FF Speedrun Route Guides - Any% / 100% + No Custom Heroes / Custom Heroes

# **Introduction**

Freedom Force in a speedrunning context has several features that are worth considering before jumping in.

1. Damage rolls in Freedom Force are 50-150% of base damage, on every attack, be it from friend or foe.

2. All enemies across a map spawn immediately, and often wander around & attack friendly civilians.

3. Enemies have fairly simple attack patterns, but they do vary depending on circumstance. Generally speaking, enemies use ranged or melee attacks on their closest target depending on their distance to said target, they use DoT effects (e.g. Acid Burn) on their closest target assuming that they are not already afflicted, and they use AoE effects/melee attacks if surrounded by more than one enemy.

The combination of points 1-3 means that Freedom Force is a fairly dynamic game to speedrun. It is nearly impossible to nail down exact & repeatable sequences of actions for most sections of the game, so a strict sequence of button presses from start to finish is not very useful.

That said:

4. Enemy numbers are fixed, and they tend to spawn in fixed locations (and then wander a little). In some cases, enemies stand still and only go hostile once they are triggered to do so (either by attacking them or running over a trigger located on a certain portion of the map).

5. There are some instances of ‘infinite spawning enemies’ that appear ‘after’ a mission has begun, however they spawn in predictable locations and have been factored into 100% runs (either by ignoring them or by acknowledging 100% as ‘all enemies defeated’ as opposed to a fixed number).

6. Prestige is accrued over the course of the campaign, and can be used to recruit various heroes (notably for speedrunning: Man O’ War, Supercollider, and ‘Custom Heroes’ if completing a custom run). Given point 4, this prestige amount is predictable for the most part, besides a little loss due to civilian & building damage (and ‘prestige loss’ is not counted for 100% runs as it is impossible to control in certain instances).

7. Prestige and XP canisters spawn in fixed locations. For 100% runs, these must all be picked up, along with secondary objectives completed & all fixed enemies + ‘select infinite respawning enemies’ defeated. For Any% runs, the majority of XP canisters are picked up, but some enemies/prestige canisters/secondary objectives are ignored for the sake of time.

The combination of points 4-7 mean that despite there being no ‘absolute’ fixed route through the game, there are ‘broad’ routes that can be taken. In addition, Heroes can be leveled up in a guaranteed order, and certain Heroes can be recruited in a ‘roughly’ guaranteed order, both for Any% and 100% runs.

Given all of this: This document is intended to be effectively a handbook for speedrunning the game, and is set out in a format such that it can potentially be used in the middle of a run.

There are 4 sections depending on speedrun type (Any% + No Custom, 100% + No Custom, Any% + Custom , 100% + Custom). Each section will cover:

**A) Title + Recommended Heroes for each Issue & Stage.** Issue = an instance where heroes can be levelled up & selected beforehand. A stage = a new map within a certain issue where heroes have been healed to full, but cannot be levelled up or reselected. This can get confusing, and so for clarity from here on out, each issue & stage will be referred to as a ‘Mission’, with number being the issue and letter being the stage (e.g. ‘Mission 11b’ is ‘the second stage of Issue 11, i.e. Wanted: The Minuteman’).

**B) The concrete objectives for each mission, depending on run type.** This will outline the ‘actual’ objectives that the player is required to complete to succeed a certain mission. For Any%, often this involves defeating a key enemy and interrogating them once they have surrendered, which will only be allowed once all enemies within a certain radius of the surrendered foe have been defeated (radius = around the distance of a ‘long range power’). For 100% this will also include secondary objectives, Prestige & XP canisters, and all ‘non infinite’ enemies being defeated.

**C) General routes for each mission**. This will include the order in which enemy groups should be fought, but NOT specific info on how to fight each group (unless there is a unified approach across all difficulties, in which case this is noted generally). Directions given in terms of north/south/east/west are in reference to the camera angle from the start of the mission. For more information on tactics for fighting individual enemies, it’s best to consult videos of a specific run type.

**D) Attribute/power level ups at the ends of certain missions.** This will simply be a list of powers to take at the conclusions of certain missions, given expected XP thresholds assuming a guide is followed. Exact XP/level numbers are NOT given for each hero, as this is again just information overload. Instructions on what powers/attributes to take and when are enough.

This guide is one of 4 route guides for Freedom Force speedrunners. Due to their length exceeding what this website will allow, these guides will be written as Google Docs.

The two Any% guides, and the two 100% guides, will be exactly the same for Missions 1-5, regardless of whether the run is Vanilla or Custom Heroes. This is because Custom Heroes are not available until Mission 6, and so the runs leading up to this point are exactly the same.

Note that Difficulty Setting is not covered as a separate category. This is because as things currently stand, I do not see a need for discernable differences in hero selection or general mission routing, across the two difficulty settings that I run (Normal and Very Hard). There are certainly differences in how fights are executed on a small tactical scale (Very Hard requires a slower defensive playstyle, Normal not as much), however these differences are not sufficient to warrant a separate chapter section in this guide.

This guide is also not intended to be a ‘how to conduct fights on X Difficulty’ guide, and for more info on that topic, I would suggest watching recorded runs on each difficulty and taking notes of how particular fights are executed. This guide is again, intended for those who are ‘mid-run’, and so to avoid information overload, mid-mission notes are kept as sparse as possible whilst including key details.

A final note before jumping in: None of this information is intended to be static (if I have learnt anything from speedrunning, it’s that it is hubris to assume that you know a perfect way to do ANYTHING!!). As runs evolve, the info here shall be updated as more information is learnt about the game.

Freedom Force 100% Guide

# Introduction

This is everything that needs to happen in order to complete a 100% run of Freedom Force.

In order to complete a hundo run, you need to:

- Complete all secondary Objectives
- Find all Experience (Green) and Prestige (Gold) Cannisters
- Kill all (non-respawing) enemies.

Some of these missions might have additional comments, so do pay attention to each level individually.

- frost warrior (7)
- ice queen (8)
- NUCLEAR WINTER (1)

**Additional Comment:** Where a lot of the other levels will show you you've missed an enemy, in this level you do need to pay attention to the final enemy screen. Enemies that don't spawn in, don't get counted towards the maximum, meaning that you could end up being enemies short but the end screen makes it seem like you're not.

## 5a — In the Nick of Time

**Secondary objectives:**

**Green canisters:** 1

- Near Starting Location

**Gold canisters:** 1

## 6 — Prehistoric Panic

- Bottom Right of the map.

**Enemy types:**

- blue darkman (X)
- purple darkman (X)
- SHADOW (1)

**Additional Comment:** Darkmen are an infinite spawn. Because 3 blue darkmen and 1 purple darkman spawn in the final cutscene, these can be "missed" on the final enemy screen (So for example 8/11 and 2/3 would be a succes)

**Additional Comment:** Make sure to pick up the cannisters before beating Shadow, as it will instantly end the level.

## 10a — Looking for Trouble

**Gold canisters:** 1

- On top of a building.

**Enemy types:**

- DEJA VU (Not Displayed)

**Additional Comment:** Déjà vu's clones are an infinite spawn, and because of this, not relevant to 100% completion.

**Additional Comment:** The cloning ray shooting one of your characters and creating a clone is an infinite spawn, and because of this, not relevant to 100% completion.

## 14a — Robots on the Rampage

1. Prevent 10 buildings from being destroyed
2. Prevent 5 buildings from being destroyed

**Green canisters:** 1

- Top right corner, on a building.

**Gold canisters:** 1

**Additional Comment**: Due to the temples, additional sylphs may spawn. So while checking this, we should make sure that not too many additional enemies spawn. There should be at least 6 Green Sylphs, 6 Red Sylphs and 5 Silver Sylphs. The 4 green sylphs at the end of the mission do not count for 100% as they can not be KO'd.

## 20 — Pandemonium

**Secondary objectives:** None

**Green canisters:** 1

- Near the start, next to the first spawning temple.

**Gold canisters:** 1

- Next to the Stone Circle, under a tree.

**Enemy types:**

- green sylph (10)
- red sylph (2)
- silver sylph (3)
- wall carving (6)
- MANBULL (6)
- enchanted EVE (Not Displayed)
- PAN (Not Displayed)

**Additional Comment**: The temple at the start spawns Green Sylphs and the Stone circle at the End Silver Sylphs. So additional enemies might be spawned. Make sure every number on the "enemy" screen is maxxed.

**Secondary objectives:**

1. Don't allow any civilian to be injured

- wild raptor (7)
- tough raptor (8)
- t-rex (2)
- alien warrior (2)
- alien sergeant (2)
- LORD DOMINION (1)

**Additional Comment**: Not all enemies are shown on end screen, so be careful.

**Additional Comment:** Infinite Raptor Spawn, just make sure the final numbers match up. (This means the Raptor, wild raptor and tough raptor numbers might be different)

## 22 — The End of Time

**Comment:**

There are no cannisters to be gotten here and you can only progress to the next disc by killing all the enemies. There are also no secondary objectives, meaning unless cheats happen here, there is very little to pay attention to. Just play as you normally would.

The two things that can break a hundo run here:

All turrets (4) need to be killed on the Microwave disc, as they don't count towards the completion of the disc.

Make sure to kill all of timemaster's lackeys on the final (13th) disc. Because of this, do not break the constraints before Time Master shows up in the fight with his lackeys. Breaking the constraints afterwards does immediately kill the lackeys.
