Should there be some sort of rule in place for no pre damaged glitch boy level runs? As this is "setup time" as well as changing the level to basically start on a different level altogether compared to other characters. I believe its much fairer if a glitch boy run has to damage and complete the level in the same run to be a valid time.
Would involve much more tedious runs having to leave and re-enter the level to reset & to verify though.
Not really a fan of setting up the level without the timer running but this is going to be annoying for both verifiers and runners no matter the ruling I think. Rtm every attempt is annoying and setting up the level after every completed attempt (because this also resets the walls) is also annoying. I think no pre-damage is more in the spirit of the run and more consistent with strats that could actually save time in fullgame personally.
I like setting up the level, it makes Glitch Boy more of a character outside of a faster shorter Nate. We need differences between characters like that.
And if we want time save that would matter in Full Game, either play Full Game and SMB64 on levels or change all the levels to only allow SMB64 and MB.
Glitch Boy is fun as it is.
He is still his own unique characteristic in that he can destroy terrain during a run to make massive shortcuts like in wastes 5 where he is the best choice by far even without pre-damaging.
Its just when you can pre-destroy & set up most of the level you are not starting the level at the same fair starting point as the other characters.
It makes it a lot harder to use its Glitch power when you've got to do it on the fly, which I suppose adds some charm to using the character, but it's weighing that against the fact that resetting to the world map every attempt would drive even the most patient people up the wall hahaha
If it helps SMB already came up with a great script to reset by using CMD if you are on PC. Makes it just as easy as any other character. Posted in discord here
I play xbox o7 And you shouldn't need to download an external program to make running a character bearable imo
I wonder if the devs would be willing to add a shortcut like pressing L3 and R3 three times quickly to fully level reset, which would be especially helpful on console. And then they could have the level retry keep the damage. Perhaps that would be hard to implement, though, I'm not coding savvy. As for runs, any difference between GB and Nate will translate on the LBs. When levels are hyper optimized they'll surely be even more differentiated. That wouldn't change the feelings of similarity with undamaged runs but would it be getting carried away to add another 160 character levels to the 3200 already existing by adding a distinguisher? Fresh Level GB and Pre-Damaged Level GB as their own characters in the context of IL LBs.
I'd like that idea, just a quick version of being able to reset. Shouldn't be hard to implement, it should just be the equivalent of loading into a level for the first time, so there'd be a single 1s loading screen and nothing else. Even if this were to be implemented, I personally stand by being able to mould the level with Glitch Boy beforehand.
Like adding another character as 'Glitch Boy pre-damaged'? That might be a good idea, but for those primarily interested in total level times going down rather than particular character times going down, I doubt that'd be a solution for them. I like it though, and I think it'd be a good compromise.
I personally don't care enough for a character split, id rather it just be allowed or banned. Personally I don't think pre damage makes any sense and would ban it but if the community decision is to allow it then just allow it imo
I hunted for the 1-11 WR and if I didn't pre-damage some walls out of bounds, the collisions just straight up bugged.
Those that are mostly interested in finding the fastest way to beat a level can just continue to ignore character optimizing barring when that optimization revolutionizes the meta like MB64 and Bing Bong, Rented. I love the game so I want to see all the specific optimization possible 😃. Fastest overall is the game. Character development is the game within the game. At least from a viewer standpoint the GB pre-damaged is interesting and adds a way to be creative…by being destructive, lol.
For me and I assume SMB_10 by the way he has voiced his concerns, neither of us can get past the fact pre damage requires set up time.
It's similar to other games where immediately quitting out to the main menu skips a long initial cutscene to save time. They count that menu time and don't just start the timer after first cutscene skip as its part of finishing the game.
This to me is the same thing, predamaging is the setup time that should be counted to a full level run. There's plenty of fun skips without pre-damage especially dark world 4
@Madmanpotato I’ve been following some of your core runs and I’d absolutely have to agree, No pre damage does have some skips of its own, like being able to jump of some walls that’d automatically be deleted after one attempt. And yeah, set-up time can be a hassle especially if it’s all being set-up for a single level. Still, I think that adds charm to playing with Glitch. I don’t feel like it’s a Portal Waiting Room situation because you are still actively influencing the level and how your winning attempt will go, unlike wading through cutscenes. Also I have to agree with @CzechHimGenes , it does look really cool when pulled off lol
I have the WR for the 4th warp level with glitch boy and I think glitch boy should be in major glitch category full stop! Imagine in super metroid or any popular speedrun game you could unlock a “glitch suit” and it allowed you to glitch through the entire game. It would destroy any % for every game. So I’m not sure why it’s allowed in any% on this game
In an Any% Full Game scenario it wouldn’t be unlocked for a standard run anyways, the only situation you’d get it in would be major glitches anyways. Additionally I feel adding major glitches to the IL leaderboards wouldn’t make a whole lot of sense just for glitch boy, I think the categorisation system for characters already in place works fine.
I’m strictly talking about level WR’s for this game specifically! Before glitch boy it took me a few days to beat a WR. Someone beat it with glitch boy, I unlocked him then beat it within 5 minutes! No skill at all lol
I don't mind anything goes with the character tbh, yeah only glitch boy can glitch through a level and get WR but at the same time many characters accel at different levels. For example the current WR's being set with bing bong, hes the only character that can projectile launch himself across the level like that and it only works on certain levels same with glitch boy.
I say use everything the character is capable of imo
I mean, no matter what every level still takes skill to beat haha, also you could’ve beaten it in 5 minutes but that just means there has to be more to improve in the runs of the level before the grinds take hours.
Glitch Boy ruins ILs the same way Bing Bong ruins ILs, where you can just jump through the entirety of a level and ignore all the game mechanics. If Glitch Boy goes, Bing Bong should go, BUT I think they should all stay because they all offer cool ways of beating the levels.
I agree with Xialdin, we should be able to use all that a character offers to get WRs. If you don’t like Glitch Boy, play a different character, there are 19 others.
