The categories have been separated. Thanks everyone for you input and for keeping it civil!

Well I was getting ready to separate the NTSC boards for the reasons I outlined in the original post. The main reason I'm in favor of separating is for the fact that the two games (NTSC and PAL) are so different and, secondly, because I think its best for the long-term popularity and accessibility of the speedrun.

The gotcha was that I dont have the permissions to make those changes to the board (I'm just a verifier). @ShiningDragoon Do you have any thoughts on these proposed changes? Would you be able to separate the Any% boards? Thanks!

I didn't know that you could filter the board a certain way and have it show the results as an ad hoc board. That's pretty rad.

I'm not sure that many people are aware of that feature or use it on a regular basis. For most folks, I think the default view results in your 'place on the leaderboard'.

Over the years we've discovered many differences in glitches, tricks and general gameplay between the NTSC and PAL versions of Rygar. Today the speedruns of the two different versions are vastly different. Because of these differences (and the recent PAL version competitiveness) I'm proposing we separate the current Any% board into two separate boards (Any% NTSC and Any% PAL).

I hope this isn't seen as an attempt to diminish WolfAeterni's accomplishment with Any% on the PAL version because that is not the intention but rather to make room for competition on PAL without invalidating the history of any% on NTSC.

Separating the boards could potentially increase activity on the Rygar boards which I see as a positive. It's possible that folks who already have an NTSC Any% time would be interested in the PAL Any% category as a separate run and vise versa.

I'm going to float this proposal for a few days and unless I see overwhelming opposition to this idea, I'll separate the boards. Thanks for listening and please share any feedback you might have.

Should be fixed now.

I've tried to fix this numerous times and it seems like its an issue with the site both caring about case sensitivity (to differentiate runners) and not caring about case sensitivity (I can't edit the old run's runner name because when I change it, it always reverts back. I should have opened a ticket about it awhile ago...I'll do that.

Looks like the life counter corrects itself after the next extra life threshold. You have 3 lives after the water snake death if you get the diamond glitch and avoid the stone head.

I've noticed that sometimes after you get the Raj Diamond, you don't actually get the extra life. You'll have 1 life left after elevator pit death (Just after the Diamond).

In the past, I've thought the diamond glitch was bad, but it turns out ducking under the 2nd stone head is about 3.2 seconds faster than taking a death there. So it turns out the diamond glitch saves time...quite a bit of time.

Does anyone have any kind of information regarding what causes the diamond glitch? I've noticed that it's been streaky for me in the past...I'll get it a few runs in a row sometimes, but I have no idea what causes it.

Maybe I'm missing something else that makes the diamond glitch bad? Let me know what you Super P freaks think.

I dont know enough about the PAL differences to weigh in but I trust Dragoon and Peco's judgement :)

Sounds like removing milliseconds is the easiest solution to me. Since this game isn't super competitive, I think that this is a fine solution.

Thanks for digging in to this! I'm not quite sure what to do about this. My gut reaction is that the runs should be invalidated. Moderating runs with dropped frames in a speedrun that results in a smaller framecount is not tenable. I'd like to hear your opinion Joe :)

I don't think the airwalking is intended by the developers (not that this is the only criterion for what constitutes a glitch) so I would tend to put it in the 'glitch' category.

I wouldn't be opposed to what professor has suggested. However, I probably wouldn't run for a faster OOB time in this case. I'm really happy with the execution on my current Any% run and I wouldn't want to replace that with a more poorly executed run (most likely given the difficulty of the oob trick). I understand that this is a selfish motivation so I will completely understand if merging the boards is the consensus.

I think the reason for the different categories is how much the given category requirements change the route and feel of the run. I'm not trying to speak for Dragondarch, but I'm guessing at their logic...

The new any% is quite a different run due to the precision and difficulty of the big OOB trick that saves a ton of time. It's conceivable that someone (who loves the core gameplay of Goonies II) might be turned off by the OOB trick because of it's high execution requirement later in the run. If it wasn't in its own category, fewer runners might be attracted to the run. If I were a new runner, having to complete the OOB glitch to have a competitive time would be a turn-off.

Having said that, there are already few runners of the game so maybe the previous point isn't so important. Further, maybe popularity/accessibility of the speedrun isn't something we SHOULD take in to account for category creation as it might compromise the essence of what speedrunning is all about. I don't necessarily agree with ignoring popularity, accessibility and fun, but it's worth considering. Also, splitting out the category does somewhat diminish the accomplishments of the runners who do complete the OOB trick as they are no longer running on the 'main' board.

In the end, I don't know what the right answer is and I can see both sides of the argument. I'm glad I'm not making the decisions :P

I like it. Making damageless the only requirement made for an interesting route which is a good reason to add it as a category imo.

Limiting myself to 2-3 hours of playing per day has worked for me. I usually only play 2 or 3 days per week. Breaks are good!
