Welcome aboard! You're never too old to run buddy, no need to pass the sticks yet. Rare video game figures eh? I'd like to hear more about that.

Welcome! OBS takes some tinkering, but I promise it isn't too bad. Good luck on the Mirror's edge runs.

Hey @8bitoffun sorry about your negative experience, as a nuetral 3rd party, I'll give you my take based on what you mentioned. Do keep in mind that there are (at least) two sides to every story so I won't be condemning anybody since I wasn't there to see anything myself.

  1. I went ahead and checked out the leaderboards, and it looks like there are currently only two runners (Yourself and the aforementioned SuperMod) so while I agree with you, rules need to be set in place, the boards are fresh and as such will take time, teamwork and cooperation to create a set of rules that are clearly stated and easy to interpret. While I don't know the ins and outs of that game, some common run types (which are in place in many games because of the ease of explanation) are Any%(allowing any means necessary to reach the end game), No Major Glitches/Glitchless(depending on the game allowing some minor/no glitches to reach the end game) and 100% (beat the game in it's entirety). I see the game currently has two active runners with three submitted runs and ~a dozen different categories. You can see why this may get confusing for anybody even interested in learning the game, so it may be advisable to cut back the categories into easier to digest rules until the game grows big enough to support a dozen different categories. Any% is anything goes, glitchless means no glitches and 100% can even be separted into glitchless and glitches allowed.

  2. I welcome anybody from SRC to my stream so I can enjoy their company, but I tend to agree that showing up to criticize my run would get under my skin. I would also suggest the two of you settle for less categories (as stated above) with more concise rules (letting Any% be exactly that, no limitations on usable strategies and glitchess being just that) or something to that effect. Also note, when you start and end you timer doesn't matter because the mod should ALWAYS be re-timing the run from the acceptable start and stop times to maintain accurate leaderboards. You don't even need a timer to run a game, although it certainly helps.

  3. If the game has a community, then the community should be driving the game if everything is being done correctly. The MOD (yourself included as a MOD of the game) is nothing more than the implementer of the community consensus. In the instance that the community is split, it is up to the MOD(s) to try to compromise and meet as many community expectations as possible. SRC has a forums for the game that can serve as a meeting ground to workshop ideas and an archive of previous discussions ( https://www.speedrun.com/Gundam_Breaker_3/forum ). I agree discord is another option, as long as the rest of the community has discord. It's safe to assume however, that anybody wishing to submit runs here has an SRC account and can contribute on the forum.

  4. The guidance lies within the ability to compromise and agree on certain terms for the rules. A leaderboard with constantly fluctuating rules is a poorly run board. I would (again) recommend sticking with very basic, easy to understand categories and working from there IF the game grows, not because somebody wants to have XX World Records. IMO having "Main Story 100%- Standard/Casual/Hardcore/Extreme/NewType" then the same categories for multiplayer is highly excessive for a leaderboard with 2-3 people. I moderate SF2GB leaderboards and we have around a dozen runners and just in the last week added the second category to give an example. I think, even though you may want this multitude of categories, you'll find rules much easier to agree upon, and manage boards if you dropped the number of categories. Just to explain what I mean to give a clear example. Gundam Breaker 3 Categories. 100% Rules: 1: Timing begins when Mission 1-1 is selected 2: Timing ends when "Mission Completed" on 5-10

  1. "Standard" difficulty must be used and all missions must be completed.
  2. Glitches and any strategies to complete are allowed. Or something similar to that makes the rules easy to interpret and clear.

Hope this helps and good luck getting those boards in shape, I know you all can do it and sorry for typing a book.

I tried to use SLOBS, but found that OBS with SL Chatbot works better for me as well. Having the FrankerFaceZ integrated is pretty cool as well, so my vote is for using the separate programs (until SLOBS development catches up anyways).

Harvest Moon for SNES or Game Boy is definitely a good choice. If you want a little bit of platforming fun with a bit (heavy) RNG, Kirby's Dream Land is the bees knees.

Livesplit is the gold standard from what I understand, but there are other programs that do an accurate job.

Some people are going to be Aholes, that's all there is to it, you can't control that. What you can control is your reaction and attitude towards that person. You can improve Lucky, try keep a positive mental attitude and choose not to respond to negativity.

Whenever I get pissed while speedrunning, it makes my next run even worse and starts the downward repeating spiral. When that happens I tend to do some casual gaming to decompress (Chess or ALTTP random works for me) or go for a run.

Maybe put the game down completely for a while. I stopped playing Kirby's Dream Land for almost 4 months and PB'd my first week back at it.

Stress management is different from person to person, you just have to experiment and figure what works for you. Good luck buddy.

We're going to need more information than that my friend. What type of DS do you own (model year/ 2ds/3ds)? How much are you wanting to spend? Things like that will definitely result if you getting more productive responses.

Tom, from that perspective PED's would be allowed since it's your option and risk to use them and nobody is going to prevent you from participating without using them. But there are rules in place that prevent people from using them even if they can afford/willing to because it gives one an unfair advantage over those who train without them. Just because something allows someone to perform faster doesn't mean one should be able to use it.

In this circumstance, it looks to me as if buying the Jap. version of the game (for instance) is comparable to the efficient road bikes, the software/hardware add on similar to PED's.

I can understand your stance @Drakodan regarding faster console versions of games/flashlights for solar powered games (that sounds incredibly interesting, I'd like hear more about), but I feel like there's a definite difference between buying the faster (due to less text or something along those lines) version of an official game/ console and buying a piece of third party hardware/software that allows one to perform faster or more precise than a person without.

There are going to be gray areas in many circumstances of course, and every piece of hardware should go through it's own scrutiny.

@oddtom You've made good points, and there are other games that do allow assigning inputs to different buttons, however the games I know of that do allow that have the in game capabilities to assign inputs. I'm not arguing against being able to use the wheel to play the game, my argument is against using external software to allow one to play the game faster (since he said he would have to use the mouse's software, not in game remapping).

Now alternatively, games that allow emulators obviously allow one to remap the keys to a different controller, and those functions are emulator(external from the game) enabled.

I'm with you Tom, this is an interesting situation, but I tend to lean towards not requiring anybody to have to invest anything other than their time to be competitive with speedruns.
