The developer of Mesen has implemented a "run-ahead" lag reduction feature on the emulator, which unfortunately leaves us no choice but to remove the emulator from our allowed list effective immediately.
Runs already approved will not be removed. Any future submissions will be rejected and there are no pending runs in the queue.
https://www.mesen.ca/docs/configuration/emulation.html will show you this section:
Run Ahead: Run ahead allows the reduction of input lag by the number of frames specified. CPU requirements increase proportionally with the number of run ahead frames specified.
Run ahead is currently not compatible with movies or netplay - the movies and netplay menus will be disabled if runahead is turned on. Note for speedrunners: Using features such as run ahead to reduce lag typically counts as cheating for the purposes of speed running.

@KilleDragon you're forbidden to post ROM links on this website. Those are the rules for all of speedrun.com and you could potentially be banned if you continue to do so. Fair warning.
If the buttons are mushy, then it's likely the rubbers are worn out or broken and they are pretty easily replaced. You can open it up at least with the intent of cleaning it and then examine the rubbers.
We've discussed this topic and have agreed that this category is intended to be done with a NES original or dogbone controller. Being able to remap keys on a keyboard to a more comfortable position defeats the challenge and intent of this category. It's supposed to be very difficult and challenging.
The rules did specifically state "controller" and not "keyboard" but I've added an extra line to make that more clear that you must use an original or dogbone style of NES controller for this category.
Okay, so I have pruned down this thread a bit.
I don't believe that this is a troll request. A category such as this would belong in the Category Extensions board, not this one. That being said, we have requests for new categories suspended indefinitely.
As far as the category itself, I don't honestly hate the idea and it would be cool to see Luigi stuff, but I don't think there's enough there to warrant making a category for it unfortunately.
For the rest of you. If you don't have something beneficial to say, I ask that you refrain from posting replies. That includes ordering the mods to close the thread. Attacking the OP is not what I'd consider beneficial. You don't have to like someone's idea and you can disagree with it. It doesn't give you the right to start flame wars. I will start cracking down on that more going forward as it presents a poor image of the community as a whole.
@sam1370 I feel like the part where it talks about the RetroArch run being faster than a run with better execution was ignored based on your response.
That's the issue. It's not the reduction in input lag by itself. If you can get a better time over console with worse execution, that's a problem. That's a big problem.
Asking people to change settings that aren't the default and to provide proof is also an issue. It's difficult enough to get people just to read the rules period, let alone ask them to do something that adds complexity.
I just don't think there's a reasonable way to accommodate RetroArch at this time.
RetroArch isn't allowed because it has been shown to have the potential for a performance gain over that of the NES console and standalone emulators. So the focus isn't so much about "cheating" per se, but it's more about an unfair performance gain whether it be intentional or not.
If you'd like to read into an example, you can peruse this thread: https://www.speedrun.com/dt2/thread/fx85w
We do need to rewrite the rules to clarify that it's not allowed, we just need to figure out how to phrase that to keep people from trying to poke holes in the rules. We post a whitelist of accepted platforms, meaning if it's not on the whitelist, it's not permitted.
We would have to implement special rules for something like that. We would have to require all players have an input display and that they record at 60FPS which is not reasonable for everyone.
Also, no, sorry.
If you want to have your idea considered, I'd propose the idea in the unofficial discord/leaderboard. Maybe suggest it with a completed run as well. Posting it here while we aren't accepting new categories isn't going to provide much benefit. It will likely be lost within the realm of dead threads as time goes on.
The game appears to run normally from a quick test I did, so I think it should be fine.
Do I really have to delete or lock yet another thread?
@wrboismbs Make a Google Doc, or Wiki site or something and you can have your own leaderboard for this category. We may consider this category in the future and we may not. Feel free to post your leaderboard in this thread: https://www.speedrun.com/smbce/thread/tiu18 . I imagine it will be an extended period of time before we consider additional categories again.
@KilleDragon I've debated calling you out for a while, so I've decided to do it. What is your purpose for being here? You make a lot of noise for someone who seemingly does not run the game. You have no runs submitted and you have no data suggesting you even run this game. You're free to have your own opinions, but to be honest with you, I don't take a lot of what you say into consideration anymore. You seem to object to most of the things the mods comment on or decide and you ignore us when we try to explain things to you and just continue going around being sassy. You also go and click the like button on most everyone's comments. I'm tired of it.
That being said, if I'm completely wrong about all that, go ahead and correct me. By all means. This is perception I have based on your actions.
@Esthetic1999 Okay, so, this account was created 4 hours ago and has only posted in this specific thread in favor of OP....4 hours ago. Now, I'm not the brightest man on earth, but I'm not the dumbest either. Is someone fabricating false support? Hmm. Interesting.....
I was going to write a long in response to this, but I don't have it in me right now. Maybe later, maybe not, but I'll still make a short response.
I disagree with a lot of your statements here. SMB1 and SM64 are two very different games. They don't attract a lot of the same people to run both. It's usually one or the other and not both. Sure, there are some people who do both, but you don't find a lot of those. I would expand this to be more along the lines of 2D Mario vs. 3D Mario and not just SMB1 vs. SM64. For me personally, I've never had much interest in running any of the 3D Mario games. I will watch it sometimes, but it doesn't appeal to me as a speedrun that I'd want to learn.
SMB1 is the 11th most active game on the entire site right now (SM64 is 3rd), which suggests to me that it's still popular.
