A "Native PS3 Timing" patch was created for God of War 1 and God of War 2 runs on the PS3 Emulator. This patch solves the long standing problem of inconsistent emulation speed in these games, making them both run approximately the same as on the PS3. The game's physics on emulator is also improved with this patch, making high jumps and other glitches (such as the Minotaur skip on GoW1 Any%) work the same as on PS3.
This patch will now be required for runs on the PS3 emulator. To make the patch work properly, the VBlank NTSC Fixup option (on the Advanced tab) must be on. There is no need anymore to change the VBlank Frequency, which can be left at 60 Hz.
The IGT timer for GoW2 will now be retired. All runs will now be timed with RTA, with the same starting point as on other platforms. Existing PS3 emulator runs using the IGT plugin have been retimed to include the extra 15-16 seconds from the start of the game. With the switch to RTA, pausing runs is also not allowed anymore.
Credits to Dobrido for creating the patch.
The PS2 Emulator rules have updated. The changes are:
• On PCSX2, old versions (before 2.0) are now banned.
• NetherSX2 (an alternative version of the AetherSX2 emulator for phones) is now allowed.
• Showing FPS on screen is now required. (On PCSX2, turn on the the Graphics->OSD->Show FPS option.)
GoW1/GoW2 PS2 Emulator and PS3 Emulator runs are now each divided into two subcategories—one with the original game, and another with cutscene skips allowed. In practice, this means you can now play on PS2 Emulator with cutscene skips, and on PS3 Emulator with cutscenes.
This change standardizes emulator rules and gives runners more liberty to choose their preferred mode to play. On GoW1 Any% and GoW2 Any% NG categories specifically, cutscene skips modify the run's route and so this change has extra importance as it effectively gives each emulator new ways to play the game. As the original games include cutscenes, the subcategories with cutscenes are simply called PS2 Emulator and PS3 Emulator. The subcategories with cutscene skips are called PS2 Emulator (Cutscene Skips) and PS2 Emulator (Cutscene Skips). GoW2 NG+ categories, which natively support cutscene skips, will remain unchanged. All current emulator runs have been placed in their correct categories.
This change also applies to this Category Extensions page. Due to technical limitations, all GoW1 and GoW2 categories here will receive the new subcategories. GoW2 NG+ runs made on emulator will be included in the default PS2/PS3 Emulator subcategories.
We have created the "Multiple God of War Games" leaderboard. This is a new place for the Greek Trilogy runs. A new category for the PSP games (PSP Duology) has also been created.
Multiple games runs are now timed differently, with the timer being paused in the transition between games. This will make runs fairer and more convenient to runners as they no longer need to rush through switching games and potentially lose time due to not having the next game pre-prepared in the background. Runners will have a maximum time of 5 minutes to switch games. Read the rules for more information.
The existing Greek Trilogy runs in the Category Extensions page have been moved to the new page, with all runs retimed according to the new rule.
New Pain+ categories have been added for Chains of Olympus and GoW3. This mode has special rules designed to make the game as difficult as possible. While very old as a game mode, it had never been speedran before, until now.
While varying slightly depending on the game, the general Pain+ rules are: Very Hard, glitchless, no upgrades, Blades-only, no items, no magic, no Rage, no chests, no projectile reflects. Exceptions are made when necessary to progress. Check each individual category's rules for more specific information.
We may in the future create Pain+ categories for the other games if there is interest.
God of War II runs made on PS3 Emulator now require the use of the In Game Timer (IGT) integrated into LiveSplit.
More information, including an installation guide, can be found on the GoW2 page: https://www.speedrun.com/gow2/news/26mwq837
The rules also apply to Category Extensions, with the exception of the Platinum and Platinum Glitchless categories, which will still be timed with RTA.
Two new categories (Berserker% VH NUR and Gná VH NUR -- VH NUR meaning Very Hard No Upgrade Run) have been added to the God of War Ragnarök leaderboard.
These categories were created to be more challenging than the very simple Berserker% and Gná VH categories, which have strats to defeat all enemies in a few hits. The rules for No Upgrade Runs are defined in the rules.
Two new categories have been created for GoW3:
- Very Hard Glitchless (NG+ glitch)
- NG+ Very Hard Glitchless (NG+ glitch)
These are glitchless categories use the NG+ glitch, allowing runners to use all weapons and items from the start of the game. No glitch other than the NG+ glitch is allowed.
Gná VH and Berserker King VH categories have been created, the first categories for God of War Ragnarök on the category extensions page. They are similar to the Sigrun categories from GoW 2018, and consist of a single short fight; however optimizing them can be challenging as you need the best strategy, with perfect execution and perfect rng.
These newly created categories are both on NG+. There is no NG equivalent category for now, as on GoW Ragnarök the difference between NG+ and NG is small. In the future, if there is interest, we may create more challenging categories such as with burdens and the Spartan set.
For Chains of Olympus and Ghost of Sparta runners:
If you play on PSP Emulator using a touch screen (only in these conditions), you are now allowed to use a macro button for quick rolling (only for quick rolling), In practice this means that you can assign an extra button to press L, R, and square with a single button, making it easier to quick roll.
Outside of these conditions, macros are not allowed. For any action other than quick rolling, macros are not allowed. If you play on PSP Emulator with a controller, macros are not allowed. If you play on any other platform, macros are not allowed.
To assist on verification, PSP Emulator runners (whether using touch screen or a controller) are now required to show the entire "Control mapping" menu when showing the settings of the emulator after a run.
The Category Extensions page now divides run into platforms, the same way that is done on the main boards. For each game, there are new subcategories for each platform that is avaliable to run, mirroring the division of the respective main board. This also means that GoW1 and GoW2 runs made on PS3 Emulator can now use the patch to skip cutscenes.
A new category has been added to the GoW2 Category Extensions board: Any% NG+ Magicless
Mirroring the existing GoW1 Magicless category, this category consists of the standard Any% NG+ rules, but prohibits the use of magic attacks. Using L2 to cancel rolls and attacks with the Bow or Euryale is allowed, as it does not actually constitute an usage of magic. This means that glitches such as Atlas Jumps and high jumps/long jumps using Poseidon's Urn are banned, while fights will be more difficult as using magic is no longer an option.
The Tycoonius Hard Glitchless category has been moved to the main God of War leaderboard, along with all existing runs.
This is because this category is approaching the time of the NG+ Hard Glitchless category, which if surpassed would make a Tycoonius run valid on the NG+ Hard Glitchless category (since the latter has no requirement on costume). To preserve the current NG+ Hard Glitchless category, it has been renamed and now only accepts runs made with the Cow costume. To avoid having a category for one skin on the main board, and another skin on another board, both categories are now found on the main God of War page.
Also, a new category has been created on for Chains of Olympus: McKratos Very Hard Glitchless. This category uses the McKratos costume, which has increased damage dealt and received, so this is a similary category to the Tycoonius and Fear Kratos categories.
