100% Power Bomb Management Guide

There are a few “checkpoints” throughout the run where you’ll need to take a second and recall how many PBs you have

1. After Spirit, you’ll want to have 1 PB for Thardus for best timesave, best way to get drops is from one flying pirate in Hunter Cave, the Jelzaps in Hunter Cave Access, the flying pirates in Frozen Pike, and the Bombu in Transport Access

2. After Lifegiver, you’ll need 1 PB for Magma Pool, I usually do this check when rolling through Ruined Shrine access on the way to Lifegiver and kill the scarabs in it for drops on the way back after Lifegiver 

3. Typically you’ll want to get a Power Bomb drop from a shriekbat in Watery Hall Access, one of them will always drop a PB, can be either group of shriekbats

4. If you’re doing reverse frigate, there’s a free PB drop in Transport Tunnel D(?) from the Seedlings

5. After getting X-Ray you optimally need at least 1 Power Bomb for Ventilation Shaft, if you somehow don’t have a PB after picking it up, you can get the guaranteed drop from the seedling on the way out after picking up the artifact. Elite Control also has crates with PB drop chances but they aren’t guaranteed. You can still try your hand at them even if you have just 1 PB if you’re worried about your amount entering Mines 

6. After Main Power Bombs, your PB amount will start to matter a bit more:

- Depending on your strat for MQA, you may or may not use 1 PB for getting the item in MQA

- Depending on whether or not you do ENB, you may or may not use 1 PB for Phazon Mining Tunnel

- Sometimes you’ll want to have one extra for a spot like Fungal Hall B, where it’s very easy to have a Metroid attack you while getting the item (sometimes even getting PB drops from the Metroids, but you shouldn’t rely on them)

- If you have a lot of Power Bombs at Omega Pirate, you may use 2 PBs on him to be a bit faster, optimally you use at least 1 for trooper skip and maybe a 2nd on the final pool for a quick kill but the supers strat is still good

So you can technically use 0 PBs for Lower Mines with the right strats. In a typical run with the WR route for me, I use one for Fungal Hall B and one for OP.

There are scarce drop chances in lower mines—the only ones that you can go for that lose little time is the small chance from the Hunter Metroids you kill in Fungal Hall A and the crates with the boom box on top in MQB. Sometimes you can go a little out of the way after killing Metroids with a PB to get another drop, but optimally you don’t have to do this.

7. After Omega Pirate is where things get pretty real, because unlike Lower Mines, you can’t skip these PB requirements by doing tricks.

PPC, Maintenance Tunnel, Elite Research, Mines Security Station, and Security Access A all hard require a Power Bomb, which is 5. Now there are plenty of times where you can get away with having one less because the drop rates for PBs in the Mines Security Station, PPC, and Security Access A crates have some decent drop chances, but that’s still putting your time in the hands of RNG.

Also on rare occasions if you’re low on missiles, you may use a PB on the elevator A drops similar to any% to get some missiles, but that’s only if you really have a lot of PBs.

You’ll want to be thinking about the Mines PB checks as early as Chozo cleanup because after you enter Mines, you lose most of your guaranteed PB drops. You can get a good understanding of how you want to manage it by looking at top runs after entering Chozo and keeping an eye on their Power Bomb count.

For example, looking at my 1:11 run:

- I had 1 PB entering Chozo. You probably want to get this from a Geemer in Root Cave since you use 1 for Ice Spreader in Shore Tunnel. I had enough for Magma Pool, so I didn’t get any drops early on from scarabs.

- After Magma Pool, I get a guaranteed PB drop from Shriekbats to bring me to 2 PBs

- After getting World and entering far tallon I get a guaranteed PB drop from a seedling in Transport Tunnel D to bring me to 3. I use 2 PB drops to get X-Ray and Chozo, and then pick up the guaranteed PB from the seedling to bring me up to 2 PBs.

- In Mines, I use 1 PB to get Ventilation Shaft to bring me to 1 PB

- I get Main Power Bombs which brings me to 4 PBs and then get the guaranteed 2 PB drops from the crates next to the door to Quarantine Access A which brings me to 6.

- My MQA in my 1:11 was sloppy, but used a strat to skip needing to use Power Bombs to get the item. One of the Metroids dropped a PB, but I didn’t pick it up, maybe because it was out of the way, leaving me at 6 PBs.

- In Fungal Hall B, I opted not to use a PB for the Metroids which worked out okay, but I still got attacked by one, keeping me at 6 PBs

- After picking up MQB, I broke the crates with the explosive box for a chance at a PB drop but didn’t get it, still leaving me with 6

- Entering OP, I know I needed 5 Power Bombs if I wanted to get through Mines cleanup without any problem

- I used 1 PB to do Trooper Skip on OP (which I got the timesave of but didn’t get the actual trooper skip)

- I performed the supers strat on OP without using another PB, ending the fight on 5 PBs

- The rest is pretty textbook but for safety I also got a PB drop from the upper PPC crates which you can missile while waiting for the PPC wall blocking the item to break, so I use a PB on the PPC wall which leaves me at 4, and getting the drop leaves me at 5 PBs again

Metroid Prime Beginner Route (by Remidemmi)

The WR route uses a lot of tricks that beginners or even intermediate players may find difficult. This "beginners" route is largely the same as the WR route, but removes the most difficult tricks. Here are the main differences:

1. Do Frigate inbounds (avoids Frigate wallcrawl)
2. Get Wave normally and use IS to get sun (replaces Wave/Sun wallcrawl/IS)
3. Do far Chozo inbounds (avoids ice beam IBBFAF)
4. Fight Thardus to get Spider Ball (avoids spiderless shafts)
5. Get Newborn after getting Phazon Suit (avoids ENB wallcrawl)

The great thing about this route is that as you increase in skill, you can add these tricks without having to modify your route at all. It's generally recommended that the order players should learn these tricks and incorporate them into runs is spiderless shafts --> Wave/Sun --> IBBFAF --> frigate wallcrawl --> early newborn.
