A few weeks ago while chatting with Zophar on his stream I had asked about the future of him speedrunning Faxanadu, and he shared that while enjoys the speedrun, the wingboot pause strat can trigger misophonia and just in general make for a poorer viewer (listener) experience in general when it comes to streaming a game and keeping an audience.
He asked if perhaps there was any way a rule could be added to allow for a romhack that would not pause the music when the game itself is paused.
At first I thought this might affect timing and would likely be rejected, but upon looking at the code (and developing said patch) this is unlikely to make anyone go faster, if anything it might go slower in places because the continuation of music is more work for the NES to do.
Given that improving accessibility and watchability can be a potential boost for a game where not a lot of runners are active right now, what is everyone's thoughts on allowing a patch like this on any category?
I would have no issue with allowing a music patch, personally. I would say it should be marked in some way, either with a subcategory tag or just called out in the submission comments, but I see no other issues with it.
Yeah that's maybe a good idea. I can't recall how SRC does it but I've seen many games with a column for turbo use (when allowed) and other things just in case the mods later want to change the rules due to something being discovered.
I've now uploaded the patch to the Resouces tab here so it can be tested out.
I've updated it based on feedback that there should be something on the title screen making it obvious that this patch is being used. https://www.speedrun.com/faxanadu/resources/lb2vn
I love it!! Thank you for doing this songbirder, and thanks for agreeing it should be allowed bogledowdee! Once I get my personal stuff straightened out with my career situation, I want to start running this again!
