Hello all. Here is the updated starter CTTR Any% (No PSW) route exclusively to console runners (PSP route is below this paragraph) that's designed to help new players learn the route for CTTR Any% (No PSW). This route has tons of optimizations like completing DH C instead of the R&G, and completes EP & Evilocity FL at the TW JP. It also completes MI Stuff at the last crystal NPC. It still doesn't do Tower Jump but I'm fine with that... and players can incorporate it if they want timesave. Before I explain all the details regarding version differences, here are all the

consoles listed from fastest to slowest in-game time (IGT) for those who can’t

read the entire thing.

PS2 > Xbox > GameCube (In some categories Xbox is just as fast as PS2.

Same applies to GameCube although it’s far fewer): Any% (Xbox = PS2), Giftshop

without LAN multiplayer (GC & Xbox > PS2), All Die O Rama’s (Xbox = PS2).

PSP has its own leaderboards, hence why it’s not included.

The American region (also known as NTSC-U) is the fastest region for all systems.

There’s much more information down below listing the majority of version and

region differences that are currently known. If you stumble upon any differences

not listed here, feel free to share them either on the speedrun forums or in the crash

speedrunning discord :)

## CONSOLE DIFFERENCES

# PSP:

**Mini Game Gold requirements:** All mini game trophy requirements are cut in

half with the exception of bowling when compared to consoles. For example,

Critter Cobbler gold requirement on console is 30,000 points. On PSP, this gold is

only 15,000. This applies to all minigames except bowling.

**Hardware differences:** PSP also has an extra load screen after the 2nd cutscene

"Von Clutch makes a deal", and this results in an extra load, and the loss of your

wumpa whip powerup which will result in slower movement. Speaking of load

screens, loads on PSP are generally very slow if you are using UMD (PSP disc). If

you softmod your PSP, then you can install this game onto a memory stick and load

screens will be significantly faster (unless you already have the game digitally).

PSP also suffers from lower frame rates unless you're on newer revisions (i.e. 3000

or PSP Go), but even then it’s still bad.

**Content differences:** PSP has exclusive cars for Crash, Cortex, Pasadena,

Crunch and Nina (PSP content can be unlocked on PS2 and vice versa). PSP also

has different Battle Arenas compared to PS2/GC/Xbox. On console, the battle

arenas you have access to are Jungle Rumble (found in Mystery Island), and

Extinction Party (found in T-Wrecks). On PSP, the battle arenas you have access to

are Tragic Kingdom (found in the same spot as Jungle Rumble in Mystery Island

or in the same spot as Extinction Party in T-Wrecks), and Fight Like an Egyptian

(found in the deeper areas of Tomb Town with the green pistons).

**Corner boost difficulty:** PSP has really weak corner boosts in some areas of the

game. Here are corner boosts that are applied in No PSW/No Major Skips which

are harder on PSP: BS Jump (used to clip through the HEF bridge allowing to skip

purchasing the MI gem), HEF JP Skip (this skips the purchase of the HEF gem),

and Tomb Town lance jumps (the first 2 you do in No PSW). My theory as to why

corner boosts are harder on PSP (and also GameCube) than PS2/Xbox is that the

framerate on those versions are uncapped, which makes it harder to perform the

trick.

**Multiplayer differences:** Multiplayer on PSP is different compared to all the

other versions. You need an AD HOC adapter. From there, you can host a game

and have multiple PSPs join it via LAN, and vice versa.

PSP revisions: You can run this version on any PSP model, although I

recommend PSP Go, as you benefit from higher FPS and you gain the ability to use

bluetooth controllers. You can also use a PS Vita or a PSTV. PSTV offers an easier

way to capture your gameplay but the other consoles will do you fine.

# GC:

GameCube differs from PS2/Xbox in the following ways:

- Harder corner boosts in some areas of the game (look at the corner boost

difficulty on PSP). Worth mentioning corner boosting on GC in those areas

is easier than PSP

- Extra load screen after “Von Cutch makes a deal”

- No PSP content when comparing against PS2

- Faster loads than PS2, slower loads than Xbox

- Visual changes when compared to PS2, like the water being much brighter

- No LAN support in multiplayer

- Higher FPS in some areas of the game

- More controller ports when comparing against PS2

- GameCube increasingly gets choppier and choppier in terms of FPS the

longer you have the console running in between attempts (without resetting

the console). I recommend resetting the console after every attempt to avoid

this.

# OG Xbox:

Original Xbox differs from PS2 in following ways:

- No extra PSP content

- Minor visual changes like the water being much brighter

- Faster loads

# PS2:

PS2 differs from OG Xbox in the following ways:

- Minor visual changes like the water being darker

- Access to extra PSP content

- Slower loads

# PS3/Xbox 360:

CTTR on an Xbox 360 isn't backwards compatible unfortunately (unless you

hardmod your console but it’s not worth it unless you already happen to have a

modded 360). It might run on the oldest 360 models, but even then the oldest

models will lag a ton and at that point you're much better off getting an OG Xbox

or even a PS2 (plus you risk getting the “red ring of death” on the older 360

models).

PS3 isn’t a bad idea, you only get FPS drops when a lot of coins appear on the

screen (mainly at coin stashes). Note that you will either need to have an original

fat backwards compatible PS3 (which risks the “yellow light of death”) or a

softmodded PS3 that can play PS2 games off the internal HDD. I recommend the

latter unless you already have a BCPS3. (If you do plan to buy a PS3 and mod it, I

highly recommend you buy a slim PS3 that can run custom firmware).

## FASTEST VERSIONS FOR ALL CATEGORIES

**Any% (With PSW):** PS2/OG Xbox. PS2 is faster if you're only doing TT

bouncepad skip. If your doing the harder spacewalking skips (i.e. T-Wrecks

bouncepad skip, Astro Land early, and AL bouncepad skip), then they are the exact

same.

**Any% (No PSW):** PS2 (preferably with PSP Car), since that’s where it gains an

advantage over OG Xbox. Without it, they are the same.

**100%:** PS2 (preferably with PSP Car), since that’s where it gains an advantage

over OG Xbox. Without it, they are the same.

**Any% (No Major Skips):** PS2 (preferably with PSP Car), since that’s where it

gains an advantage over OG Xbox. Without it, they are the same.

**All Die-O-Ramas:** PS2 or OG Xbox. You don’t need PSP car for this category

since you only do Jungle Rumble. Therefore, they are the same.

**All Grand Prix:** PS2 (preferably with PSP Car), since that’s where it gains an

advantage over OG Xbox and GC. Without it, they are all the same.

**Max%:** PS2 (preferably with PSP car), since that is the only benefit you get when

running this on PS2 (unless you have a proper LAN setup with 4 PS2s). OG Xbox

is faster than PS2 without LAN since you get extra controller ports.

**Giftshop Completion:** GC/OG Xbox are preferred, ideally with 4 players each.

PS2 can also work but only with a proper LAN setup which ideally has 4 PS2s.

**All Races Co-op:** PS2 or PSP are the only platforms you can run this category

on because co-op mode in multiplayer is unlocked by a PS2-to-PSP connection.

You can either softmod your PS2 to unlock co-op mode, or unlock it the intended

way, by having a PS2 and a PSP, and a copy of the game on each platform to

unlock the PSP content on your PS2 and vice versa. If you’re on pcsx2, you can

download the save file with the PSP content already unlocked. For PSP runners, as

long as you can access the giftshop via LAN, you’ll have access to co-op mode.

**Fast Laps:** PS2 because Crash’s PSP car can greatly benefit you in the long run.

Using Trikee or Crash’s yellow car can also work if you don’t have Crash’s PSP

car. Trikke provides faster speed at the cost of poor handling, while Crash’s yellow

car provides better handling, but slower speed. Additionally, there are different

speed settings you can use: Normal, Faster, Insane. I always recommend you use

Insane unless you want to practice specific fast laps that are done in Any% runs

(i.e. Track and the Beanstalk, Tiki Turbo, etc.) In that case, the normal speed

setting works great.

# So… what’s the fastest version?

PS2 is the best for every category since you benefit from having Crash’s

PSP car (if you’re willing to mod your PS2 and do some setup

beforehand, unless you happen to own a PSP along with a copy of the

game). That being said, OG Xbox is tied with PS2 in some categories

like All Die-O-Rama’s, and Any% (With PSW) since you don’t need

PSP car. It even beats PS2 in GiftShop, (if you aren’t using LAN) since

you have extra controller ports. GameCube is a solid starting platform

(and it’s fast in GiftShop and Max% for aforementioned reasons), but I

wouldn’t recommend it in the long run, especially if you want a 21 in No

PSW or a 40 in All Grand Prix. In terms of backwards compatibility,

PS3 is quite solid if you patch your games ISO to automatically unlock

the PSP content. (assuming your PS3 can play PS2 games off the

internal hard drive).

PSP has its own leaderboard because it has a lot of differences from the

console ports that impact performance, gameplay, driving, mini-games,

etc (refer to the top of the page to see how it differs from console). So

it’s not fair to compare it to the console ports, hence why it has its own

separate leaderboard. If you were to compare PSP to its console

counterparts, it would be faster for the following categories:

- 100%

- Giftshop Completion (7 PSPs is the fastest move but can be hard to

manage and is really expensive)

- Max% (Having 7 PSPs is the fastest move but can be hard to

manage and is really expensive)

- Maybe No Major Skips (not confirmed)

- Some Fast Laps (depends on the track)

## REGION DIFFERENCES

**NTSC-U (American):** Most reliable region, has fastest loads and might have a

bigger spin hitbox than PAL, making some hitbox expansion glitches easier. The

game also runs at 30fps on PS2/Xbox and 60 fps on GameCube (GameCube might

have FPS drops in areas like rolling thunders, races, and possibly other areas too).

**PAL (European):** PAL loses sometime due to having a slightly smaller spin hitbox,

making hitbox expansion glitches harder, and picking up coins becomes a bit

harder. PAL also has slower load times in all cases, but you can still get solid times

with PAL so don't worry if that's the only thing you own. In addition, PAL runs at

25 fps on PS2/Xbox and 50 fps on GameCube, which makes gameplay a bit

slower.

**NTSC-J (Japanese):** NTSC-J has one less die-o-rama. In addition, the circle and

the “x” buttons are swapped in the menus. The coin count you receive in car events

is cut in half. For example, when completing Jungle Rumble on easy difficulty, you

normally receive 500 coins as a reward, but on NTSC-J you receive half of that

amount (in this case 250 coins). This might be manageable in No PSW if you but I

don’t recommend anyone use NTSC-J for longer categories like 100%, even if it's

the only version you own, run on an emulator (either Dolphin, pcsx2, or PPSSPP.

Pick whatever suits you. Preferably use Dolphin or PPSSPP). You need the extra

coins from the car events for the longer runs like No Major Skips and

100%/Max%. On every Japanese version of the game (PS2, GC and PSP), you

cannot name your save file. After you select "New Game", it skips to the save

prompt. Also, your in-game name is always your selected character in any car

event (e.g. クラッシュ for Crash). On top of that, every Japanese version of this 

game (except PSP) does not have LAN support for multiplayer.

**Note for PSP runners:** PSP is region free (for CTTR at least), meaning that it

always runs at 30/60fps depending on where you are in the game, even if you’re on

PAL. Additionally, on NTSC-U only, you can’t save the game in the pause menu.

You need to enable autosave before starting a new game and exit to the main

menu for the game to save. On NTSC-J only, for PSP multiplayer, every player is named

P1.

# So… What’s the best region?

NTSC-U is the best region for every category. PAL is a close second,

although it has lower FPS, which makes overall gameplay a little bit

slower, but it’s not the worst thing ever. NTSC-J is the worst region

because of lower coin rewards, and I discourage running on NTSC-J,

even if it’s the only platform you own. I’d suggest you emulate the game

via Dolphin, pcsx2, or PPSSPP (preferably Dolphin or PPSSPP).

Gift Shop Completion - PSP Route

**Required Coins: 72,250**

Note that vehicles and outfits are not sold in the Gift Shop on PSP due to the character choice always being random.

**Requirements for this route:**

- 7 PSP Systems (ideally at least one 2K or 3K model for video output)
- 7 copies of the PSP version of the same language/region
- No Japanese copies of the game (gives weaker difficulty bonuses)

If optimising for LRT, have P1 run on a UMD with no Memory Stick inserted. This will remove the autosave prompt when returning to the lobby. Other players can run either UMD or Memory Stick.

If optimising for RTA, have all 7 players run digital copies off a Memory Stick. This will reduce the time spent on loading screens, especially for The Tragic Kingdom.

**The Route:**

1. The Tragic Kingdom x2 (7 players, 5 KOs, Rocket Launchers, Hard, Normal Speed) +5,100 Coins per round
2. Buy Rings of Uranus for 7,500 Coins
3. Rings of Uranus (7 players, 3 Laps, Co-op On, Hard, Normal Speed) +7,800 Coins
4. Buy Insane Speed for 10,000 Coins
5. Rings of Uranus x7 (7 players, 3 Laps, Co-op On, Hard, Insane Speed) +7,800 Coins per race
6. Buy all remaining items (wallet should show at least 55,100 before and 350 after)

**More detailed strats/notes:**

- While the PS2 arenas are valid options for the starting battles, they give less coins to 2nd than the PSP arenas.
- In Battle Arenas, teams are randomised, and having two humans on the same team does not pay any more than having one.
- When the battle starts, count the number of gunners. If there are four, swap all players. Find whichever player has the lone AI gunner and drive them near the others for quick kills.
- On the results screen, press X on Players 2-7 while waiting for P1's coin tally. They will return to the lobby faster.
- In Co-op Races, teams are predetermined based on player order. For example, P1 & P2 are always together, with P1 being the starting driver. Only P7 will ever be paired with an AI, and the AI will always be a gunner.
- Characters and vehicles are chosen at random, but all clashed vehicles have the same stats, so this does not matter.
- While loading Rings of Uranus, turn off the WLAN Switches for Players 3-7 on the loading screen. This will cause those players to disconnect from the match, which P1 reads as being AFK. This way, you will not need to wait for those players to finish before the results screen.
- You can also disconnect players mid-race, either with the WLAN Switch or with the pause menu. However, this is difficult to execute while controlling P1.
- Disconnecting P2 is a valid option, but not a necessary one.
- DO NOT DISCONNECT PLAYER 1!!! If P1's WLAN Switch is turned off, the entire match will be aborted, and you won't get paid.
- Beware of the lone AI gunner sitting idle at the finish line. This is the only major element of RNG during the races.
- While having an 8th player does give 600 more coins per race, mathematically it doesn't reduce the number of required races. The only way 8 players would save time is if we could do one race of Tiki Turbo faster than two Battle Arenas.
