Are you on the MGSR Discord, as this might be an easier place to help you?
Hi folks, I'm NickRPGreen, a reasonable newcomer to SpeedRunning, though have been trying over the last couple of years after being inspired every year by GamesDoneQuick.
This weekend, I am running a 24 hour charity livestream on twitch.tv/nickrpgreen to help raise funds for my girlfriend Adele Butler's teaching fellowship in Uganda this summer. She'll be going with the charity LRTT, which provides training and assistance to teachers in less fortunate characters to help improve the education for their young people. It's a fantastic cause and though JustGiving, we've been trying to raise £2,500 to cover the fellowship and travel costs.
Starting at 12pm BST (7am ET/6am CT), I'll be playing a number of different games for 24 hours, including MOBAs, party games and not one, but two speed runs. A rough timetable can be found in the link below, I'll be starting the stream with run of Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey for the SEGA Genesis (15th best on SpeedRun.com) and later on Sunday morning, I'll be running Klonoa 2: Lunatea's Veil for the PS2.
I'll be giving away game keys, doing shout outs and offering viewers the opportunity to join in with games, though none of these will be donation driven. The only donation incentive I'm running is in the run up to the stream, there is a bidding war to change my League of Legends Summoner name! The name with the most money donated will become my new name at the start of the stream on Saturday. There are a couple of rules, more info can be found on the event page.
It's a really great cause and I'm really looking forward to running this. Even if you can't donate, the support on twitch would be most appreciated.
