Hi. I'm GhillieGuide and I recently received moderator status. I'm motivated to make changes to grow this community would like to be transparent here about my plans to avoid confusion or conflict. Please add your thoughts/feedback about ruleset changes here will only act on proposed ruleset changes after receiving feedback. My goal here is to grow the game please let me know if I've stepped on any toes will be happy to revert changes to avoid problems.

Completed:

  • Add 1 Lap Times
  • Change Emulator to default as it represents the highest competition in categories
  • Change Time Trials to default over full game for the same reason
  • Rules update to address controller and console options(macros, overclocking, flash carts etc.)
  • Rules specifying which emulator to use, framerate options
  • Add official discord with link here to facilitate real-time strategy collaboration and celebration

Proposed Changes:

  • Change "Glitched" category distinction for Sunset Canyon to "Skips" to align with N64 speedrunning cultural norms on terminology

  • 1 Lap times are great!
  • Official discord would be nice; I've thought about setting one up, but wasn't sure if there would be enough interest.
  • Emu to default is fine, but I have been thinking about acquiring a capture card so maybe it won't be as dead soon?
  • Time trials over the other categories is best I think.
  • Rules could probably use some touch ups for sure. There isn't really a standard for hardware or emu settings. Categories like All Tracks don't specify things like if you can reset a time trial if you load in with the wrong car/miss the start boost or if Sunset Glitch is allowed.
  • I'm currently using the Simple64 emulator (a project64 branch) because PJ64 was giving problems at one point. I'm fine with either of those; not sure about others because I lack knowledge.
  • I'd very much prefer to have the category remain as "Glitched." I'd think the standard across most games is to use "Glitchless" or "No Major Glitches" as a category whereas I don't really see "Skips" being used as much. Mario Kart 64 says Skips, Mario Kart: Double Dash says Glitch, and I'd consider Sunset Canyon's route to be more of a glitch than a skip. Also I don't want to go back and rename all of my notes and videos and change the way I've been referring to it for years.

I'd be happy with all of these changes, and I'm glad that you're taking the initiative.

Having Emulator and TT as the default will hopefully encourage new players. Most people who comes across either a run or this page would be more willing to make an attempt without any monetary investment, especially since DD64 is an uncommon game.

All of my recent runs also use Simple64, performs a bit better than PJ64 (which I think is still fine to run btw) and looks a bit more accurate.

I'm fine with the changes and the suggestions. Feel free to change/add rules to the categories. When the speedrun page was generated years ago I wasn't expecting people to take much interest.

I appreciate the feedback from everyone.

About Simple64: Are the current runs using it with a framerate limited to keep it to the 60fps native to the game? This is the only setting I would be particularly concerned about in terms of fair competition not sure about Simple 64's default settings but unrestricted framerate allows better computers to gain small advantages over worse ones(example: unrestricted framerate could reach ~140fps on specific computers and maybe ~280 on better computers leading to a straight up runtime advantage). I'm essentially concerned about pay-to-win by getting the best computer possible.

Edit: If runs are unrestricted fps currently maybe there's an average between SuccessfulBread and ArmageddonNerd over 60 that we could standardize to avoid this?

Simple64 runs DD64 at 60 fps and doesn't have any variable frame rate settings, so we should probably lock it to that for all emulators.

Also, could we change up the Levels leaderboard labels? Having them all start with "Time Trial" has resulted in me already clicking the wrong headers. I'd like to propose: "Time Trial (EMU)", "Best Lap (EMU)", "Time Trial", "Best Lap". You don't have to abbreviate emulator like that, but it makes the buttons a similar size and more readable I think. I do like the way the Full Game category has the platform buttons that you can toggle between. I assume you could do the same for the levels as well.

Finished sorting all current runs into Emu/N64 under Time Trial and Time Trial Best Lap introducing another opportunity potential for human error. Any review would be appreciated message me if you find any errors on emu runs being sorted as N64 or visa versa.

Edit: Finished adding 1 laps feel free to reach out in messages if I've made any mistakes

A quick once over of the sorted runs looks right to me! Thanks for your hard work!

I've completed an overhaul for the ruleset on each category and variable(Emu, N64).

Please take a moment to review them; any feedback or correction would be much appreciated. Simple64 works well as an emulator standard because it's no longer receiving updates and ensures parity between runners.

I've also created a discord server for discussion and community building; the link can be found at the top of the page under the game name or through this link https://discord.gg/h8fgHY7nUW

I would like to double-down on my suggestion of skips being standard terminology over glitched it is a standard for n64 racers specifically(appealing to the largest potential pools of new runners). Outside of MK64 I've run DKR and Excitebike 64 skips and have friends who've done skips in Episode 1 racer, most of the n64 racers that have such large glitched shortcuts.

Should any glitches that don't create skips(like the shifting boost glitch in Cruisin' USA) be found in this game this would allow for it's inclusion without being conflated with skipping part of the lap.(the countdown trick is technically a glitch for another example)

Rules look good! Technically those old any% and 100% runs were on PJ64. Simple64 can be laggy during the Championships, but not unplayable (probably). It ideal for Time Trials. I should do some runs of Any%/100% now that I can drive better.

Here's the thing about the terminology: literally everything uses Sunset Canyon (Glitched) already. All of my posted runs, the whole guide I made, on every document I've made for DD64. The skip itself is predicated on getting the wrong way glitch which is a separate, specific thing. The set up is what makes it glitched and I don't feel like 'skip' communicates it properly. I would agree with using 'skips' if it were a category across the game because it would make sense to advertise that to runners. I just don't particularly see the value in changing it as a lone track record. I'm not going to force you to use 'glitched' personally because I also really don't want to be forced to use 'skip.'
