It would be cool if there were more categories. The following categories could be added:
100% – Start the game from the beginning, with nothing unlocked (new game save file), and reach 100% completion. You’d need to get gold in all stages. The timer stops when the player reaches 827 points, which is the total for 100%
100% NG+ – Now with all skaters and boards unlocked, the goal is to reach 100%, or 827 points; same as the '100%' category, but with everything unlocked
Any% w/cheats – The regular Any% category, but now cheats are allowed. I think cheats to unlock boards, characters, and stages shouldn’t be allowed. The player would have to record themselves entering the cheats in the options menu and list which ones were used in the description of the video
Any% NG+ w/cheats – The NG+ category, but with cheats allowed. Same rules as 'Any% w/cheats', but now with access to all characters and boards. All stages unlock cheat would still be prohibited
100% w/cheats – Reach 100% completion using cheats (new game save file). As explained, cheats to unlock boards, characters, and stages wouldn’t be allowed
100% NG+ w/cheats – Same as the other 100% categories, but with everything unlocked and cheats allowed
And you could also add one more category for each of the ones I mentioned: 100%; 100% NG+; Any%; Any% NG+
In which the player would have to use the game's default skateboard (Basic). You’d have to play, following the rules of the selected category, using only the default skateboard; except for the ones with cheats, because there’s a cheat that gives any character maxed-out stats
I’d play all of them
Thanks for the thoughts on new categories, some of these would be interesting, I have no idea how a 100% run would work, I forget if there is a gap list in this game, but that could definitely be added if you present a run of it. I don't want to add any more categories to these boards without at least a run with a video submitted. This is how we normally do things in the thps speedrun community.
In regards to the cheats based categories, there is a cheat% category in the category extensions which I did 1 run of on wii and it was so slow I never submitted it lol. THPS - Category Extensions - Speedrun.com but if you have any videos with some runs of any of these cheat% categories they would most likely be added to the category extension board.
Thanks for the reply. I’m going to work on doing runs in the categories I mentioned, with a video as proof; but should I post it here in this thread or somewhere else? Really cool. I didn’t know about this extensions section.
And also, would it be possible to have a cheat% category using the game's default skateboard (Basic), but with the Perfect Stats – IAmBob cheat being banned
I’ve been practicing certain categories — basic board 100% — and I came to a conclusion: it’s neither simple nor dynamic enough to make it into a proper speedrun. I also realized that doing NG+ with cheats would basically be the same as not using cheats at all. So, the categories I had in mind — 100% basic board and NG+ basic board — don’t really need to be added.
That said, I thought of three other categories:
-
Tutorial: The timer starts as soon as you press to begin the tutorial and ends when you complete all the tutorial objectives — or rather, after clearing “Chapter 8: Combat” — and a message saying “Tutorial Complete!” appears at the top of the screen.

-
Versus Tony: The timer starts when you select a character in Downhill Challenge, same as in an Any% run, and ends when you cross the finish line in any Tony’s Challenge event. This event appears when using certain characters — like Kevin, MacKenzie, Crash, and Armondo. In this run, you have to play through the game, in a new save file, until you unlock one of these characters, then replay the stage where they’re unlocked, entering Tony’s Challenge. If you use Kevin, the event will be called “Kevin’s Challenge”, but in the stage you’ll actually be facing Tony.
-

-
All Skateboards: The timer starts the same way as in an Any% run and ends once you collect the last skateboard (it can be the Dragon). There’s no big trick — you just need to collect all skateboards in a new save file. One extra detail: in the PS2 version there are 3 additional skateboards — Dragon T, Vulture, and Vanguard (the last 3).

I had also thought of an “All Characters” category, but in a normal Any% run it’s already possible to unlock everyone, so it would just be redundant.
Wanted to throw in my two cents into this, but want to hear your thoughts @Kayylonnn

Could easily add 100% to the board, both for NG and NG+. Don't see an issue with that. Versus Tony and All Skateboards I don't see an issue with either, so I can add those.
-
Could add tutorial as a level instead of a category?
-
Usually for stuff related to - for lack of a better word - challenges, we tend to push them to the Category Extensions board. In this case: Basic Board, Cheat% of any kind, and anything else I missed that are like that could be added easily over there. The only requirement we have for CE is to think of a category that hasn't been done before and provide a video, and we don't really question it lol
Everything you said is a good idea, and I was actually thinking the same thing. But “Tutorial” could also be added to the Category Extensions, since I saw that other games have that category there as well.
I’ll list, based on the videos I submitted, how it could be organized:
On the leaderboard:
- 100%
- 100% NG+
- All Skateboards
- Versus Tony
Category Extensions:
- All cheats (cheat% and cheat 100%)
- All basic skate (basic skate any% and basic skate ng+) ~ maybe I’ll try 100% later, but it’s so difficult
- Tutorial
And all of this is for the PS2 version, but the Wii version is almost the same, so it could be added there as well — not on GBA or DS. But I can't play the Wii version without a motion controller to provide videos. A few details missing in the Wii version compared to the PS2 version: fewer stages (like Hot Lava and Boost Jam), 3 fewer skateboards, and 3 fewer characters. Other than that, the game is almost identical, apart from a few new features.
Platform is a full-game wide category on this board, so I will keep it (alternative would just look messy). I've gone ahead and added all of the categories you requested. If you want, I can add the platform-specific variable to the CE boards (unless you think it is fine for now).
Also, if the rules are messed up, feel free to post what the correct ones should be!
