I've recently become intrigued by the ancient game of Mahjong, and I'm eager to dive deeper into its intricacies. Whether you're a seasoned player or just starting out like me, I'd love to start a discussion about all things Mahjong!

One thing I've found about Mahjong is that it has quite a few variations in rules depending on where you're playing. Can anyone break down some of the basic rules and maybe highlight some common variations? What are some key strategies to keep in mind when playing Mahjong? Are there specific tile combinations or tactics that tend to lead to success? I'd love to hear some insights from experienced players!

As someone new to Mahjong, I'm sure there are plenty of pitfalls to avoid and beginner-friendly tips to keep in mind. Any advice for newcomers to the game? Mahjong has a rich cultural history, not just in China but also in places like Japan, Korea, and beyond. How does Mahjong differ in different parts of the world, and what cultural significance does it hold? Are there any websites, forums, or apps that you'd recommend for learning more about Mahjong or finding others to play with? I'd love to explore some online resources to improve my skills.

Feel free to share your own experiences, anecdotes, or questions about Mahjong! Let's build a comprehensive thread that's both informative and engaging for Mahjong enthusiasts of all levels.

I was going to dig into this myself this week. Instead I took a few minutes and found a starting point. It’s an FAQ last updated in 2006 for the game:

I’m looking forward to start playing. Most likely towards the end of the week.

Hello! I'm glad to see interest about Mahjong! As you said, there is some rule variation depending of the country. For this game, we play the riichi (Japanese) version. I don't consider myself as a expert or experienced player, I am more like at an intermediate level. But, the best advice I could give is to start slowly but surely. Like understanding the tiles, the hand setup to get a winning hand with suit and triplet. Some call like riichi, pon, chii, kan, etc. And learning some Yaku along the way.

You can use guide like this gamefaqs or this wiki to help you. https://riichi.wiki/Main_Page If you're visual, you can take a look at this video too:
