Will American power/audio+visual cables work on a JAP N64 console? It was much, MUCH cheaper for me to order a Japanese 64 WITHOUT cables (it was literally gonna add $60 just to get a console with hookup cables as opposed to without...wth is up with that?!), so I have the system en route, but now need to pick up the cables. Can I just go down to my local retro game store and pick up US cables and be good to go? I know everything else US will work (Gameshark, Expansion Pack, etc etc), so I dont see why this wouldn't be the same kinda deal.
I play quite a few other PS1 games (as in other than RE2) on my SCPH 70012, which contains a 1.11 driver, and honestly can't notice a difference between playing on it and playing on my cousin's slim PS2 on fds (not a 1.11). I guess it must just be a Resident Evil thing, although I actually think it may come down to even more than just the 1.11 driver or something, because I don't feel like my load times are so much better than non-1.11's that it merits creating an entire leaderboard for it.
My basis for this is that I'm gearing up to submit my first run, and my runs are about identical mistake and overall run-wise to some of the dudes in Top 5, however I'm still putting up similar times, not times that are so Godlike the Japanese couldn't compete with them. Hence I think it may be that some 1.11's really are just special, like how everyone thought Trevor Seguin's runs were unbeatable bc of the PS2 he used? Yes I believe that is the case, but it has to be more than just the fact it's a 1.11. Bc as I'm saying, I have one and can tell you personally I don't see it loading any faster than any other PS2 on FDS. I still maintain that this issue didn't justify creating an entirely seperate leaderboard, seeing as how the Japanese players can import a 1.11, the same as we've basically been made to import Japanese copies of the game haha. And then the point was made, "Well then the Japanese would have to mod the 1.11's to play JAP RE2 on the 1.11's, and they dont believe that's ethical bc then it's a 'tampered with console'"...and so basically they'd be importing a faster system, but just to run a slower version of the game. I get how that may seem counter-intuitive at first, however Darazanjoll informed me that as far as we know at this point, a perfect run on US RE2 on a 1.11 will be unbeatable for a perfect JAP RE2 run on a Driver x.xx...so quite literally the fastest times possible WITHOUT modding a console would be on US RE2 on a 1.11 driver. So if we really are trying to put up the fastest times we should all be using 1.11's and US RE2, bc despite being the slightly slower version the 1.11 makes up for it and then some lol.
I understand I'm in the minority thinking that way, and nothing will change now that the Japanese have essentially decided this issue for us, but it's just something to think about. I dont care either way, Im just slightly annoyed that to have my times on the leaderboard everyone else is on Im kinda forced to order a much slower Japanese console when I already invested in the 1.11 bc its the fastest :/ we are speedrunning, after all. Lol
Sorry for the total nub question, but isn't all you're doing for every form of blj in the entire game mashing as fast as possible? There isn't any scenario where you can mash too FAST, is there? I guess I'm asking if I mash as fast as possible during every blj execution they should all be successful, correct?
I do a technique me and my Street Fighter buddies used to call "hyper-bagging" (bc when we knocked the other character down we'd teabag over them at hyperspeeds hahaha). You kind of use your other fingers to anchor your hand to the back of the controller and this allows you to just mash X/A/whatever ridiculously fast with your thumb. It works as long as no specific rhythm is needed and you just need to go as fast as possible. It's hard to explain in words so you can envision it in your mind but yea, that's what I do. The anchoring of the hand is something I learned in guitar/and bass to allow intricate, precise movements without tiring out the hand/arm.
Also, will an American GS and Exp. Pack work with a Japanese SM64?
Yea 7hornet someone on the Discord suggested an Everdrive also, but it's a bit out of my price range right now. On a budget unfortunately :/ lol
Oh okay, ty Xein.
Also, can you guys suggest the best codes to practice with? I don't currently know what all is possible utilizing a GS. I don't need the actual codes, I'm just asking for their names/functions, if that makes sense lol. Obviously Infinite Lives will help at first, but beyond that Idk what to look up.
Whoa a Gameshark can let you use savestates and have a timer without being on a pc?! That's friggin insane lol. How does having an Exp. Pack enable it to do those things? Just requires more memory to do so or what?
I've heard mentioned by some good runners and online that a Gameshark is great for practicing/learning this game, and would prove beneficial. Can anyone point me in the right direction as far as what model of GS, as well as tell me what exactly it can assist with? Thanks in advance.
Awesome, good news all around then! And yea I'm not trying to be intentionally difficult or anything, it's just I have a Japanese 64 due to running SM64, and I don't quite have the funds to buy an American 64 just to play US Turok 2. So I checked and there's a Japanese version, it just goes by the name "Violence Killer" (absolute lol at that name). I found a copy on ebay and from all I've read the only changes are voice acting and cosmetics (ie. Different shotgun icon, maybe some other small things).
But great, thanks for the timely response DvD!
In scarcely any game that actually has a competitive community is webcam stuff allowed. I can't think of one other game I run that accepts anything less than a capped video. It's just the way things are. I don't fully agree with it either but we're in the minority. We just have to accept what the greater community wants and play by the rules.
Hey gang, I have a few questions for this title. Firstly, is the Japanese version (Violence Killer: Turok Generations) allowed for submissions? Its essentially the same game except it has Japanese voices and a few different weapon icons I believe.
Secondly, does using the expansion pack effect times at all? Slower? Faster? Any input is appreciated.
I'm so sad I went out of my way to hunt down a 1.11 only to just have my times end up on an "alt" leaderboard :( lol
But okay, will remember to show the PS Driver screen. Thanks for the input.
Dara, another quick question on this subject, would I still submit a Top 3 run into the 1.11 category even if I'm running the US version on an UNmodded PS2? It's still original hardware, and I'm running a slower version of the game, so wouldn't it be feasible to then allow my runs on the "everybody else" leaderboard? I would think the benefits of me having a 1.11 would be balanced by the fact I'm running the slower version of the game.
Thanks for the input guys. Now, my other question, how do I distinguish between the 2 cartridge covers? Seeing as how they're in Japanese...which pic is on the original I guess I'm asking.
And FIXED blj's?! They were never broken to begin with, amirite? ;D
Hey gang, I was looking into picking up the Japanese version of SM64, and came across info on a rereleased version called "Super Mario 64 Shindō Pak Taiō Version", that apparently adds rumble feature and English voice acting. Would it be better to obtain the original Japanese version? I take it to mean the English voice acting may include Peach's opening letter read, which we all know only serves to slow gameplay down lol.
Anyone have any info? And know how to distinguish between the original version and this other one?
Is there a way I can look up my ebay buys and post the link? I have no problem showing you, but I can say the original ad didn't tell me it had a 1.11 in it, only that it was a SCPH-70012, which I assumed had a 1.11 bc in Carci's 1:08:xx WR it says he used a 70012. Is it possible some 70012's dont come with 1.11 and I just lucked out?
And I understand the logic behind the seperation on the leaderboards, hope i didn't come across as argumentative. I just didn't know the Japanese players don't have a model that comes with 1.11. So I guess at the very least I can submit a Leon A run on my 1.11 and it'll make second place on that leaderboard lol
I only got into speedrunning a few months ago, and all I had to do was ebay search for an SCPH 70012 and I immediately found one for $35 lol. These feature a 1.11. It sounds like nobody bothered to look as opposed to they're hard to find lol.
But yea I guess if the Japanese players feel they're handicapped then its fine, although we have to go out of our way to find import copies and systems too sooo....lol.
K, so I have a question, in the PS leaderboard there's seperate tabs for x.xx and 1.11, what's that all about? Is that the version of PS Driver used? I think its kinda silly to seperate all 1.11 versions, it makes them seem less important.
