It can be a slew of things. But whatever it is, seems like a skipped input. So either emulation lag or controller input not being processed properly. If it happens every time in the same spot, I'd suggest trying to do something different in those spots to test whats going on to find a solution.

It COULD be the iBuffalo. I bought the original one years back and it doesn't accept dual inputs well. So like Up+Right it has a hard time with. I heard upgraded versions of the controller fixed this issue though.

Now that the NEScathlon is over, we are back to requiring a reset at the beginning of each run.

If you are new to running NG3 this simply means, if using an emulator, you must reset the game before each run and include that reset in the video submission.

Thank you -t0

Yeah, I say go for it.

My only reservation was for future discoveries based on the clipping. But I fully agree that this is more than fine.

And yes, any% will always include all time saves available as the name implies.

Yeah, it's just something I think needs a little discussion before we set it and forget it. For instance, it could have huge time saves if new spots are found where clipping wasn't previously possible.

Glitches arent something we've had to really think about much in the NG series.

And it's really up to the community. So please do voice your thoughts so we can continue the conversation.

I think it would have to be its own category. But go for it if you think its something you want to do :D

Woah! Thats a heck of a find!

Wanted to follow up on this as I was just informed yesterday by Beerfullofbelly that Scumtron DID actually make a practice rom for NG2 and that it will be available in the resources section!

Unfortunately no. The practice rom for NG1 was created by Scumtron specifically for that community.

We've considered this and may end up going that route. For now, its banned entirely to keep things simple.

The problem with different versions is that we have to make sure of the version each and every verification that uses Mesen. This can lead to runs being denied for not showing the version# by mistake and that's not something we want.

We are doing our best as mods to keep things fair among all players. And unfortunately until we fully understand the 'new' Run Ahead feature and how it could be abused without detection, we decided for now, it is best to put a ban on those emulators.

Illinois, USAtwin0mega3 years ago

In order to keep things congruent between the three NG NES titles, we are implementing a global Mesen ban for now.

"Hi,

The mod team have decided to ban the emulator Mesen because of a potential run ahead feature, listed here: https://www.mesen.ca/docs/configuration/emulation.html. "Run ahead allows the reduction of input lag by the number of frames specified. CPU requirements increase proportionally with the number of run ahead frames specified."

We've noticed other boards for speedgames ban it too and we'd like to implement a ban across all NES ninja gaidens as well.

All currently submitted runs done with Mesen will be approved, but future submissions will be rejected"

With the significant increase in NG runners over the past several months, I wanted to give a friendly reminder to head on over to the NG Discord. Feel free to invite any ninjas or ninja's in training you may know as well!

It's a fun-loving community full of advice and encouragement! Plus, it's the ONLY place where talking to ninjas about ninja stuff is acceptable...

...But I'd recommend staying away from the guy in the red and black outfit. He's rude, smells like chimichangas, and isn't even a real ninja >.>

Hope to see you there!

From my understanding, the CV Anniversary Collection uses the PRG-0 version of the game, which will crash the game on sprite overlaps, which is why the PRG-1 is the preferred version to run the game with.

So the best way to run the game would be via console (preferable) and emulation...not the Anniversary Collection or the NES Classic (which is emulation as well).

Are there any differences between the ports though? PC vs Switch vs PS4?

If I am wrong, please correct me. I'm certainly not a CV expert :)

Here is literally everything I bought when getting started. A lot has since changed and been updated, but you can see the GV-USB2 and the cords under it are what was also needed.

Obviously you don't need to buy all that stuff to get started. Just buy the essentials, a GV-USB2, cords, and microphone and you're good to go. If you don't already have a microphone, I'd recommend the Blue Snowball. It's fairly cheap and sounds pretty clear.

If you can get it working properly, please let me know and I'll add it to the resources, with your permission of course.

It would be really nice to have for those using emulators :)

It is important that you record and submit your videos with a 4:3 or "Pixel Perfect" screen ratio.

Stretched screens either with HDMI widescreen or emulation make it harder for the mods to determine if a run is running at accurate FPS (frames per second).

Stretched screens, even by small proportions, make games appear to be running at a faster FPS than they are. Likewise, a squished screen makes it look slower. As mods, we can manually try to correct this when verifying, but its extra work and will not always guarantee we get the ratio corrected.

If we are unable to determine the correct FPS, your runs will be denied.

You can directly change this on your TV or Screen, or within the emulator you're using. And if you absolutely must play with a stretched screen, you can even fix it in OBS by altering the aspect ratio of the video.

Thank you, -Twin

Mesen can be finicky. I use Bizhawk for that very reason.

Im posting this here in case there is anyone unsure of why there are 2 seperate versions of the rom and not sure which to choose. As far as I know, either of the roms are completely acceptable to use for speedrunning the game and submitting to SRC.

First off, I am part of the team that made the romhack. Originally when we released the game, the menu defaulted to Merc mode (hard mode) because we felt that players would 1st play Mercy, then Merc, and then settle on playing Merc mode from there on out.

However, since everyone has been running Mercy mode, we decided to release an "updated patch" that swaps the menu to Mercy mode (easy mode) as default.

The entire point of the updated version of the game is a simple quality of life improvement so runners no longer need to go through the menu each time. They can simply pick the "version" they want to run and start the game. The ONLY difference between the roms is a menu swap, which isn't even included in the timing.

Hey all, this may seem like a silly question, but what is the proper way to frame count a run?

Let me throw out an arbitrary number: 38075 frames

What is the most accurate way to determine that time down to milliseconds?

Thanks
