Compendium of Tricks for Speedrunning DD

Hey everybody - since ppl often ask me what all the tricks I use do, I figured I would make a guide for it :)

The video can be found here:

Scardycat

What it does?

Progresses the game forward by 1 week, triggering all stress relieve actions, as well as purging of quirks/diseases in the hamlet. Also the stagecoach will have a batch of new recruits and quests to embark on, as well as quest rewards will be rerolled.

How does it work?

Send one hero to the darkest dungeon, after you finished loading, immediately retreat from the mission and return to the hamlet.

What is it useful for?

First of all, it saves us doing a dungeon with a B-Team, while we have to destress/purge diseases on our A-team. Progressing the weeks will in the beginning unlock all the buildings in the hamlet. We also use it to reroll the recruits at the stagecoach, because in some categories (namely Any%, Baron% especially), we want a very specific party combination. We also use it to reroll quest rewards, mainly boss quest rewards, as they always yield a very rare trinket, and we want some of those very rare ones for (again) the Any%/Baron% category.

Runs it is used for: All except: Necro% (and even there sometimes), some Misc categories like Old Road or Necromancer Pre-Release.

Scardyboost

What it does?

Same as Scardycat PLUS it will stack a quest xp buff for the next mission to the whole roster - excluding the person you use to perform the scardyboost.

How does it work?

Same as the scardycat - this time around it HAS to be a level 5 or 6 hero.

What is it useful for?

The actual hidden buff it provides is as stated a +100% quest xp base value stack on the next quest. It is linear, so that means for example:

a short apprentice mission yields 2xp

when you scardyboost 1x it yields 4xp

when you scardyboost 2x it yields 6xp

when you scardyboost 3x it yields 8xp ...

and so on

On radiant difficulty a hero needs 40xp to get from lvl 0 to level 6. So scardyboosting 20 times will then enable that character to level straight up to lvl 6 with one short apprentice mission. On darkest and stygian it is 48xp from level 0 to 6, so 24 scardyboosts will be needed. It is worth mentioning, that the character doing the scardyboost does NOT benefit from the buffs! since he is always entering the DD for boosting all others, he doesnt stack the buff up.

Runs it is used for: Roster%, Caretaker%, Any%

Scardywarp

What it does?

It essentially allows us to bring any hero into any dungeon we want, circumventing any restrictions.

How does it work?

While on the "Embark" screen, when you hit the "Provision" button and the scene starts to transition to the Provision-Screen, quickly click on any other mission you want your party to actually go to.

What is it used for:

  • sending a hero that has completed a quest in the darkest dungeon back in.
  • sending higher level heroes into lower level missions
  • shard mercs going anywhere (with CoM DLC)
  • going into the courtyard boss quests without invitations (with CC DLC)

Runs it is used in: All tier 2 bosses, any%, baron%, miller%, sleeper%, caretaker%

Virtue-Scam

What it does?

When one of your heros gets his resolve checked upon reaching 100 stress, and gets afflicted, you can reroll that roll to have him become virtuos instead!

How does it work?

Since the game rolls most of the checks and dice for the whole turn at the beginning of it, and some of the stuff during the turn - we can abuse this. Resolve checks are rolled when they happen, so AFTER an attack or action gets somebody to have his resolve checked, you quit to the main menu. Upon reentering, the roll will happen again and therefore give you another chance to get the character a virtue.

Trivia: Because it was never meant to be done that way, some funny things can happen when scamming for a virtue. You can (by chance): Skip enemies turns Skip damage from damage over time effects Skip the whole resolve check (because the char this time around didnt get random stress from i.e. a crit attack against another party member)

Protip: You can leave the game even before the animation for affliction/virtue plays. It is easier to determine after the initial roll, because when you come back into the game, it messes with the light shaders. You will see either the light gets tinted red if the reroll is an affliction, or golden for a virtue. That way you know much quicker if you need to reroll a resolve check or not!

Runs it is used in: No specific ones, since it can be useful in almost any category.

Talisman-Dupe

What it does?

It provides us with a 4th Talisman of the Flame for the second quest in the darkest dungeon. These reduce the dmg and stressdmg of a boss attack significantly. Since we dont run any guard hero in our Any% party comp, it would be nice to have a 4th one ;)

How does it work?

Simply equip 2 level 0 heroes with a talisman, send them to the darkest dungeon, retreat - one of the chars dies and when you return to the hamlet youll find a 4th Talisman of the Flame in your inventory. (we assume the game is coded that you always get up to 3 talismans back so you always have 3 to back into DD2. Since one of the two heroes we went in with gets killed off, the game gives us two talismans back, since they are essentially quest items that the game wants us to always have.)

This only works with Talisman of the Flame, All Champion Boss Trophies and the shieldbreaker trinkets from the nightmares.

Runs it is used in: Any%, Caretaker%

FPS-Unlock

What it does?

Unlocking the FPS makes certain combat timings and animations faster, which will save a bunch of time over the course of a whole run!

How does it work?

If you have a NVIDIA graphics card, just go to your desktop NVIDIA Control Panel, find 3D-Settings, there you can set options on a program to program basis. Find Vertical SYNC and disable it - done!

Controller-Skip

What it does?

It allows your party to leave a room, even while scouting is going on!

How does it work?

Have a controller with analog sticks connected to your PC. Move the RIGHT analog stick into the direction you want your party to leave the room.
