105% Routing/Masks Guide by Tebt

110% Solo Route (PocketStation)

Before the run:

- Delete all Crash 1, Crash 2 and Crash 3 save data from the PocketStation (not required for NG+ runs)
- Go to the Extras menu and download Crash Anywhere. This will reset its save data and automatically install Dance 1.
- Set the PocketStation's calendar and clock to 1999/1/2 and 02:00, respectively

General route is identical to 105%, with the following exceptions:

- Hot Coco one-cycle is not possible; you must collect the Gem and Relic in separate passes.
- Wait to lower SFX until after loading into Under Pressure at the start, playing Dance 1 during the cutscene.
- After both Under Pressure Gem and Dance 1, save and quit to the title screen, then download Dance 2 and load your file. This process will repeat as more dances are unlocked.
- Play Dance 2 at some point during Warp Room 1, preferably when there's significant downtime such as during a level exit.
- In Warp Room 2, do Hog Ride Crystal first to unlock Dance 3. Play it at some point during the rest of the Warp Room.
- In Warp Room 3, do Deep Trouble Crystal/Gems first to unlock Dance 4.
- When doing Road Crash Relic, stay idle at the start while playing Dance 4. This will prevent the AI racers from interfering.
- In Warp Room 4, do Bye Bye Blimps Crystal as early as possible to unlock Dance 5. Since entering the level removes masks, a good time would be when you already have no masks, or just before a Warp 4 Relic.
- Play Dance 5 at some point during Warp Room 5.
- In Warp Room 5, do Orange Asphalt Crystal first to unlock Dance 6.
- After installing Dance 6, swap to Crash 1 and Crash 2, creating a save file in each and playing Dance 6 during bootup. Creating this save data now will reduce loading times for the Extras menu in earlier visits.
- Once you've finished Dance 6 and created Crash 1 and 2 saves, set your clock to 00:00 and 12:00 to get both Fake Crash photos. This will unlock Dance 7, which you should install when you next boot up Crash 3.
- Play the first part of Dance 7 during the start of Orange Asphalt Relic.
- If you haven't finished Dance 7, the Boulder minigame and the Puzzle minigame by the time you unlock Cortex-1, enter it and leave Crash idle while you do so. When you inevitably Game Over, the Warp 5 levels will reopen.
- If you have all the photos when you get the last Gem and Relic, immediately save, boot up Crash Anywhere, and load your save to officially bank the +5%. After that, do Cortex-2 and stop the timer on collecting the Speed Shoes as usual.
- If you're missing any photos after the last Gem and Relic, do Cortex-2 and get all remaining photos during the credits. Once the last photo is obtained, save and load as before and stop the timer when loading the file.

This is not a full tutorial. If you don’t know how the game’s movement works, go watch The8bitbeast’s video.  Even if you think you do know, go watch it anyway if you haven’t.  And if you need movement strats, go reference the top few runners.  This is mainly a dump of cycle info that should probably be written down somewhere outside of a handful of people’s brains.  Some of this isn’t even relevant to anyone not approaching 43 or low 44 so haha

Before the run, death abuse to reset the global cycles in order to make them predictable.  Optimally, you should also wait a bit afterward before starting the next run to push the cycles forward a bit further, to reduce waiting in 2.  Throughout this guide I’ll be mentioning specific times on the timer a lot for the sake of describing cycles, but note that this depends on all of the following olo
- How good your movement is from the point where I mention the time to the point where the cycle actually matters
- The amount of time you delay between death abuse and starting the next run, offsetting the relationship between your timer and the global cycle timer
- The amount of time you spend in the pause menu turning off sfx  (cycles don’t run while game is paused)
- Loading times  (cycles don’t run during these either)

WARP 1

As mentioned above, death abuse before run to reset cycles.  The immediate goal is to get past the electric plates in 2 with minimal waiting.  Adjust the amount of time for which you wait after the death abuse accordingly.  After 2, the rest of warp 1 has no global cycles worth caring about so you can really do whatever you want (as long as 4 is done after 1 because masks).

WARP 2

The primary cycle concern here is the position of the scimitar enemies in 7.  If you get past the first one while he is walking away, then you can also get past the last one while he is walking away.  If the first enemy is swinging and you have to go over him, then there’s a good chance you’ll lose a mask to the last scimitar, and even if you don’t, the movement is slower anyway.  If you do lose a mask, you can get the extra mask from the changing crate at the start of 6, losing about 2 seconds.

In order to ensure a good cycle in 7, the warp 2 level order should vary, with a few possible options.  Here is my general approach, starting with the *powerup textbox time* on Tiny (i.e. the splitting method used by Koji and Zoey but not me because I just really wanted to confuse everybody I guess):
7:52-7:53 -- 7 first, followed by either 9 or 6 depending on the weather in China and the amount of food I've eaten that day
7:54-7:56 -- 9 first, usually followed by 7.  If on the lower end of this range and 9 was good (so probably 9:12-9:13 touching the portal at end of 9), you may be too early into 7, so do 8 next to push the cycle forward a bit.  If 9 was bad such that you’ll be too late into 7, do 6 next and pray I guess?
7:57-7:58 -- 8 then 7
Anything slower -- either go time how long it takes for the scimitar guy to walk back and forth once and add that cycle length to all of the above times or just go faster

WARP 3

The primary concern here is the electric plate near the start of 12.  If you know you’re going to just barely miss a cycle, you can do 14 first.  If that goes well enough, it’ll reduce the amount of waiting you have to do at the start of 12.  A Dingodile powerup time of 15:00 + multiples of 4 seconds roughly marks the cutoff point between one deep trouble cycle and the next.  For example, if I got 15:03, I knew I could make the cycle I wanted, but with high 15:04, I knew for sure I would miss it by a little bit.

Aside from that detail, there are two possible relevant routes for warp 3:  12 (no damage abuse, no god cycle) -> 13,  or 12 (one damage abuse, god cycle) -> 11 -> 13.  I do the first route, Koji does the second.  The second route is marginally faster (less than a second) when everything goes well, but this requires 12 movement to be very good, and also then needs 11 to be good enough to get favorable cycles in 13.  The first route gives free consistent cycles in 13, along with 12 obviously being easier.  Since the difference is so small and the non god cycle route is so much easier (seriously, 13 is a pain), I honestly don’t recommend the god cycle.  43:43 is possible without it anyway so what more you do want???

Oh yeah and make sure you damage abuse once in N. Tropy, saves like 2s or something

WARP 4

The water in 20 is *not* connected to global cycles, and there’s a god cycle in there that saves ~3s.  It’s the most difficult thing that exists in this category right now, my PB doesn't do it, and it looks roughly like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XSNbxxiVzuQ

18 is first to get the mask, and then we always do 20 after this for some reason but it doesn’t really need to be that way.  17 is last because it takes away your masks.  Anyway the primary global cycle is that of the doors in 16. The laser gates in 19 are also global cycle and kinda matter, but they only slow you down somewhat if they’re on a bad cycle since you can go around them.  You can’t really do anything about their cycle anyway since 16 doors matter more and you don’t have any other choice here unless you defy this pointless trend of doing 20 first every time.

Rough plan based on the time touching the portal at the end of 20:
28:22-28:24 -- 19 -> 16
28:25-28:27 -- 16 -> 19
For times outside this range, add or subtract multiples of 6 seconds to the above (the length of a full door cycle in 16)

WARP 5

The 3 platforming levels basically have to be done in the order 25 -> 21 -> 23, so the only thing we can really care about is the door cycles in 25, which again are 6 seconds.  Doing 22 first pushes the cycle forward by ~1.5-2s, or more if your driving sucks; doing 24 first pulls the cycle backward by like a second or something.  If you don't do 22 first and are on a cycle where you know 21/23 will suck, you could try doing 22 in the middle there somewhere and see if it improves things but I never got this far.

You want to make it through the first door in 25 with enough leeway to also make it through the second door before it closes, and you can damage abuse on the mummy if it’s going to be close.  Once you’ve made it through the second door, there’s a fair amount of leeway to make the last door:  “perfect” movement gets you to the last door moments after it closes.  If you are slow enough that the last door doesn’t spawn until after it would have already closed, the closing won’t happen and so it may remain open for an unusually long amount of time.  This phenomenon doesn’t save time since it requires you being slow at getting there in the first place.

If you barely make it through the first door, you probably won’t make the second door.  And if you don’t make it through the second door, it is then much tighter, but still possible, to make the last door before it closes again (losing ~2-3s since you are barely making the end of the same door cycle you would have made if you hadn’t gotten stuck behind the second door).

Rough plan based on N. Gin powerup time:
33:59-34:00 -- 25 first
34:01-34:02 -- 24 first
34:03-34:04 -- 22 first
Again, add or subtract multiples of 6 seconds for times outside this range.

Item Glitch guide (any%)

HOW THE GLITCH WORKS (also applies to Crash 2):
This game has an intended feature where if you bounce on multiple enemies consecutively without touching the ground, you are given a small reward. The 2nd bounce gives a wumpa, the 3rd bounce gives 2 wumpa, the 4th bounce gives 3 wumpa, and the 5th bounce gives an extra life. There is a combination of oversights that turn this feature into a useful speedrunning strat by which we can get 25 crystals very early in the game and thus unlock all of the remaining boss fights without playing most levels.

1. Crystals and other such items are stored in the game's memory in such a way that if you chain over 200 bounces, the game actually gives you these items as the bounce reward. Crystals are awarded by bounces 201-264. (Yes you can get more than 25 crystals)
2. It is possible to prevent the bounce counter from resetting upon touching the ground, by preventing Crash from entering his normal standing/walking animation state. To do this, you must be spinning when you land on the ground, and then immediately either jump or go into a crouch.
(Advanced route only):
3. Bouncing on most boxes, including arrow crates, also increases your bounce counter, though it does not actually grant the associated rewards.
4. Exiting a bonus round does not reset your bounce counter as long as you spin when you land on the exit platform, and hold crouch as the platform touches down in the main level.

BEGINNER ROUTE (Tiny)
The Tiny boss fight is the only place in this game where an infinite number of enemies will spawn if you just keep waiting. The idea is to bounce on as many lions as you can during each wave, and then spin jump around the arena to avoid Tiny while maintaining your bounce counter. More lions spawn per wave after you've hit Tiny twice. Bounce on 225 or more lions to be safe; even though you only need 20 more crystals by the time you get to Tiny, you may need more than 220 bounces, and I can't be bothered to check what the exact needed number is when this is just the beginner route anyway. Watch Jacques' any% run for a visual example of this Tiny strat.

ADVANCED ROUTE (Bone Yard + Gee Wiz)
There are some additional details about the glitch necessary for full optimization of the number of bounces done in this category:
1. Landing on the platform to exit a bonus round (with a spin) actually adds 1 to your bounce counter.
2. Bouncing on a ! crate does not increase the bounce counter. More specifically, the bounce itself adds 1 to the counter, but triggering a ! crate in any way subtracts 1 from the counter.
3. Each crystal in the game is a unique item and cannot be granted twice. If you do 201 bounces in a level to get a crystal, and then 201 bounces in another level, then when you return to the warp room from the second time, you will still only have 1 crystal. In this case Crash will still perform the warp room animation of throwing the crystal into the air, but it will be a duplicate that does not increase your number of crystals; do not be fooled.

The actual route involves two steps. First, perform the item glitch in Bone Yard to get 5 crystals more quickly than playing each of the 5 levels normally, then beat Tiny like normal. Second, perform the item glitch in Gee Wiz to get 20 more crystals. Both cases will make use of the bonus round, so remember to spin upon landing on the bonus exit platform, and to be holding crouch before the exit platform touches down in the main level.

Bone Yard:
Once you reach the forward-moving section of the level, take care to avoid killing any of the enemies, and enter the bonus. Do 197 bounces on the arrow crate, bounce on two more boxes on your way to the exit, and then landing on the exit platform brings your bounce counter to a total of 200. Bounce on the 4 enemies in this section of the level, starting with the one in front of the bonus platform and working backwards. Once you've bounced on the 4th, you can drop the bounce counter and perform normal movement to finish the level. Those 4 enemies plus the level's regular crystal give you the 5 you need to unlock Tiny.

Gee Wiz:
Avoid killing any enemies starting with the pair of frogs after the first checkpoint, and enter the bonus. Along the way you may also want to break some of the boxes that could become an obstacle during the item glitch backtrack. Make sure to leave at least one box intact from the large stack on the hill just before the bonus round.

Do 202 bounces on the arrow crate, bounce on 1 box in addition to the ! crate (which doesn't count), and land on the exit platform for a total of 204. Then start working your way forward, and backtrack once you've killed the enemy at the end of the level. In order to avoid wasting enemies on duplicate crystals, you need to bounce on a box instead of an enemy for two specific bounces. After 8 enemies, you'll arrive at the above-mentioned stack of boxes at the top of the hill. Bounce on one of these. Then after bouncing on 2 more enemies, bounce on the box on top of a TNT at the bridge. Continue on for 9 more enemies, ending at a pair of frogs. Death abuse to spawn closer to the end of the level, and finish. These 19 enemies plus Gee Wiz's own crystal give you the remaining 20 you need to unlock all bosses.

Here's a full breakdown of how to get every single photo in Dokodemo Kurasshu-Kun (Crash Anywhere) on the PocketStation, which can be accessed with the NTSC-J version of Crash 3.

There are two spreadsheets included. The first shows the criteria for getting every single photo. The second is a detailed breakdown of the Virtual Pet photos, with consistent date and time stamps for each.

Note that this schedule only covers Jan 2nd-22nd, 1999. Jan 1st is set as an Anniversary by default, and you can never get any photos on Anniversary dates. Meanwhile, the 22nd is the earliest date where all 65 Virtual Pet photos can be obtained. The year 1999 was chosen as it was the year the PocketStation was released, and is what the calendar defaults to if the battery is depleted or removed.
