There used to be a way to sort by country, most runs submitted, and most games played, but the page is currently down.
In this run, I performed a weird glitch that gives you a double jump. I've managed to replicate it several times, it involves jumping into a corner and jumping again. It doesn't save any time, it's the exact same as doing one bonk. So, is it allowed?
check the rules for whatever game you want to run. most of them have a list of allowed emulators there.
If you can't figure out what to do, you could just make a spreadsheet for the leaderboard. That way, you can manually place runs where they belong. You could have a column for #items and time, and it would function like normal.
In sml2, there is a low% category. What they do i s they add a time penalty for collecting coins, and that way the lowest % completion takes priority, and then time.
Only site mods can ban players from the website, but that's way too severe a punishment for just faking a speedrun. If you want to ban a player from the community, just reject all of their runs, and don't accept any runs they submit in the future.
You don't have to get top times to have fun speedrunning, but I understand not wanting to submit runs you aren't proud of. My biggest advice is to just find games you like to play casually, and try to speedrun them. If it's fun, continue learning or reach out to other runners. Another thing you could do is go to runner's profiles and see what games they run, and learn any that look interesting to you (but then there's no gurantee that you'll like those games).
"Many games ask that runners finish their attempt session before submitting runs." Maybe I just am misremembering, or someone inside of my community said that.
I feel like this discussion is getting off topic and heated, so this will be my last post. I understand that people care about progression, and runs have been reverified after they have been rejected before. I also have spent a lot of time setting up and verifying runs for the main leaderboard and category extensions. And no, we don't need new mods. Every single submission has been verified or rejected within 3 days for this game.
Finally, I don't think you can judge someone's character based on whether or not they reject runs for being obsolete. None of the mods are incompetent, lazy, or "arses" just because we reject the run.
I was not aware of that part of the moderation rules, It's been almost a year since I read through them
I have a life outside of this website. I don't just sit at my pc all day long. I'm willing to verify runs, as I said, but each run can take a while to verify, so verifying a bunch of old, obsolete runs is annoying. Again, if the person cares about progression, I'll verify it. The point of my above post was just to offer a different viewpoint, since everyone in the replies seems to think that the mod who rejected @Hollywood 's run made a mistake.
Also, there's a big difference between sitting down for an hour and verifying a bunch of runs and doing it a few minutes at a time over a while.
Many games ask that runners finish their attempt session before submitting runs.
Finally, game has 6 mods. We don't need to add more.
In a game I moderate, new runners will often submit several runs at the same time, which can be very annoying, especially if there are other runs in the queue. They'll do their first ever run, submit, and then do attempts, pb, submit, pb, submit, and repeat that several times over the course of an hour or so. Most of these runs I reject for being obsolete, because us mods have other things to do. I understand that some people care about progression though. If it does bother you and you really want the runs on your profile, just message the mod who rejected the run and ask for it to be verified.
Different games have different rules. It varies.
Can a mod please lock this thread
@OATS stop replying. If you just stop then the argument will end. @Neutrino you too
Most threads are not like this at all. Most speedrunners and communities are very nice and welcoming. This thread just derailed and two people got in an argument.
In a game called Grey-Box Testing, the speedrun is just under 1 minute long. Most of it is just walking, so optimized movement is really the only way to save time. The world record used to be a high 56 second time by @Mimoz , and a 55 second time was considered impossible. One day, A runner who stopped running the game decided to improve their 58 second pb, and got a low 56 second time. Suddenly, 55 was kinda close to happening. Later that same day, they got a 55.310, which was a 1 second improvement in an already very optimized game. They did a strat at the ending which was so hard that nobody else has managed to replicate it. Still to this day, nobody has gotten a legitimate time within a second of his run. https://www.speedrun.com/gbt/run/yv6nrk4z
In a game called Demon Castle, the world record stood at 2:31, and there was no timesave left in the run (only 2 frames could be saved by doing a frame perfect jump in the final level, and better movement could save a few fractions of a second). A 2:30 seemed impossible until a new route was found that saved 2 seconds. After @xatrixx , and myself both got low 2:29s, we thought a 2:28 was maybe possible, but then a faster quick kill for the first boss was found, and a new way to save 1 cycle in a room with moving platforms was found. xatrixx got a 2:27 this way. If another newly found quick kill was used in the third level, a 2:26 might be possible with perfect play, but nobody is willing to grind for it. https://www.speedrun.com/demon_castle/run/mr93jd8m
In a game called Mobility!, a sub 7 minute time was considered impossible. A time of 7:14 was estimated to be the theoretical limit. However, when one of the retired runners returned, they discovered a plethora of new strategies and the community started to be more active than ever before. Now, with more motivation to grind and lots of easy timesave, the time was taken to a 6:53 by me. Now, the world record is a 6:44, and a sub 6:40 is imminent. https://www.speedrun.com/mobility/run/zpll44gm
You can add the abbreviation of a country in brackets to disassociate a name from an account. I did this to myself for one of my runs before because I didn't want it on my profile. Instead of entering Merl_ as my name, I entered [us]Merl_ https://www.speedrun.com/gbt/run/y8rgw11m
