I recently got around to getting the Linux build of the game working on modern Linux via a recreation of one of the bundled libraries - https://github.com/IoIxD/TuxRacer1_1_ModernLinux
Since the rules state that "only modified" versions of the game are allowed, though, I want to make sure that this would be allowed? It doesn't technically modify the game, let alone in a way that would make cheating possible, but rather it replaces the library for handling window creation and such, so that it can work with modern Mesa drivers (afaik this isn't needed on Nvidia). The code for doing all this is open and can be audited.
(also, yes, the game could run under Wine, but that's never an ideal solution and in this case the Windows version of the game seems to randomly crash after a race ends if the version of Windows is too new).
I don't believe there's any actual requirement to use the modified version of the game, from what I can read in the rules it's only advised
In any case, you wrote that rule so it's up to you how you enforce it for v1.1 :)
Ah, I must've forgotten. In that case I'll change it ig.
...that said, it turns out I overengineered a solution when all I had to do was delete another one of the library files, didnt realize that zlib was packaged. I might take this opprtutunity to do any other useful mods though, maybe I can find out how to hook into the game and allow me to create a ghost mod.
Runs of the commercial, closed source "1.1" version of the game are now allowed.
This version of the game has entirely different levels and should honestly have its own leaderboard, but the speedrun.com moderators told me to contact the moderator of this board to get clearance on whether the 1.1
