**Touhou basics**



**-Controls**



**You have a main weapon that fires in two patterns.**

**With control A/B, you switch between these patterns, by tapping, or holding down the button. (With control C/D, the two patterns are on separate buttons.)**



**You have a bomb in two patterns too - see the red boxes. The bomb type depends on tapping/holding fire too. Bombs damage for a few seconds, so while the screen is black you're immune from damage I think.**



**Normally you move fast. If you hold fire, your arms come in front and you enter focus mode - you slow down.**



**Your hitbox is very very small, in the centre of your character. Just a few pixels square! If you lose a life, your bombs reset. You have 9 continues (just mash if that screen comes up) so it's best to use bombs when you are in danger!**



**The red dress girl is Reimu. She's balanced and good for beginners. Her first layout (curved arrows for attack) gives you homing attacks and 3 bombs default, best for starting with. The black dress is Marisa, the advanced option, because her second layout has huge lasers but just 2 bombs. We haven't used the third character, but she gets four bombs per life.**





**-Mechanics**



**Enemy movements are scripted, but bullets often follow you. So you can try to strafe and create neat zones to go between. It's only bullets and attacks that hurt.**



**P icons increase your power, up to 128.**

**Blue icons increase Point - when you reach the number below that score, you get an extra life.**

**Don't worry about graze - that's just close calls with bullets for score.**

**Yellow B icons are bombs, Yellow 1 icons are extra lives.**

**Yellow F icons give you full power. You'll be able to grab one at bosses, or after a continue.** 

**If you go to the top 1/4 of the screen, you'll auto-collect every icon on screen.**

**Don't worry about Cherry points - basically if you get enough you get a brief powerup magnet and 1 free hit insurance, I think.**



**There are mid bosses in each stage, and a level boss. At the bottom of the status screen is Time - if you survive until 0, you pass, but you can kill them too. The exception is the very final boss after the temple in stage 6, there you just have to survive.**

Homebrew Blitz - Important note for Raven's Gate

During the HB we discovered it's possible for bomb explosions to fail, and if you copy the WR route you'll have no sword. The recommended solution is to pick up the sword in level 1 to farm 30 gold should you run out of bombs before the final barrier in level 4. Otherwise you risk a full reset!
