i don't get how to time the first zip. i always seem to end up near the alter can someone please help.

This first zip is done with the food down and to the left of Otus’ house. There are a lot of ways that work, but I’ll just list two. The easiest is a zip starting facing right, and going the full distance. Harder, but considerably faster if you get it (still faster even if you timed it wrong) is a right facing zip that you briefly tap up right after Otus leaves the top of the screen during the zip. Timed correctly, it will leave you here:
