Hello Everyone!
I recently gave Super Black Bass 2 a go, and I am having a lot of fun with it. It plays just like the US version (so much so that your muscle memory from the original will make translation unnecessary), but there are some noticeable (and imo awesome!) differences.
- The dialogue is significantly faster to skip through as it seems to display faster. I think this is fairly common with the Japanese versions of SNES games.
- The boat travels WAY faster and driving it feels much smoother. This is probably the main advantage over the US version. You can save a lot of time once you get the hang of it.
- There are some really neat non tourney related features, such as the presence of a "non tournament" live well, separate from the live well that you are storing your bass in. This could make for some interesting sub categories allowing us to catch multiple non bass and compare them easily.
- There is also a bit of a button mash minigame that sometimes happens when you are bringing the fish into the boat. If you do not button mash fast enough the fish gets away. This can be really useful if you happen to accidently catch a smaller fish as you can just real it in and let it go at the last minute which will allow you to cast again to catch the bigger fish. I use it in the video example below.
- The Tournament Skip Glitch works!
Super Black Bass 2 released in September of 94, 2 months before Bassin's released in the US. I am not really sure why the decision was made to get rid of some of the cooler features like the second live well and the faster boat, but the Japanese version feels better for me.
I would like to open a discussion on the possible use of this version for speed running. I think the advantages in dialogue and boat speed are great, but I think it would need to be a category of it's own.
I am currently running this on an emulator. I think you guys should give it a try and see how it feels.
Here is a video of my 2nd attempt at a glitched run. All kinds of time loss in there, but I think it shows the potential of the game.
Seems interesting!
I agree that the Japanese(JP) release would require separation. It would be unfair to compare their times due to the mentioned differences.
I have implemented both of the current leaderboards for the JP release separately.
If you want to have this run on the new leaderboard, please submit it to the new JP subcategory of any% Glitched. I don't want to add it without your consent!
There's some really cool differences in the JP version. Boat speed is a major improvement (I'd love to go tubing on the back of that boat!), but also the visual indicators for what to do when your fish is trashing about. Very awesome.
But my favorite thing to see what John the Guide's sprite! LOL
