- **Each level requires a minimum score (e.g., multiples of 20,000 points) to advance.**
- If you exceed the required points in a level, the *extra points* beyond the nearest 20,000 threshold (max 19,900) become a **spillover**.
- This spillover carries **over to the next level**, effectively reducing the minimum points you must collect there.
- Spillovers are **accumulative across multiple levels**, but capped at 19,900 points.
- So if you have a large spillover from early levels, you can collect significantly fewer points in later levels and still advance.
- This mechanic allows for strategic planning: you can “bank” points early on to ease later levels, especially on harder routes.

### Why this matters for speedrunning:

- It adds an extra layer of strategy — balancing aggressive point collection early to build up spillover can reduce time spent farming points later.
- Knowing how to optimize this spillover can lead to more efficient runs and possibly new routing strategies.
- Understanding the exact cap (19,900 points) and the modulo effect on spillover helps in precise planning of scoring targets per level.

Your insight really highlights how *Fantasia*’s point system isn’t just a flat “score-to-advance” but a rolling, interconnected system that rewards both skill and strategic foresight.

Would you say this spillover mechanic is something you actively exploit in your world record runs? Or is it more a theoretical advantage that’s tricky to pull off consistently?

Either way, huge respect for the level of analysis — this is the kind of stuff that makes speedrunning truly fascinating!

Scoring system

I did the math on a couple runs and from what I can tell the scoring system works as follows:

If you get more than the required points (see: https://segaretro.org/images/9/93/Fantasia_MD_US_Manual.pdf) in a level, these additional points spill over into the next level(s). The additional points are the points you get over the full notes (each 20,000), so the maximum spillover you can get in a level is 19,900; if e.g. you get 21,000 points more than you need in a level, the spillover will be 1000 points.

This spillover means that in the next level you can get by with collecting less points than would be required. E.g. you're playing on Easy and have a spillover of 5000 points from the first level, you then only need to collect 95,000 points in the second level.

Spillovers are accumulative, if you get a spillover A in the first level and a spillover B in the second level, you'll have a combined spillover C = A + B, meaning that you can get C less points in the third level than would be required. The maximum combined spillover can also only be 19,900, a combined spillover of 24,000 would actually give you a spillover of 4,000 points.

Watch the first jump! and other tips

alot of people ask me how i get so many points at the end of each level, idk how it works but the first 3 seconds of the game starting should explain it all, look at the numbers that pop up closely.
it has something to do with frames and bad code, works with all items but notes, notes are weird, u get no points at all from them if u try to do the same witch happens alot when u dont even meen to.

and as always press down to bounce off bad guys!
ill be back to this game soon as some one breaks my record!

GL! and have a happy run! : )

edit: (im talking about first jump of the game when i kill the book)
