SoF2 Speedrun Guide

# Setting Up

I recommend you install **Sui's Fix**. It fixes the HUD elements on modern resolutions and allows wider FOV. It's located in the **Resources** page and there is a text file on how to install it once you download it.

*(I play on 1920x1080 and FOV 100)*

I also recommend you **disable view bobbing** through the console since it helps with aiming and it is not flagged as a cheat command.

*(See "Console Commands" at the bottom)*

In the options menu, under Misc, use these settings:

**Always run: On**

**Always jump crouch: On**

Upon starting a new game, select **custom difficulty** with the following settings.

- **Difficulty: Amateur**
- **Carrying Capacity: Unlimited**
- **Saves: Unlimited**
- **Weapon Inaccuracy: Off**

# Controls & Binds

Other than the usual first person shooter controls, this game has "weapon special" controls in the menu. These are needed to use the OICW to beat the final boss quickly. **[VIDEO](https://youtu.be/QtJDyRtsfAI)**

*Weapon Special #1 = Zoom Out*

*Weapon Special #2 = Zoom In*

*Weapon Special #3 = Move down in menu*

*Weapon Special #4 = Select*

**FPS changing binds** are also used for various purposes and I will describe those under "**Softlocks, Bugs & Quirks**"

*I use F1, F2, F3 & F4 for 30, 90, 125 & 250 FPS respectively.*

*(more in "**Console Commands**")*

# Mechanics

**SoF2's movement** primarily consists of **repeated strafe jumping**. Strafe jumping works the same as in Quake 3, but you aren't able to chain your jumps into bunny hop sequences.

**Prone dropping** is done by dropping off a ledge during the prone animation and then **standing up mid-air**. This drags you down really fast and **cancels fall damage**. **[VIDEO](https://youtu.be/GD-0rjTXVxk)**

**Fast weapon switching** is done by **Hiding Current Item** and then selecting the gun you want because selecting hide current item cancels weapon animations. **[VIDEO](https://youtu.be/cz95WBsDZfI)**

(*I use ALT to Hide Current Item for convenience. The default key is 0. )*

**Pause warping** is used to lag through various triggers. It basically makes you **teleport over short distances**. **[VIDEO](https://youtu.be/GGP2xjDFtSE)**

*This is most importantly used to skip the OICW tutorial and to perform the fire skip in the first Shop level at the end of the game.*

*(Make sure to have "Pause Game" bound to something convenient that doesn't obstruct your movement. I use T.)*

**Quicksaving** the game also **cancels fall damage**. *This is used to perform the Cave Complex skip in Kamchatka.*

# Softlocks, Bugs & Quirks

SoF2 is best played on its **default FPS value of 90,** because you can get stuck on stairs and small geometry like curbs if you play on higher FPS.

**30 FPS** is used for **jumping higher** without having to clear any distance, enabling you to jump onto NPC's heads while standing very close to them. **[VIDEO](https://youtu.be/m048w_pByv4)**

*This is used in Train Station to jump off Dr. Ivanovich's head onto the train.*

**30 FPS** is also used to **prevent the game from softlocking** when skipping cutscenes that end some levels. **[VIDEO](https://youtu.be/TQb7u-FqGkI)**

*The most notable examples are the end of Bunker (Vergara's Mansion) and Lab 4 (Kamchatka).*

**Prone Movement speed is affected by FPS**. On **30 FPS it is the fastest** and its speed declines on higher FPS.

Using **250 FPS** will make for **quicker cutscene skips**, **faster conveyor belt rides** and most importantly, it makes the **Rebel Encampment skip** possible by allowing you to get stuck in a line between 2 polygons. **[VIDEO1](https://youtu.be/yRemY02y_T0), [VIDEO2](https://youtu.be/ezOauVFZtAc)**

Enemies will see you and **shoot through the grass** in Columbia and **through the curtains** in the Hospital levels.

## Save Warping

Save warping is done by **quicksaving** the game **during the first part of a level's loading screen** and then **loading that quicksave**. This **relocates your spawn position** in that level, which is useful in a handful of levels.

*In practice, I usually quicksave about 3 times before i see the bullets start filling the loading bar in a loading screen and then I just load one of those quicksaves from the menu.*

Some save warps spawn you **partially inside walls or inside the ground**.

*In some cases, like in Interior (Seaward Star), you spawn inside of a wall and you can then combine strafing, prone and pause warping to eventually get out of the wall.*

*In other cases, like in Grounds (Vergara's Mansion), you spawn in the ground and can't get out. For such cases, ending the previous level while you are crouching actually makes you spawn higher, thus enabling you to get unstuck from the ground by pressing crouch.*

# Useful Console Commands

**To open the console, press Shift and Tilde.**

You can autocomplete partially written commands by pressing Tab.

To scroll through the console and navigate quickly, use Page Up, Page Down, Home & End.

### **Commands**

**clear** *(clears the history of the console)*

**cg_drawfps 1** *(shows your FPS in the top right corner)*

**com_maxfps 30** *(changes the FPS to a desired value, 30 in this example)*

**bind F1 com_maxfps 30** (when you press F1, FPS limits to 30)*

**cg_bobpitch 0** *(disables view bobbing up and down. default = 0.002)*

**cg_bobroll 0** *(disables view bobbing side to side in a rolling motion. default = 0.002)*

**cg_bobup 0** *(disables view bobbing up, default = 0.005)*

**r_picmip 0** *(changes the texture quality. 0 = best quality. bigger numbers = worse quality. i usually play at 4, 5 or 6)*

**r_mode -1** *(changes the resolution. -1 means use custom resolution and then 0, 1, 2, 3 etc. are assigned certain resolutions. i use -1.)*

**r_customWidth 1920** *(sets the desired width of the custom resolution, 1920 in this example)*

**r_customHeight 1080** *(sets the desired height of the custom resolution, 1080 in this example)*

**vid_restart** *(restarts video and applies the changes you made)*
