Fellow XG1 crew, the leaderboards now total the IGT (in-game-timer) total lap time for every series run pb, so that we may compare runs across different versions of the game (64, switch, and ANY emu) without having to resort to timing issues relating to the load time discrepancies between versions.
In the long run, this helpful in "standardizing" the leaderboards, and the ability to include runs from all versions of the game without ambiguity between run times should now be in place. The switch to IGT lap total for series runs allows all runners to compete in series runs without worrying about specific emulator setups or differences in load times between N64 and switch versions.
The main effects of this changes are noted below:
Pros:
- Time spent in the menus is now not counted for the purpose of runs. This also means that on a fresh file without lap times, runners can avoid worrying about losing about 1 second of time from each "GREAT LAP" if they don't feel like setting 3 lap times per stage beforehand.
- Our top runners are currently split about 50/50 between emu and 64 and this would still allow runners to compete with each other instead of the alternative in just splitting the leaderboards and eliminating the competition between runners (we are still a relatively small community)
- Emu runs can be easily compared with each other regardless of hardware, choice of emulator, plugins, or settings
Cons:
- Runners won't instantly know the IGT of their runs like RTA does, as this requires a bit of extra effort to calculate
- Emulator series runs will be ever-so-slightly easier to play than other versions because of avoiding dropped frames or input delay (N64 has a few minor framedrops in parts of stages like M3, and Switch has a few frames of input lag)
Other notes:
- This will make NTSC-J viable for series runs, which otherwise loses time in the XG2-style endscreens of each track.
- Runs on Extreme difficulty rather than Novice will save about 0.5-1 second of IGT in Desert 1 due to starting Lap 1's timer with more speed from the eighth place start
- This has some minor impacts on WR history, including some real time runs that were slightly slower in game time but faster in Real Time and vice versa. I am one of the many supporters of this change regardless, even if it means I will "lose" my WR in Meltdown and some past records.
- There are some updates to the rules attached to the game and speedrun categories to ensure fairness between platforms.
