Okay, so imagine my surprise when I went to go re-verify the runs to separate True and Good runs and I was the only one who had a True ending. The rest were now classified as Good (Ira Dies).

Anyone want a free WR, go derust and beat my time. Just make sure Ira lives for the True ending!

Please, somebody beat this run. This is an accidental WR after recategorizing due to a new ruleset. ^^;

Trying to teach someone about speedrunning this game rekindled my interest in it, and I realized the ruleset is REALLY confusing.

So I added the following to clarify:

"Timer starts when profile name is confirmed and ends at the end of the post-credits scene."

I also added Vynnada as a moderator, as she's expressed interest in running the game.

One of my to-do items is to create three categories for the game, Bad/Good/True and recategorize runs as needed.

tl;dr: I'm stepping down as mod, but I'm the only "active" mod.

Anyone want to replace me? Must speak some English.

That is some very impressive detective work by gravest0rm, and I'd also like to thank Heartlessedly for revitalizing interest in the game, especially my own.

This was the first game I'd ever done a speedrun for, and I only did it because I was streaming it on Twitch and my viewers suggested I do so. I already had the mod installed at the time and wouldn't have thought for a second that it gave me an advantage, so I submitted the run. When I'd gotten a notification that my run had been beaten a year after I'd submitted it I'd already uninstalled the game (and Akiba Interceptor), and when I tried again it would have been off of a fresh install. I quickly stopped trying and gave up on the game in frustration after I couldn't even beat my own times, and this makes perfect sense now as to why I couldn't -- no mod = crappy times. I'd completely forgotten Akiba Interceptor was a thing, and only just now remembered it when I read the installation guide for it online after reading this thread. It's so goofy that the devs would time things like button presses and menu speeds to FPS, but in hindsight this makes a lot of sense to me now.

I do want to apologize, I wouldn't have submitted the run had I thought for a second that it was invalid. I agree about invalidating runs using 60FPS and have already removed my run.

Either way, it's time to get back in there and start killing my forearms again.

Yeah, after 1.07 I haven't been checking for the floating head ghost since there doesn't seem to be a reliable method of spawning her other than waiting around in the 3rd building, which is just boring. I just check for the other ghosts when checking compliance.

I probably should have made that clearer sooner, sorry about that.

edit: I've revised the ruleset for the run, which is now worded as follows:

"Must view all twenty ghosts in one playthrough, excluding the Floating Head ghost and Art Room poltergeist. Time based on IGT shown after ending. No deaths allowed. NG+ here refers to a save file that has encountered Ji-Min (unlocked by clearing Normal or Above)."

I was thinking about something in bed earlier. If we do differentiate between Good and True endings, I'd like to require proof of ending. There's two ways of verifying the ending that I know of:

  1. The obvious one would be checking to see if Ira gets her neck snapped or not, as this is the trigger between the good/true endings.
  2. The ending itself. IIRC the true ending is slightly longer, but the biggest difference is that Linda is listening to a voicemail from Ira and there's a quick scene that shows that Linda had been listening to the voicemail about 2000 times. Even if the stop timer is changed to when the player loses control of Linda, it'd be really beneficial to moderators to show enough of the ending in the run to show that the intended ending was gotten.

Here's the quick and dirty: Dreadout is a fun game with a lot of personality. Despite that, not a lot of people run this game. It doesn't help that the starting community didn't flesh out the rules very well (myself included in that, even though I came in a year later it was the first game I moderated).

Two years later, veteran speedrunner Starwin came along and proposed some changes to help gain attention for the game, and this is a thread to collect his ideas and flesh them out in their own thread.

Changes already made:

  • 100% categories now under Misc.
  • Removed "full game" from existing category titles.

Proposed ideas/changes (aka "To Do List"):

  1. Determine if category changes are necessary. -- It was known for a while that there are actually THREE endings (two good, one bad), and it was later discovered there's a set trigger to decide which good ending the player gets (which is whether Ira's neck is snapped or not). This has led to complications with existing categories and start/stop times. -- Starwin suggested categories for Bad/Good/True endings. I'm also in favor of this.

  2. Determine a concrete timing for stop/start times. -- Current timing rules is that the timer starts upon save name confirmation and ends at the start of the credits.

  3. Rewrite rules to remove confusion from new runners.

  4. Retime/recategorize existing runs after any category changes.

I should note here that I'm not the sole person to decide what is changed, but rather the person who will implement and enforce them. My role here is to do what the community wants.

Personally, I'm excited. I know Starwin's reputation as a runner (and from the fighting game community) and I'm looking forward to seeing what other parts of the game get broken wide open. I can probably check with a few other horror game runners I know or follow and see if they'd be interested running in the game. I'm half inclined to buy them a copy if they don't have it already.

Anywho, let's get to discussing. I'll also look into reaching out to previous runners and see if we can get their input.

Fair point. I moved the 100% categories to misc.

There's lots of stuff that needs changed, and I'm entirely open to rebuilding this one from the ground up. I feel like it needs its own thread though, so since I can't rename this one I'm going to lock this one and open a new one.

At the time I took over the game, it was necessary to have those categories. Since it isn't necessary any more, I've just changed the category names.

(Also, welcome!)

Right now, the timer starts when you confirm the file name and ends when the credits start.

The reason for this is that there are actually THREE endings, and two are considered good/true endings. Iirc one of them is longer. If Ira's neck gets snapped, you get the shorter ending. If she survives you get the longer ending (the voicemail ending). Since a player's choice affects the length of the good ending, the extra length of that ending has to be considered, which is why it is currently timed and stops when the credits start.

I'm open to suggestions, but the way I see it we have three options here. We have to:

  1. Agree to a standard "True" ending and end the run when you lose control of Linda.
  2. Add new any% and 100% categories and considering the non-voicemail ending a "Good" ending, the voicemail ending the "True" ending and ending the run when you lose control of Linda or
  3. Keep things as they are.

AFAIK, disabling movies doesn't really affect any of the timing of the game. As for the character slider, it's probably best to leave it at default.

konu: DreadOut
Wisconsin, USARabidDuckie6 years ago

Yeah, there's definitely consistency issues. I'm considering addressing it and re-timing videos to a standard.

Feel free to use my run as an example in the meantime.

Wisconsin, USARabidDuckie6 years ago

Just tested it. There was a guaranteed spawn after the cutscene where you spawn in the room with the lighter (she was in the hallway immediately after) but she doesn't appear there any more. The run will have to be altered to account for that, and I don't think that update has reached PS4 yet.

I didn't test how long you have to wait in one spot, though. It may be possible to get her around the same time as the toilet ghost, I just need to time how long it takes to spawn her.

Wisconsin, USARabidDuckie6 years ago

So update 1.07 dropped today for PC.

A few balance bits and bobs and bugfixes happened, but the biggest change for speedrunning is the Head Ghost trigger was changed. Now it's triggered by standing in one area for too long.

I've yet to test this, but I'm not sure if the 100% trigger chance in the hall before placing the metal talisman even still happens. If it doesn't, it'll fundamentally change the way the 100% Ghosts run is performed, possibly making times on any previous versions (and PS4, which is as of yet unpatched) obsolete or having to be relegated to a separate category.

On the bright side, it'll make hell modes a lot easier. I can't tell you how many times I've gotten screwed when she randomly shows up.

For those wanting to run both NG and NG+, disable Steam's auto-backup of save files for the game.

Then make a backup of the files in C:\Users(name)\AppData\LocalLow\SONNORI\White Day_a labyrinth named school

Should be a bunch of .wdf files. I just made folders right in there called NG and NG+ so I could store my NG profile with the settings set how I like.

This way you should be able to run NG and NG+ categories.

Wisconsin, USARabidDuckie7 years ago

Been running this lately. It's a lot of fun. Basically just gotta get all 20 ghosts to appear before you beat the game.

Easiest difficulty this is possible on is hard. I've had a lot of trouble going through this without dying (DDR Ghost is a pain) but once it's done reliably w/o dying it can use IGT.

Wisconsin, USARabidDuckie7 years ago

Oh, and one more thought: since they have such different stories, should we separate Hee-Min and Ji-Min into different categories? Otherwise most runs will end up being her campaign since it's a lot shorter.

Wisconsin, USARabidDuckie7 years ago

So I've been thinking about categories for this game.

Right off the bat, there needs to be a NG and NG+ because once you beat the game on Normal it introduces Ji-Min into the game with her mandatory introduction the first time you go into the hallway on the second floor of Main Building 1.

After that, I don't think we should categorize by difficulty and ending, otherwise we'll end up with 35 NG categories and 45 NG+ categories for a total of 80 freakin' categories, which would SUCK.

I'm also toying with a 100% Ghosts Hard run. That should be a lot of fun, and I'm considering submitting that to GDQ since there's a lot of cool ghosts in the game.
