Being as close as possible = more damage?

I thought being as close as possible would mean faster times (because at least in my head being closer means getting damage to the boss quicker), but so far every time I try to stay millimeters away from any boss, even with perfect shield placement, I always get a slower time.

So does it not work this way? Or maybe it does and I'm doing it wrong somehow? u.u

This is something that has been on my mind for the past few days. I first got that impression when the previous record of Level 3 had been broken by Galichou by 010 ms. It is a very straightforward level but even being glued to the boss and firing the shield asap with a perfect placement I could not get to that time. I had the impression then that swinging up and down caused more damage to the Boss, however illogical that might sound. After, I tried that and it worked. I dismissed that theory soon afterwards because it sounded crazy and called it luck, but I must reconsider it now. I am thinking of how we can ascertain ourselves of what exactly causes this.

I tried to do a comparison of both our runs of level 20, it's complicated but it is not of much use. Even if I see the hp bar differences at the same timing it does not gives me an explanation. I think the correct move here should be to try and reverse engineer the game by running the apk through something like apktool and see what comes up.

I did use apk tool in an attempt to find the hitboxes for the bosses, but I really don't know how to navigate this. There are lot lot lot of folders with weird names and I'm like <.<

Here's a sample of a random folder and one of the random .java files

I have no idea what to make of this xd

Also kind of related, but for level 20 I found this korean guy who beat all the times currently listed and I was shocked. I don't understand the difference between what he did and us (though I did miss a few shots in the current easy run u.u)

I added him on discord and tried to get him to upload here but he doesn't seem interested... but I learned an interesting fact, I asked him how many attempts it took him and he said: Easy - 4 | Normal - 3 | Hard - 1 | Hell - 29

I found this program called JADX and threw the APK in. Now this seems a lot more readable (though I'm no programmer so I have no idea what to look for). I'll try using the search function and looking into every folder, hopefully I manage to find something useful

update: I have no idea what I'm looking at

I can't even find the files relating to each boss, maybe to see their HP or their hitbox u.u

I haven't tried looking at this yet, will try soon. I took a bunch of programming classes back in day(flunked most of them). Very nice find that korean guy's channel. Tbh he doesn't actually need to upload or create an account to get his records listed. It is allowed for the moderators to upload non-users runs. So if he is up for it, I can list his runs here without him needing to submit them.

I finally tied with the korean guy and beat Galichou

only took like 1000 tries :´^)

Haha, well done for beating me! Have you figured out how to do more damage ?

Sorry in advance for my English, I use Google translate otherwise it would take weeks to write all this ^^

What I call shooting distance is how many shots we see displayed on the screen between the player and the boss. I find it particularly clearly visible with the bee !

So after reading this post, I tried to research and understand so what I am going to say is only a hypothesis but I have the impression that it is confirmed (I found how to do TAS on android so it will allow you to test things and perhaps understand better).

The boss at the beginning does not take damage (for about half a second) which allows you to position yourself well. On the other hand, once in the game, there is a large area in front of the boss or whatever happens our rate of fire is at maximum (I would try to find exactly the size of the area). As long as we are in this area it makes no difference whether we stick the boss or not, the damage will be identical.

On the other hand, there is one thing that saves time, and that is not to move forward/move suddenly. I'm not sure what I'm saying but I think that if we move too suddenly and change the shooting distance between the character and the boss, for example when we are far away, the character shoots jerkily but when we get closer he shoots continuously. Well I think that’s when the difference is made. If we are 6 shots away and we go to 5 too violently, I think that a shot can jump and therefore do less damage.

I hope I have been clear, even if I am not sure, I will try to think more about this thanks to the TAS and to make a much more complete and also clearer explanation!

I think our mod is not used to this DD (Danmaku Death) community being so active ^^

For the moment the TAS is not making much progress because it is a little more difficult than expected!

Haha! Wow we would have 2 mods ? The class :o

Imagine my (pleasant) surprise when I logged in and saw all those notifications.
