00 Basic Glitches and Techniques - Explanation/Tutorial Videos

Playlist: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLJY0pMIt5OZHoWljHoBzMMmwymjZo72q6

These videos was originally made for New Vegas, but the glitches work for Fallout 3 all the same.

[section=Text Mashing]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9rZWF53tIUU
Mashing textboxes in dialogue mode is significally faster when mashing with both ENTER on the keyboard and Left Mouse Button.
Not really a glitch but in speedruns you want to go fast, and thus abuse as many mechanics as you can.
It works like this because you're basically upping the input frequency, making boxes scroll by very fast.

[section=coc Warp]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hqF7NUDQ6Ik
When an object or actor falls out of bounds and into the void in the bethesda gamebryo engine it will respawn in a pre determined spot on the map called the "CoC" (Center on Cell).
This isn't as much as a glitch as it is exploiting an engine failsafe mechanic.
This can be useful in speedruns to speed up backtracking, or to go somewhere you want on a map faster.

[section=Third Person Interaction]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-zVHo94L4ss

Third Person Interaction is an exploit or glitch in Fallout 3/New Vegas that allows your character to interact with objects through walls.
Simply go into third person, rub your face in the wall and twist the camera a bit if needed. When you see the prompt at the bottom of the screen, just use it!

[section=Time Stop]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YerYN-q2A38

This glitch stops time around you and lets you walk around in 'pipboy mode'.
By mashing the "Place Marker" button whilst bringing up the map screen you can freeze everything around you and still walk around. To undo the glitch simply press on yes or no.

Don't walk too far away though since the game still thinks you are in the pipboy, and will not load new chunks of the world until you deactivate the glitch (or crash if you walk far enough)

[section=Item Duplication]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UCncKLbGXrw

You can duplicate an item spawned in a container (spawned dead bodies also work) by depositing a stack of 6 or more other items with weight, then withdrawing them by pressing LMB and A almost at the same time.

The reason the item needs to have weight is because of the confirmation screen you need when withdrawing. If the item has no weight (such as ammo or meds) you will not get a confirmation screen.

The reason you can't dupe items from your inventory is because those items have a Reference ID, whilst items spawned in containers does not. Read more about item ID's here: http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Form_ID

This glitch works exactly the same in Fallout 3 as it does in New Vegas, and should also work on consoles (Only tried it with a controller)

[section=Speedcripple]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qde3gXBC7w0

Speedcripple is a Fallout 3/New Vegas glitch that will add speed on top of your normal movement speed by quickloading at a precise timing.
It works because when you cripple your legs, the game lowers your movement speed, and when the legs get healed it adds the speed back. So by quickloading (and thus "repairing" our legs) at a precise time when our legs get broken we can make the game add speed to our character with 100% movement speed, resulting in you moving about 150% speed.

This glitch is pretty precise and has a different timing on different hardware (and is also not possible on consoles due to lack of quickload)

This glitch also has negative synergy with the Reload Dashing glitch, since it makes your character move with the "crippled legs" animation and Reload Dashing requires the regular walking animation.

[section=Block Boosting]
https://youtu.be/3YnEsyJp_wM
Not useful for any PC runs, but it's a neat glitch that I want to show.

A trick that only works with the gamepad control scheme (so xbox controller on pc/console only)
By blocking and jumping in a specific rhythm you can gain almost double the jump velocity.

[section=Level Skipping]
https://youtu.be/xNhjV4UnCf8
Level Skipping is a glitch that allows you to basically raise your level really high with minimal effort. Note that you don't actually get to allocate any extra skills from doing this glitch.

All you want to do is to have Auto Save on Travel enabled, and exit a door to another cell/the overworld at a specific timing.

The timing is roughly when the "LEVEL UP" text in the bottom right is done fading out.

When you're on the other side of the door, simply reload the autosave, do a 180 and repeat it until you're satisfied.

[section=Stop Hopping]
https://youtu.be/IbrI3p8ViMM
Alterntaive names: Bunny Hopping, Circle Jumping

The effect of this glitch is identical to Block Boosting, except it's easier to perform and it's keyboard/mouse only.

Inputs are flick mouse, jump, hold forward, release forward when landing, jump again and hold forward.

It's an easy trick to learn, but requires some practice to be able to chain it reliably.

00: Speedrun Wiki

Goes over glitches and has written guides for some categories

01 Any% guide (UP TO DATE!)

This is a more up to date any% guide which is far more concise than others.

There are some things I left out of this guide since this is meant for beginners so watch the wr closely for the smaller optimisations if you want them.

Enjoy :)

All Bobbleheads guide

This is a guide for all bobbleheads

Please note there was a minor reroute which you can see in bananas run

If you have any problems with the guide just ask in the fallout discord for help
enjoy :)

All DLCs guide

This guide is using a slightly outdated route but its mostly up to date

The new route misses out GNR and does prime skip like in 100%

All quests/ DLC quests/ Bobbleheads guide

This is a guide to the "100%" category which shows most of the new time saves which have been found recently

https://youtu.be/gEV5rKaTyFI

Since this guide came out a few new strats have been found:
1. Ghost duping Tobar-(Point Lookout boatman) get two tickets and all of his punga both refined and normal
We do this so we don't have to pick up forks in Raven rock since we can use the punga to dupe and the refined punga is used for the tonic quest in Point Lookout - Note we need 30 normal punga and 10 refined punga Tobar does not spawn with all of this so you have to pick to anywhere in PL since its abundant-(This saves a bit more time over the fork strat in Raven Rock but feel free to use the forks since its easier to do)

Heres a video to show how to do it:
https://youtu.be/td2osKKPcKU

2. Another strat found is that when we enter the Pitt if we kill the Pitt Raider who would talk to Wernher we can run in first person to the Pitt instead of having to be slow so their dialogue finishes

Hope you enjoy running this :)

Any% Console Route

This guide doesn't cover the entire run as we keep it as close to the PC Any% as possible, it will instead explain the main differences that console has to the PC route.

Refer to to the speedrun glitches guide for a more in depth explanation on each glitch:
https://www.speedrun.com/fallout_3/guide/jfwkz

# Primary Glitches:

## Save Load (SL) Clip/Skip:
Works the same way as the PC run just using the pause menu to SL instead of QSQL.

## Block Boosting:
This is the primary replacement for Speed Cripple, during the long traveling sections we try and chain each block boost together in succession, for each one you miss its a small time loss.

## Stop Hopping:
Works the same as on PC however when chaining multiple together there is a small slow down when landing due to having to use the analog stick to move.

## Bunny Hopping:
Start off by either Block Boosting or Stop Hopping and then just as your about to hit the ground whilst holding forward there are a few frames where you can press jump again, if you timed it right you will launch with the same velocity as the first jump which is the Block Boost/Stop Hop canceling out the need to block or turn the camera.

# Route Differences:

https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL8GSZgb_SUQQG1iiT1OYrmscLHVOJo8_Y

# Route Notes:
* Saving and loading is used a lot during the run, while it is initially quicker to make a new save each time, the more saves you have the more game will slow down. This can be avoided by using one save file making the process slightly slower but avoiding the game slowing down.
* Block Boosting is heavily relied on during the run, this is because there isn't a consistent way to achieve Speed Cripple on consoles (that is known of atleast) but it is said to be possible.

This guide is a work in progress and will be updated as improvements are made to the run.

Glitchless Guide

This is an updated guide for the glitchless category:
In this video there are a few small mistakes as I have not ran the category for a while and forgot a few things such as the fact you can shoot Jonas. Other than that it should give you a good idea of what to do for any people who want to run this
Good luck :)

Glitchless Guide 2025

This is a updated guide showing off everything we know about the run, as of 5/6/2025, and everything you need to know to attempt your first run. From stop-hops to to the major skips, this guide showcases it all.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dy39OlR-Gro

OUTDATED Any% Video Guide

Hello,
I decided to make an updated any% tutorial because Rexy's chat is a little bit outdated and doesn't contain the easy version of SpeedCripple.
This game is really long compared to the run (1h22 for a 15-16min run) but I wanted to explain everything clearly so everyone could easily learn this game without difficulties. For everyone starting out to learn the run, just follow my tutorial and you shouldn't have any trouble. If you do have any question, feel free to ask me or to post a topic in the forums here on speedrun.com/Fallout_3
