I wouldn't believe it would be.

You do not need a save pack to run the game but if you do not have a save pack you would have to play through the entire game without saving and loading. It would make getting the witch ring extremely unlikely and you would only have one chance at each of the boss fights. That being said it is quite possible you just need to farm more XP on your casters at the ogre pit to make up for the +2 wizard loss from not having the witch ring.
