# Clarification

Consoles:

- PS2 = PlayStation 2
- BC PS3 = Backwards-compatible PlayStation 3, the first few models of PS3 which have the ability to play PS1 and PS2 games
- PS3 = PlayStation 3 HD Remaster, digital download or Collection disc
- PS Vita = PlayStation Vita Remaster, digital download or Collection cartridge
- PS Now = PlayStation Plus Premium (formerly known as PlayStation Now) streaming The Sly Trilogy or The Sly Collection on PC, PS4 or PS5.
- PS4 / PS5 = 2024 PS2 Classics release

Regions:

- NTSC-U = North American version (Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus)
- PAL = European version (Sly Raccoon)
- NTSC-J = Japanese version (Kaitou Sly Cooper / 怪盗スライ・クーパー)

## Recommendations (Original, console):

- It is generally recommended to play on PS5, or start off on PS2 or PS4. 
- The PS4 and PS5 versions of the game are bundled with all four versions of the game, meaning the NTSC version is accessible to all, and is even free with PS Plus Extra. 
- **Do not feel the need to buy a BC PS3 when starting out**. While BC PS3 is the fastest method of play, they are infamously unreliable and expensive, and generally not recommended **especially** if you are just starting out. BC PS3 only saves ~15-20 seconds compared to PS5 in Any%.

## Recommendations (Remaster, console):

- Since every remaster version functions exactly the same, there isn't a lot to talk about here. If you have the option, **NTSC is optimal.**
- Hard drive makes a significant difference in loading times. Equipping your PS3 with an SSD is faster than the stock HDD your PS3 comes with.
- Avoid discs. PS3 discs are painfully slow, and especially avoid PS Now (PS Plus Streaming). 
- PS Vita, though it has decently fast resets and every trick works the same, has very slow loads and cannot reset to skip intro cinematics.
- Ignore the NTSC-J, and NTSC-J (KOR) PS2 versions. They aren't really relevant here. 

> (26/03/2025) At this point forward, this is from the older version of this guide. The majority of this is still correct and relevant, but it may be a big of a hodge-podge of information and overexplaining :^)

# PAL versus NTSC-U on PS2 (Original)

PAL and NTSC-U (plus NTSC-J) Original versions work a little bit differently from each other. It is much easier to play on the NTSC-U version, though the PAL version is also a viable version to play on. Proxies are harder on PAL, for whatever reason. It's believed to have something to do with the game's lower framerate. To counteract this, most proxies on NTSC-U are doable on PAL with the same results, simply by pausing the game. Pausing the game causes the game to slow down, which affects clock speed. When clock speed is changed from its normal value of 1, the game's physics react differently.

Model numbers of a PS2 are also important to take note of. The fastest PS2 is an SCPH-90xxx (just known as the "90k" model), which is a slim model. The smaller the number, the slower it is. Despite this, the fastest PS2 couldn't reset on Mz Ruby's intro, something that the BC PS3 can. It's probably worth noting that there was a Sony Bravia TV that had a built-in PAL PS2, but it hasn't been tested for speed. (Allegedly it has the internals of a 90k PS2.)

# Remaster (Load Patch)

Remaster is slower primarily due to the Load Patch and not being able to set up Cinematic Skips.

Japan only ever got a disc release for the remaster, so while it is faster as a language, it is slower by default compared to the Korean version as running on disc is much much slower than running on a downloaded version of the game.

NTSC-U is faster than PAL due to Health and Safety skip, where setting the PS3 to a certain language will skip the warning at every reset. NTSC-J (KOR) is slightly slower than PAL due to language differences.

# Asian PS2 releases (Load Patch on PS2)

Both NTSC-J releases work the same as NTSC-U, the only difference is that it has the same Load Patch as the remaster does, meaning that you cannot set up Cinematic Skips. Japanese is faster as a language than Korean.

# PS Vita and PS Now (Load Patch, Reset "Patch")

PS Vita and PS Now work exactly the same as Remaster, but they cannot skip the animated cutscenes through resets. PS Vita has a faster reset than PS Now for boss intro cutscenes and doesn't have to wait for the autosave to get out of menu locking, making it faster compared to PS Now.

Hopefully this guide helps out people looking to get into the category but, are intimidated by the strats and routes that I use.

Quick note the average coin amounts gathered from each MTS in hub 2 provided you don't die are as follows
Straight to the top: 4-6
Back Alley Heist: 30~

5.2 100% Beginners Guide (PS3/Remaster)

Since PSN is a fantastic version, there isn't that many changes. So most of the route is the exact same BCPS3/PS2 uses. If its not specified what you need to do, follow the BCPS3/PS2 route.

A splitset for this route can be found in the resource section with and without subsplits. 

Here are the route changes and differences you need to know/learn to run 100% on PSN.

#General Differences

• You can't load to skip cutscenes on the PSN version. For the longer cutscenes we can exit to hideout to skip them. This does not work for intro or boss cutscenes.
• You can't load then get the key. You will end up without the key and all of the progress you have done since the last autosave will be lost.
• When you open the menu while the game is autosaving (% showing) you have to wait until the game is done autosaving before you can do anything like exit level or view map. Be aware that you can still press start and x, so be careful not to unpause the game.
• If the menu is open you cannot press select to enter the map, you need to press the view map button instead.
• Proxies does not work at all, so all proxies are routed around. 

#Hub 1 - Tide of Terror

**A Stealthy Approach**
You can't do the sign proxy, so you will have to run into the cutscene, wait for the cutscene to start then pause and exit to hideout. Then re-enter A Stealthy Approach.

**Major Routing Change**
You can't skip the cutscene infront of the barrel in A Cunning Disguise by loading so we are gonna skip it with style.

Here are the route you want to follow:
1. Enter the cutscene in A Cunning Disguise and when the cutscene starts playing you want to view map to the center of the hub. 
2. Go left to Into the Machine, get the key and vault like normal and exit the level.
3. Go to High Class Heist and get the key and vault like normal, but when you open the vault you want to view map to A Cunning Disguise.
4. In A Cunning Disguise you need to get the key and the vault. 
• First you want to get the key. Use the "old strats" to get to the key area. When you are at the key area you want to collect the three bottles to the right and get the key. Do the pause strat when you hit the key frame then load the game.
• Now get all of the bottles, open the vault, exit the level, jump down and open the generator.
5. Go to Gunboat Graveyard using pipe jump, collect all the bottles, open the vault and exit the level.
6. Go to the cannon and do the super jump chain and defeat Sir Raleigh. When you get the pause/final hit on him you want to view map to The Hideout

#Hub 2 - Sunset Snake Eyes

-On A Rocky Start you view map to the center of the hub. When the bridge cutscene starts you want to exit to hideout. Then re-enter the center of the hub.

-Don't do Boneyard Casino MTS, delay that to the split "World 2 100%"

**Muggshot's Turf**
You can't do the Muggshot Proxy, so you need to use the keys to unlock the car and ram it into the enterence. You can use the car catapult to get up on the roof. If you have 44 coins or less leaving Boneyard Casino, you can do the car catapult and do Straight to the Top first. Otherwise do Two to Tango after entering part two of the hub.

**Two to Tango**
You can't do "Date Skip" to skip the cutscene. Since we don't have any way to avoid it, we have to watch the cutscene.

**Straight to the Top**
You can't do the box proxy so you will have to focus a bit on coins. Don't have more then 44 coins entering the level. 

When you get to the vault you want to open it and load the game. 
Then do the super jump strat to get the key. Before getting the key you want to have around 98-99 coins so you can get a charm in the MTS.
If you have enough coins you load the game and do the MTS with the super jump strat.

If you don't have a charm entering the level you can get one on the far right in the second part of the level after you crash down with the tower.

**Muggshot**
Before entering this level you need a charm, you will get one or more in Two to Tango, but worse case scenario get one in Back Alley Heist.

The most optimal way to finish Muggshot is to pause when you get the % after hitting the final mirror. Then view map to Two to Tango MTS. Even if you don't go for the pause strat you want to run off the ledge as you're hitting the final mirror. This will avoid starting the cutscene and you will spawn in the beginning of the level. Though, if you have a charm you can't run off the ledge and still skip the cutscene. In this case, get rid of the charm in the first or second phase of the fight.

**Treasure in the Depths (KEY)**
When you enter this level you want to press exit level when sly touches the ocean floor and the cutscene starts, then walk back in the level. This will skip the cutscene.

**When doing the World 1 100% split**
World 1 100%
-A Stealthy Approach MTS (Down)
-The Fire Down Below MTS (Right)
-High Class Heist MTS (Up)
-Into the Machine MTS (Left)
-A Cunning Disguise MTS (Left -> Left)
-The Gunboat Graveyard Key -> Load -> MTS (Left -> Left -> Left)

#Hub 3 - Vicious Voodoo

**Dread Swamp Path**
After you have gotten the key with 19 bottles and left the level you want to instantly turn back and walk into the level. On PSN you don't initiate the cutscene upon leaving the level, so we can walk back in, open the vault and do the MTS without losing much time. So when you open the vault you load the game and do the MTS. When you leave the level after the MTS you load and continue the route like normal.

#Hub 4 - Fire in the Sky

**The Unseen Foe**
When you get the pause on the key frame and the % pops up, you want to view map to the center of the hub. If you get the "god pause" where you pause before you hit the key frame and theres no % you want to exit level.

Do the MTS after Panda King.

**Flaming Temple of Flame**
When you get the 10th bottle you can do a few different strats that save time compared to going back up the intended route. This is how much time they take to do:

-Getting the bottle and then take damage with a charm :			~12 seconds
-Getting the bottles and then dying (Need atleast two lifes): 		~18 seconds
-Getting the bottles and walking back using the intended route:		~27 seconds

**Rapid Fire Assault**
You can't do the "spinning proxy" on PSN so you will have to do the level the intended way.

In the end of the level you can hardlock the console. To drastically decrease the chance of hardlocking you want to kill all the snowball monkeys in the final part of the level and then shoot the key tower from the left side.

**Panda King**
When you get the pause/final hit on Panda King you want to view map to The Unseen Foe and do the MTS. Beware that the proxy does not work here so you will have to do the old strats (jumping over the gap to the guard booth).

#Hub 5 - The Cold Heart of Hate

**A Daring Rescue**
To skip the cutscene you want to view map to either Burning Rubber (Left on DPad) or A Hazardous Path (Down on DPad) when the cutscene starts. Then go back into the level by pressing select. Using the exit to hideout button will start a dialog with Bentley in the hideout.

Guide for Any% on Remaster

# General rule of thumb about what works on Remaster

The main things that are different on PSN include:

- Proxies
- Load deficiencies
- Stuck Spots (either slightly harder or outright don't work)
- Waiting for the autosave in menu movement
- The game runs 1.7% faster than PS2 Disc

# Fastest setup for Remaster

The fastest Remaster version is a Fat model PS3 running an NTSC-U Download (Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus) on an SSD. Specifics of models are as follows, any PS3 with the model of CECH-Axx through CECH-Kxx (the number at the end does not matter as it is just a region code, and only matters for BC PS3s). The reason we run NTSC-U specifically is due to a Health and Safety skip. By setting your system language to Dutch, German, Italian, Japanese or Korean, you can skip the health and safety warning that pops up everytime you reset, saving you about 7 seconds per reset. Running on an SSD is faster than running on the standard HDD that comes with the PS3, and running on disc is very slow and is not recommended.

## PSN region breakdown:

NTSC-U (USA) > PAL > NTSC-J (JPN) >  NTSC-J (KOR)

## (Simplified) PS3 model breakdown:

Fat > Slim > Super Slim

## PS3 hard drive breakdown:

SSD > HDD included with PS3 > Collection Disc

*It's worth noting that there are language differencials, of which certain PSN versions can benefit from. If you plan to run Any% on PAL Remaster or on the PS Vita, Spanish is faster than English by about 0.5 seconds. While you can switch to French or Spanish on NTSC Remaster, you will lose the benefit of H&S Skip. For whatever reason, the PAL PS2 dubs have an insanely slow Clockwerk voice, but this was fixed on PS3.*

# File Setup and Cutscene Skips

To set up your file, you have to simply watch the Paris introduction cutscene ("Sly, come in! Sly!!!") and save your game, as the Cinematic Skip file setup does not work on Remaster (and the Load Patch PS2 releases). Now, you have a run file set up, and now you can start running (provided that you follow the file regulation of 0 coins, 5 lives). In order to skip the cinematics, you have to reset your game over them, by holding down the PS Button, going to Quit Game, and selecting Yes to reset game.

Resetting the game on PS Vita will not skip the cinematics.

# Paris and A Stealthy Approach (with Void Drown)

When you start the run, you immediately have to die four times in Paris, to make the game give you a pity charm. Using this pity charm, you can perform the ASA Void Drown to skip all of ASA and go straight to the end. The Paris mattress proxy does not work.

# A Stealthy Approach (without Void Drown)

When you enter ASA, you cannot use the Sign Proxy to skip the cutscene at the end of the tunnel, so instead, you have to enter the tunnel, hit the cutscene, and when the Binocucom HUD pops up, pause the game and Exit to Hideout. Then, re-enter ASA and the cutscene should be skipped.

There is an alternate to this CSS, which involves using part of the above Void Drown setup to go around and above the tunnel.

The Van Bonk Proxy and Periscope Proxy do not work.

The stuck spot for Lighthouse Skip is a little bit more inconsistent but is still doable - it is highly reccommended to just use the Boost Jump route.

# The Eye of the Storm (Raleigh boss fight)

There is a "sonic strat" you can do to skip waiting for the autosave to go away which involves getting the final hit on Raleigh midair and falling into the water or ledgegrabbing the platform. https://youtu.be/SVKRuVNmic4

# A Rocky Start

The dog proxy, also known as Cletus Yeetus, does work on Remaster, but it is much weaker than the PS2 proxy. Due to its somewhat low success rate it's only recommended to learn if you are going for a top time (for about a 40-44 time)

If you don't plan to do Cletus Yeetus but you do plan to do full World 2 Skip, follow this route:
While it is possible to skip the floor lasers cutscene, the charm route requires you to watch it in order to preserve 2 charms for the skip.

# Muggshot's Turf (World 2 hub)

# Muggshot's Turf (without PSN World 2 Skip)

PSN World 2 Skip is probably one of the hardest tricks in the run, so for those who cannot do World 2 Skip, you will have to collect 3 keys. You can collect the key for A Rocky Start at the cost of the Rocky clip, then complete Murray's Big Gamble and Boneyard Casino. These missions are performed identical to an All Keys - Original run, with the exception of Murray's Big Gamble's key load. You have to watch the key animation then run to Boneyard Casino. Not doing PSN World 2 Skip loses roughly 3 minutes in total.

# Last Call (Muggshot boss fight)

The load strat does not work here, so instead, you have to die as you hit the final mirror. Alternatively, you can also go for a precise pause when Muggshot dies, as seen at 13:39, to which you can View Map to Hideout.

# The Dread Swamp Path

DSP Van Proxy and Van Jump OoB do not work.

# The Lair of the Beast

Loading will not skip the beginning cutscene, and although you can Exit Level to skip it, it is **faster to watch it.**

# Piranha Lake

The Fish Skip "jiggle setup" doesn't work, however you can use the alternative strat where you ram into the gate on top of the invisible wall to skip this level.

# A Deadly Dance (Mz Ruby boss fight)

The load strat does not work here, so instead, you have to press Exit Level, and attempt the Double-Hit like that. You will know once you've gotten it if the percentage shows 22% (assuming you have done Rocky clip and have not entered extra levels). After exiting level from the boss fight, view map to Grave Undertaking and collect the charm here. Then immediately save game and load, and repeat, then view map to hideout.

# A Perilous Ascent

The van proxy to icicle checkpoint does not work.

The beginning proxy to OoB "firework show" cutscene skip does not work.

The PS2 Charmless Lomaykay strats, where you wedge Sly between some trees for a superjump chain, does not work. Instead, you have to do the original Lomaykay strat and charm abuse to the nearby pit.

# The Cold Heart of Hate

It is faster to watch the opening cinematic, as it is only 36 seconds

# A Daring Rescue

Similar to ASA and Muggshot's Turf, you cannot skip the cutscene via loading. However, this time, you can skip the cutscene by pressing Select, and going to Burning Rubber or Hazardous Path, then immediately going back into ADR.

PSN guide (any%)

# Can I run on the PSN version?

The digital PSN version is about 10-10.5 minutes slower than PS2, and the collection disc is even slower. In this guide I will present some numbers, and you can be the judge. If you don’t have easy access to an NTSC PS2 then I’ll definitely recommend the PSN version for starting out or for testing the waters.

NTSC-U  = America

The difference between the NTSC and PAL PSN version is a concept called H&S Skip. It’s a method to skip the health & safety screen upon starting your game on any NTSC PSN version (works for Sly 1-3), allowing for ~7.2s faster start up of your game. To set it up, simply set the system language to one of a specific selection of languages; most european languages works (i.e. german or dutch).

PSN is considered an inferior version to run on mainly because of patched out skips/glitches:

1.  **Automatic cinematics skips**
Loses __~4:15__ (can skip these by restarting the game, still loses ~40s per)
    
2.  **World 2 catapult**
Loses __~4:00__ (has to do 2 extra levels in w2 hub)
    
3.  **‘Spinning’**
Loses __~1:20__ (has to do the level like intended)
    
4.  **Load to skip Mz. Ruby cinematics**
Loses __~0:38__ (has to restart the game to skip cs)

In addition to this, here’s some more minor stuff:

5.  **Load to skip cutscenes**
Loses __~0:22__ (has to either watch or exit to level)
    
6.  **Catapult in A Stealthy Approach**
Loses __~0:20__ (has to go to cs and skip it by exiting level)
    
7.  **Menu locks during autosaves** 
 Loses __up to ~0:35__ (each "risky pause" saves 2s)

**PSN (w/ SSD) loses ~11:30 to BCPS3 (~10:30 lost to PS2) if we assume perfect spinning.**

This guide expects you to already know your stuff from elsewhere; I will mainly point at the differences. The PSN speedrun route is **mostly identical** to that of the PS2 version, but we have to do a few more levels in world 2 and have to skip cinematics manually if we wish to skip them.

# Paris
In order to skip the post-Paris cinematics your file has to be saved in Paris. With us now starting the run timing from loading a pre-made file, we no longer have to manually save in Paris so we can jump right into the cinematics and reset like normal. Unfortunately we can’t set up a file with pre-watched cinematics like on the PS2 version.

Simply reset your game to skip the opening cinematics for **worlds 1-4**, it’s slower for world 5.

# A Stealthy Approach
Since the sign catapult is patched on this version, we have to run into the tunnel, trigger the cutscene and skip it by pausing and exiting to hideout, then re-entering the level.

# World 1 Hub
If you miss pipe jump, you have to exit to hideout in order to skip the cutscene. This does save your charm, however.

# World 2
As soon as you enter the world 2 hub, load the game (like on PS2) to warp to the middle of the hub, then exit to hideout as soon as the next cutscene starts. Once you re-enter the hub the cutscene should be skipped.

From here, we have to get two extra keys in place of the World 2 catapult as it's patched out on this version. The fastest levels to do are *Murray’s Big Gamble* and *Boneyard Casino*. The fastest route is to go straight for *Murray’s Big Gamble*, then to run directly to *Boneyard Casino*. Make sure you have a charm leaving *Boneyard Casino*.

# Murray’s Big Gamble
We can load right away to skip the first cutscene. This also applies for *King of the Hill* in world 4. We have to watch the key animation at the end as we can’t load to skip it like on PS2.

# The infamous car catapult
While the traditional catapult you see on NTSC PS2 (and BC PS3) runs is patched, you can achieve a similar catapult from bouncing off of the car as seen in Ersen’s video. Feel free to go for this if you’d like, but getting this in a run is super rare. It saves ~10 seconds as it skips running all the way around.

# Muggshot
Instead of loading when hitting the final mirror, on the PSN version we have to death abuse to skip the upcoming cinematics. Simply run off the edge or jump into the abyss as you hit the final mirror.

# The Lair of the Beast
You can skip the opening cutscene by exiting to the hub and re-entering the level, but it’s actually **faster to watch it**.

# Coin charm management
Since we can’t load to get charms back, and because of the extra coins from A Stealthy Approach, Boneyard Casino (as well as the coins scattered in the world 3 hub) you either want to get a coin charm to use (speed-up or safety) in A Ghastly Voyage (later in Descent into Danger) OR in A Perilous Ascent for the Lomaykay (as the charmless setup doesn’t work on the PSN version), but the latter option makes getting enough coins for a safety charm for World 5 tougher.

# Mz Ruby
Since we can’t load after dealing the final hits to Ruby, we have to exit the game completely to skip the cinematics. This barely saves time over not skipping the last phase, and if you miss the phase skip you can simply map out after the hit on the third phase, skipping the game reset completely. Jumping always allows for a more lenient pause window (do this for Panda King as well).

# A Perilous Ascent
If you have the extra lives to spare and no charm, you can skip doing the out of bounds by death abusing next to the auto save. This does lose a few seconds over the harder out of bounds strat. If you have a charm at the end of the level, feel free to do the Lomaykay (the super jump chain). You then have to re-enter the level and map out when you hit the key.

The charmless setup **does not work** on this version.

# King of the Kill
Like in *Murray’s Big Gamble*, the opening cutscene is skippable by loading. In the level itself, some guards are harder to hit on this version as the walls feels thicker (or harder to shoot “through”).

# The Unseen Foe
The cycles are a little different on this version as this level is very laggy on PS2 (making it nearly impossible to go “too fast”). With clean movement, expect to wait a little on the fireworks cycle.

# Rapid Fire Assault
Since spinning is completely patched out, we have to do the entire level as intended. I aim for ~85 coins at the end of this level.

# Panda King
Since we can’t simply load before knocking out Panda King, we’re forced to do the map out strat (harder but faster). I recommend jumping to get a much more lenient pause window. If you pause too early (before the autosave), exit back out of the menu and mash select to bring up the map manually to hopefully get the auto save then.

It’s **faster to watch the opening cinematics** for world 5 than to skip them.

# A Daring Rescue
To skip the opening cutscene, we have to exit to hideout then maneuver the map back.

The rest of the run is pretty much identical to PS2.
