Hey! Thanks for pointing this out, there has been some exciting discussion on the Discord about using this and so we've made the following change:

For Any% runs, there is now a "Blueprints" option that lets you select between Normal and Glitched. We added a third option, "Blueprint Rewind," that explicitly allows this behavior, so that it's easy to tell how the runner is using blueprints during gameplay. This felt like an appropriate middle ground, since the behavior you described can seem like an exploit to some, but is not extremely impactful compared to other glitches and exploits

mod note: re-timed to 22.90 based on the doggo tooltip. Nice job!

That sounds like a fun challenge/meme run, but doesn't satisfy what we'd need for it to be a speedrun category. Most importantly, someone would have to actually do it :) beyond that, however:

Like I mentioned before (and you can see by the choices you had to make), what exactly constitutes 100%, in a game that doesn't measure progression like that, is difficult. You very quickly would (and did) find yourself in the trap of "is this too insane to be part of it? Or is it just insane enough?"

We encounter similar conundrums when doing Low% runs, and for that reason those runs are coordinated mostly on discord, rather than managed here as official speedrun categories, and in some ways it's better for that. The run can be done according to the opinions of those participating, and don't enforce one person's take on "the spirit of the game" over another's.

I'd imagine a 100% to be more around unlocking everything, since as soon we breach "doing everything" as a concept it brings along a lot of gray area (collect all plant matter? tap every node? etc). Some tasks like collecting every power slug are akin to "reach level 100" in an RPG, which isn't really 100% material. From other conversations in the Discord I think the loose goals are as follows:

  • Unlock every milestone

  • Unlock every MAM research + alternate recipe (like you mentioned)

  • Finish the game (duh)

  • Purchase every upgrade/collectible in the AWESOME Shop

  • Find all boombox tapes

There might be something I'm forgetting, but that's generally the direction I'd want to see it go

What he means is that many people talk about adding longer-than-any% categories, but there's already a historically small amount of people who run any% in the first place. Often people ask for a category that they themselves wouldn't make a submission for, so we'd prefer someone actually do the run they suggest and then we can discuss making spots on the leaderboard for it :)

Tiwtch is very bad about preserving VODs, it may be gone for good :(

NMG and Glitched are separated by a filter right now so that you can see the top runs for both types. We do not have any plans to duplicate every category because when Update 8 comes out the 007 glitch will be fixed and runs will likely no longer warrant that kind of distinction until something else is discovered.

I also want to emphasize that this leaderboard should not be a 100% representation of what you can and cannot run. I do a lot of novelty runs that don't fit into any of these categories for fun, and if that's the goal then I encourage you to do the same. However, flooding a community of this size with leaderboards for them all would be overwhelming for new people and not add much.

Novelty runs are encouraged and fun, however the general rule of thumb has been not to add categories until people are actually doing them or we will wind up with a bunch of novelty categories with zero interest or participation. See discussion around adding HUB%: https://www.speedrun.com/satisfactory/thread/jl5aw

If you want to drum up interest, I recommend actually doing these runs and posting them in the speedrun discord to generate discussion :)

As for the categories themselves, some thoughts:

coke% This is just 2Package% + Build 2 refineries?

HardDrive% Can only be done when seasonal events are active due to the advent calendar being necessary

Container% Sounds kind of novel, but also pointless? Instead of buying parts for a milestone you're just buying them to fill up a box; 24 coupons would satisfy this run and we already get that many for all major categories.

Death% Escape > Respawn. 1 second menu traversal speedruns seem kind of pointless

Statue% Similar to the golden nut % that we've been talking about and that would be a more significant achievement :)

I do remember that conversation! Still hesitant to get into the pattern of making new novelty categories for every idea (I've done a bunch of speedruns that aren't listed as categories on this site), but if you post about it in the Discord (lots more active users there) you may be able to drum up some other interest or at least we can see the run you did and chat about making a category from there :)

Yep! Blueprints are allowed but you may not import them from other saves. Each blueprint must be made during the game

Yes, that's allowed as long as the timer continues. My update 5 WR involves having to reload due to an interaction bug, in fact:

I considered that, but wasn't sure if I should set that precedent yet

Timer says 11 seconds, but the doggo is tamed at 10 seconds and 24/30 frames in the VOD so I've verified it as 10

I feel like we have enough suggestions to make a whole "Pain" category at this point

A slug% we were playing around with the other day (pretty fun to route) was one blue, one yellow, one purple slug. Again, only worth making a category for once people are actually running it like Ariuna said :) but it's a novel concept

Thread: Satisfactory
United StatesEpiphane3 years ago

Yeah, that's where it becomes an issue :) I consider my coal "done" at 8 generators, but an energy-producing factory only needs 1. The goal highly depends on what the power is for, but in the event of a speedrun there is nothing past the ending time. I could hand-place 1 piece of coal into X generators and it would be complete once they all begin burning, or simply satisfy some other requirement on a technicality. Again, not to say this isn't worth using as a split or indication towards another run, but on its own there are a lot of extra stipulations you have to make that reduce the fun of the run.

Thread: Satisfactory
United StatesEpiphane3 years ago

It's a novel concept! But hard to define as a separate category. For example: what does "operational" mean? You can unlock Coal Power, build one generator and water extractor, and have a functioning plant without changing anything from the current Package% route. Defining a goal based on what a factory contains is pretty subjective and difficult to make a good rule set for.

That being said, I do "Coal%" informally to practice for 3 and 4 package runs, and it's a great (and fun) way to keep track of how well you can move into the steel phase of the game. But IMO it's not a good category on its own, because the end goal is too subjective.
