Patch 1.4 has made a bunch of changes, adding four new minigames and the end-of-board Bonus Bricks. This causes a few problems for existing speedrun categories.
All Minigames is no longer all the minigames. There's two ways to fix this:
- Since all the new minigames are 2v2 versions of existing minigames, change the rules to say only one version of each minigame must be completed, either the FFA or the 2v2. This keeps the existing category intact, and has precedent with some existing mario party speedrun rulesets (MP8 and MPDS). It does make the category a little confusing though.
- Make a new version of the category that requires all 64 minigames. This is simpler, but does invalidate existing runs. This could be done by adding a subcategory for Patch Version to the existing category, or with a whole new category and archiving the existing one.
I would prefer option 2, but both would work.
The Minigame Rush "Dream Teams" has all four extra minigames added, so it now has 13 minigames rather than 9. That category will need to be split by patch version or reorganised as well.
The default/recommended number of rounds for some boards have changed, Pirate Zone is now 6 rounds, and Ninjago Zone is now 8 rounds. Board categories require playing on the default number of rounds, which means those rules will need to be adjusted. If changing to the new defaults, new runs will have a significant advantage since they will have less turns. The other option is to ignore the new defaults and keep the current round numbers (8/10/10/12), but update the rules to mention that these numbers aren't the default anymore.
The new Bonus Bricks at the end of the boards create problems with the ending condition for board runs. The bonus bricks occur after the final load out of the board, which is the current end condition. This means it isn't possible to know whether you've won the board (a requirement of the speedrun) until well after the end condition. It also means that the strategy for any Individual Boards or the last one in All Boards is to skip everything on the board and use bonus bricks to win, since the time spent on the bonus bricks does not count towards the speedrun, which is a bit odd. I would suggest changing the end condition to be when the results screen appears after the bonus bricks and ending cutscene, to resolve both of these problems. That would also be consistent with the end conditions used for mario party games.
Other runners of this game may have other ideas I have not thought of as well, it may help to have a discussion.
