Differences between Flash and HTML5 version
2 years ago

Let me just say that I've been a fan of Beavus since 2016, and had no idea that this speedrun community existed. I'm glad there's a place where we can all come together to show our love for this game. That being said, I've noticed some differences between the two versions of this game that I thought were worth sharing. I'm new to the speedrunning community in general, and don't exactly know how this stuff works. Are these differences significant enough that the two versions would need separate categories?

  • The HTML5 version is more zoomed-in to allow for a widescreen aspect ratio, meaning that the camera moves up and down a lot more based on Beavus's position
  • the springs have changed: in the original flash version, the springs took a second to launch Beavus's wood-filled body skyward instead of an instant launch (also, springs are layered in front of Beavus in the HTML5 version for some reason)
  • Beavus falls faster in the HTML5 version
  • the hole you're suppposed to fall into in level 16 in the HTML5 version leaves you facing to the left, while in the flash version it leaves you facing to the right (this is due to the above)
  • the infamous "impossible level 11 skip" is indeed possible on the flash version, not sure why it's different in the HTML5 version
  • beavus's screen-edge warping is handled differently: he must disappear fully before reappearing in the flash version (the HTML5 version has a half-and-half approach instead)
  • the right-to-left spring jump in level 12 is not possible on the flash version due to the above
  • the HTML5 version has a level-select feature that the flash version does not
  • the flash version has a level-reset feature (the ESC key) that the HTML5 version does not
  • the game's end screen in the HTML5 version is far more "complete"

huh. i didn't really know that there was even another version of beavus, let alone that theres a version with the level 11 skip. although i don't think the Flash version saves time overall even with the skip given how many different time losses build up along the route. i do think a seperate leaderboard for the flash version would be healthy!

thanks for this info!

I tried speed running on the HTML5 version a while ago, I was pretty surprised with the level 11 skip but since beavus was just slower over all I figured it wasn't really worth it's own category. Especially since not many people speed run beavus as is. (I know I'm very late lol)
