Data and Analysis: Gourdy’s Average Time on Machines (Tech Savvy, Trinkets, and is he better than Yatta?)

This guide examines the average amount of time it takes to complete machines as Gourdy, and draws conclusions from a thorough test I've conducted. I'll lead off with the results (full data spreadsheet at the bottom):

![](/static/blob/5ngogyke.png)

First off, Circle Machines are obviously completed a bit quicker than Normal Machines. You'd only be partially correct if you said this was because the circle SC (Skill Check) is faster than a "normal machine" SC. If an SC appears close enough to the end of a machine so that hitting gold on the SC will complete the machine, then a circle SC is preferable since the gold on "normal machine" SCs sometimes appears on the right side of the SC bar (which loses about 1 second compared to any circle SC). However, you will not encounter more SCs on circle machines merely because the SCs are completed faster; when any SC appears, another cannot appear for 4 seconds regardless of how quickly it is completed.

It is important to now mention that conclusions made here about Tech Savvy and Trinkets are somewhat Gourdy-specific; not all Toons will have similar results.

Let's start with trinkets. I was shocked to find that MG + PA (Magnifying Glass + Participation Award) was such a minor improvement over just MG—I expected at least 2x the improvement. Looking at the combined average time to complete normal and circle machines, we see that swapping Veemote for PA saves us just 1.9 or 1.7 seconds per machine, depending on if Tech Savvy is obtained. *At face value*, this means that Gourdy needs to complete 11 or 12 machines (on average) on a given floor before PA has saved any time over using Veemote on that floor.

Opting for MG + PA looks worse the deeper we look. Even on later floors where it has the potential to outperform MG + Veemote, it has to also outperform Veemote's *cumulative advantage up to that point* before it's even a choice worth considering. And now for the factor we haven't yet considered—you get to choose which machine you Veemote! When there are 6 twisteds on a floor, you should absolutely expect that (in a solo run) using Veemote on a machine near the middle of the map will save you more time than 2x the average uninterrupted machine completion time. For Gourdy, MG + PA is likely slower in practice than MG + Veemote, even in an indefinitely-long solo run (but at that point, most players opt for a survivability trinket or two).

The verdict is still out for whether Looey, Pebble, etc. can save time (in practice) in an indefinitely-long solo run using MG + PA, but since no one is actually speedrunning at those very high floor counts it hardly matters. You'll sometimes see a player running MG + PA in non-solo runs where they're the designated machine primer, but priming slows down most runs.

*OPTIONAL SIDENOTE:* An important factor that was not considered by this test (because of difficulty testing) is Gourdy's total time spent on a machines that are interrupted by twisteds. Let's imagine Gourdy is spotted exactly 7 seconds after he starts extracting on a machine *every time* he extracts. MG + PA should now be an **even greater** improvement over just MG because, with PA, Gourdy is fairly likely to complete 2 SCs every time he gets on the machine. The trouble is that, in practice, it's unpredictable when you're going to be spotted by twisteds and it usually won't be in *specific chunks of time* where PA has even more of an advantage. I believe a similar idea may explain why, on the left side of the image, circle machines had nearly the same average time as normal machines when Tech Savvy was obtained; if a particular combination of different extraction and skill check values results in SCs generally not appearing right at the end when they can complete a machine, then a slow "normal machine" SC isn't detrimental. I haven't mentioned it yet but if you take a glance at the spreadsheet at the bottom, you'll see that there isn't too much variance in the exact amount of time it takes to complete machines (give or take a few frames of latency), which is because SCs always operate in specific chunks of time; one can only appear at the start of every full second, and then when one does appear there's a 4-second cooldown.

Let's try to avoid more ugly blocks of text as we shift our focus to Tech Savvy. Spoiler: it doesn't save 5 seconds per machine, even if we hit "light gray" on every SC to extract as slowly as possible.

We'll focus just on the left side of the image now (no PA). Here's a guess-estimate of time loss from not getting Tech Savvy in a solo run as Gourdy with MG + Veemote (worst-case-scenario assuming all normal machines):

After Floor 2: +12 seconds

After Floor 4: +12 (+0:24 cumulative)

After Floor 6: +14 (+0:38)

After Floor 8: +16 (+0:54)

After Floor 10: +16 (+1:10)

After Floor 12: +20 (+1:30)

After Floor 14: +20 (+1:50)

After Floor 16: +24 (+2:14)

After Floor 18: +24 (+2:38)

After Floor 20: +26 (+3:04)

After Floor 22: +28 (+3:32)

After Floor 24: +30 (+4:02)

After Floor 26: +32 (+4:34)

After Floor 28: +32 (+5:06)

This doesn’t take into account the fact that spending less time on machines obviously results in getting spotted by twisteds less.  Therefore, these time loss estimates are more accurate for runs that are fortunate enough to have fewer twisted interruptions.  Ultimately, I’d advise against quickly resetting a run with a good pace just because you haven’t obtained Tech Savvy; other RNG factors affect your run to a greater extent.

Since I have nothing more to say about Tech Savvy without repeating previous ideas, it's time to answer...

*What about Yatta?*

**Determining Yatta’s average time-on-machines is incredibly difficult to do in any meaningful way.**  She’s not always getting the same amount of candy throughout a run, and she uses candy in many different ways.

Here's one example.

If we were to obtain data for Yatta like I did for Gourdy, we **could not** just determine the frequency that she gets extraction candy and then, from that extraction-candy-frequency, find some precise value of time to subtract off of her averages.  This is because one extraction candy is often used with other extraction-boosting items (and percentage boosts in Dandy’s World are multiplicative, not additive), so *the true value of one extraction candy is wildly situational.*

Ultimately, I think that Yatta has a clear advantage over Gourdy in the shorter Speedrun Categories (extraction jawbreakers, BoCs, etc.), and that she also stays competitive with Gourdy all the way through the 30 Floors category.  Assuming good usage of candy, there’s no reason why Yatta couldn’t achieve a better time than Gourdy in even these longer categories (without needing significantly-greater-luck than Gourdy).  However, as machine count increases, the value of her stamina and speed items decreases (since, for one thing, you’re less and less likely to run across half of the map without encountering a machine), which probably gives Gourdy the outright advantage if a speedrun went as long as, say, Floor 50+.  But let's not fail to mention that in a highest-floor run, Yatta’s survivability (3 health, 2 stealth, continual output of speed items) is definitely preferable to a slight time-on-machines advantage.

You've probably been wondering about my omission of treadmill machines. Since it's difficult to obtain useful data on them (the amount you can run varies greatly depending on the situation) and since they only constitute a small percentage of machines, I decided to only focus on normal and circle machines. Yatta definitely completes treadmill machines faster on average than Gourdy thanks to all her stamina and speed items.

Even though I've spent hours testing with Gourdy, I prefer running with Yatta because she has more nuance to her play and she's capable of higher highs.

Finally, the data spreadsheet I mentioned at the top:

Event Toon(s)

Hello Everyone,

This new halloween event introduced a new random mechanic that can give you a different kind of buff for your runs.
The mechanic I'm talking about here is the trick or treat door.
The stat effect can vary between a few options and will only be available during the Halloween event.
