No Damage?

Hello everyone,

I recently was asked if I had ever done a no damage playthrough of Metal Gear. Sadly I have not even played through the game. After a small amount of research I found the gas rooms are a bit tricky but are doable by quickly switching from the key card to gas mask after entering. Looks like gas damage is on a timer so timing varries unless there is a way to controll the timer that I'm not aware of. The real problem in the electric floors. You can turn them all off but the last one. After some fooling around I see there looks to be some manips with pause and with menu that can mitigate damage a bit. I was wondering if anyone has any incite on the possibility of passing the electric floors without damage or any incite on how the timers work or maybe any RAM mapping done.

Thanks for your time,

I do not have elaborate information on the final electric floor, but it might require perfect frame timing if it is possible at all.

Dunnius did the math on this a couple years ago, here's what he posted in another thread:

While it's obviously not ideal you could, in theory, use a frame counter that starts running at power on and try using it to time pauses to avoid every multiple of 16 frame because that's when you would take damage. Same with the deep water unless you have the O2 tank. Gas rooms are a little more forgiving because damage only occurs on every 32nd frame. This is of course provided I understood his explanation. There is no way to manipulate this timer either because it runs from power on to power off without stopping even on pause, screen transition, or continue/game over.
