tl;dr: I'm stepping down as mod, but I'm the only "active" mod.
Anyone want to replace me? Must speak some English.
Here's the quick and dirty: Dreadout is a fun game with a lot of personality. Despite that, not a lot of people run this game. It doesn't help that the starting community didn't flesh out the rules very well (myself included in that, even though I came in a year later it was the first game I moderated).
Two years later, veteran speedrunner Starwin came along and proposed some changes to help gain attention for the game, and this is a thread to collect his ideas and flesh them out in their own thread.
Changes already made:
- 100% categories now under Misc.
- Removed "full game" from existing category titles.
Proposed ideas/changes (aka "To Do List"):
-
Determine if category changes are necessary. -- It was known for a while that there are actually THREE endings (two good, one bad), and it was later discovered there's a set trigger to decide which good ending the player gets (which is whether Ira's neck is snapped or not). This has led to complications with existing categories and start/stop times. -- Starwin suggested categories for Bad/Good/True endings. I'm also in favor of this.
-
Determine a concrete timing for stop/start times. -- Current timing rules is that the timer starts upon save name confirmation and ends at the start of the credits.
-
Rewrite rules to remove confusion from new runners.
-
Retime/recategorize existing runs after any category changes.
I should note here that I'm not the sole person to decide what is changed, but rather the person who will implement and enforce them. My role here is to do what the community wants.
Personally, I'm excited. I know Starwin's reputation as a runner (and from the fighting game community) and I'm looking forward to seeing what other parts of the game get broken wide open. I can probably check with a few other horror game runners I know or follow and see if they'd be interested running in the game. I'm half inclined to buy them a copy if they don't have it already.
Anywho, let's get to discussing. I'll also look into reaching out to previous runners and see if we can get their input.
So update 1.07 dropped today for PC.
A few balance bits and bobs and bugfixes happened, but the biggest change for speedrunning is the Head Ghost trigger was changed. Now it's triggered by standing in one area for too long.
I've yet to test this, but I'm not sure if the 100% trigger chance in the hall before placing the metal talisman even still happens. If it doesn't, it'll fundamentally change the way the 100% Ghosts run is performed, possibly making times on any previous versions (and PS4, which is as of yet unpatched) obsolete or having to be relegated to a separate category.
On the bright side, it'll make hell modes a lot easier. I can't tell you how many times I've gotten screwed when she randomly shows up.
Been running this lately. It's a lot of fun. Basically just gotta get all 20 ghosts to appear before you beat the game.
Easiest difficulty this is possible on is hard. I've had a lot of trouble going through this without dying (DDR Ghost is a pain) but once it's done reliably w/o dying it can use IGT.
So I've been thinking about categories for this game.
Right off the bat, there needs to be a NG and NG+ because once you beat the game on Normal it introduces Ji-Min into the game with her mandatory introduction the first time you go into the hallway on the second floor of Main Building 1.
After that, I don't think we should categorize by difficulty and ending, otherwise we'll end up with 35 NG categories and 45 NG+ categories for a total of 80 freakin' categories, which would SUCK.
I'm also toying with a 100% Ghosts Hard run. That should be a lot of fun, and I'm considering submitting that to GDQ since there's a lot of cool ghosts in the game.
Hi, everyone!
Just a quick update: I've updated the titles of the different categories to a much shorter format. This should make runs for streamers a lot more aesthetically pleasing, as you won't have to have an obscenely long title in your category headers for your split timers!
This change is merely cosmetic and should not affect any existing runs in any form (unless you use LiveSplit, in which you may have to update your headers).
So I just got into speedrunning this game, but I accidentally found a glitch in Act 00. I'm working on seeing if I can get it to happen again, but if this can be duplicated (especially in other sections of the game) it could lead to a lot of fun stuff!
Hi!
I submitted a run for Akiba's Trip 2 about a week ago and have yet to hear back from anyone. Anybody still around?
Thanks in advance!
