Ubuntu operating system is trash, maybe it's okay now without unity, but repository management is a joke. Real gaming happens on Arch/Antergos/derivatives now.

Just SMBX doesn't work, for whatever reason. Still there are thousands of native linux games now that Steam has pushed the platform so strongly.

I mean, you could try new WINE patches, but WINE still sucks for a lot of things so probably don't bother haha.

This house has 3 Win10 licences and we are only using 2, i'll grab the hard drive from my parents old laptop and put in my PC and build win version.

Edit, I can build the WIN version, but not the WIN version with timer-mod.... I will test some more until I can get it working.

Oh I forgot about the new GP stuff for any%, I remember you mentioned that in the 0.9.4 thread. That will be cool.

I had the wrong idea about skips, I was thinking about new maps with an extra hard shortcut built-in. I don't remember exactly what I was thinking to be honest, but I think it actually wasn't something that is possible.

I'll have a think about what could be unlocked faster and how.

I actually smile a lot thinking about egg hunt, that could be a really good and fun idea.

Egg hunt should be one of the first unlocked levels, the randomness requires more perseverance in a speedrun. As long as there is no time limit. It should be unlosable, but potentially take a long time. Speedrunners will want to reset and casuals won't care. If it is at the very beginning of a speedrun there is no loss of previous effort, only the requirement for more effort.

I haven't had a look at egg hunt in a long time, I'll go and have a look at it and I should be back with some better information.

Gate skip makes any% faster, but it also makes any% exist. Extra categories is good. They've removed any% but added supertux% which means 30 extra minutes in total added to 0.9.4 categories. That's bad and good but it's more good than bad.

To make it more speedrunner friendly it needs to be less frustrating in some parts, and more frustrating in other parts. The extra frustration must be something that only affects speedrunners (but in a good way). The lesser frustration must be something that affects everyone positively.

Also, red boost is underpowered, pls buff.

I'm not sure about shortcuts. I might have to install the map editor and figure out what kind of things are possible. I think I need visual help before i can conceptualise an idea for that.

I like the idea of reverse. But we only need reverse for supertux mode.

Raising the barrier-to-entry is something i strongly oppose. Stupid kids should be encouraged to post unchallenged WR's. It means that there will be more like-minded individuals in our community. More STK videos on youtube will encourage even more friends to the party.

I can't figure out how to make subcategories for IL's. Maybe the default IL list should show only the most recent versions supertux times, and everything else in tabs? I think Alayan already suggested something like that. Even if we have all supertux times across versions in the primary list, eventually there will be a horizontal scrollbar there too.

It's just not fair that the best times get so drowned out by blank spaces and lesser categories.

There is a compromise between honoring skill and promoting inclusivity, I can't exactly think of what it is.

I have no opinion on old levels, someone else should give theirs and we can decide.

I do have an opinion about donation exclusive levels. They should always be in the list. Donations to an open source community project can almost never be a bad thing. That should be strongly encouraged.

I'll probably finish up the intermediate and expert% times on Ravenbridge to try and remind people it exists, but I'm leaving supertux% for a new runner. A new donating runner. That's 2 good things in one package. After a new runner puts something up I'll try to beat it at that difficulty. Having a temporary uncontested WR could be another donation exclusive perk, hahaha.

I don't know why i was thinking of Cornfield, Cornfield was the first time I ever saw a bird drop lol.

It works everywhere except Cocoa temple. It even works on Ravenbridge Mansion.

It doesn't matter how fast your PC is, Thunderbird drops on those levels are impossible for some reason. Are they the 2 most recent levels? I remember that Cornfield is new, but was Cocoa maybe added in 0.9.2?

Expert% times are good for story mode GP routing due to slightly different strategies from supertux speed. Maybe only one level is different, but it would be good to discover.

Intermediate% is great for discovering minor tweaks to higher speed strategies, and sometimes even completely new skips. Easy% times are kinda useless but the same rationales could be applied to keeping it there.

After taking this post into consideration, I recently rearranged the IL list to put the more significant higher speeds first and listing in descending order instead of ascending, that makes more sense, an makes it much more readable since the higher speed lists are more fully populated.

Maybe it would be good to list the versions in tabs, with the most recent version as default? Not a misc tab but 3 tabs, one for each version. I hate the little scroll bar at the bottom of the IL list screen, I'm sure I'm not alone in that feeling lol. It would be easier to navigate to the older times if they were in tabs. Scrolling down and scrolling right is 2 things, clicking a button is one thing. I think tabs are a good idea.

Sorry, I just needed more details because i wasn't quite understanding you, I could have phrased that better, it was a little too "immediate". I think the intended design is for the game to only be completable after all story challenges are complete. Maybe you could convince them that your idea is better?

Maybe the bubble should only open at 250? but no-one but us will be skipping the gate anyway so I don't think they will bother to change it.

When you say "real" any%, you mean one that is inbuilt into the game? It makes the game faster but does it grant a better casual experience? Maybe, it is usually better to have more options than less. Considering that supertux mode is in the story now, 250 could be the second game complete phase, with the credits appearing again.

Any% definition is just "beat the game as fast as possible" whilst the other categories are "complete the entire game as fast as possible (all story challenges)" The definition would be the same without these changes, but gate skip would still be required.

Actually now that I have typed all of this, I understand you. Opening the gate on 180 makes sense. The way I was thinking about it was I thought it would only be good for us, which wouldn't be worth changing the game. But it's probably good for casuals too, so it's probably good.

Your idea is solid.

I've been overthinking this but I think it's important, many people play this game and we don't want to meddle too much unless we are sure. I've already meddled too much when it was inappropriate and it's only been a distraction to the devs.

Gate skip still works. The gate is closed until 250, but the bubble for Fort Magma opens at 180 points.

@Alayan I mean a %100 achievements run, that's why i suggested adding it to the back of an any% run. I guess that wouldn't need to be put on the back of story mode anyway, it could just be done in a big custom GP.

This skip absolutely gives me a better time on the nitro challenge, nice find! Using your new tech, I take the regular entrance (not woodramp) into the pyramid, wiggle around and get most of the nitros in the pyramid on the first two laps, then use the skip for lap three. It's even better if you are lucky enough to find a boost power-up and save it for the end.

A lot of time is lost slowing down to pick up the nitros, a more skilled driver like you guys might still get a better time going around the longer way, but it really helps for me, thanks! :) (Edit: Nitro challenge should be faster for everyone now actually.)

This makes Shifting Sands faster than Antediluvian Abyss for the GPs, definitely worth testing.

I've added the clean 0.9.3 binaries to the resources section, I added your name as author considering all i did was add your code.

I've also removed the name of the that cool guy on the speedometer mod resource, still not sure whether they wanted their name here or not, but better to be safe. Also, I'm not sure if the speedometer mod even belongs in a speedrunning resources collection anyway. It's harmless, but I don't think it's harmless enough. I don't think anything outside the game should be changed except the timer, the timer is necessary.

Also I removed the old timer mod without thinking, i'm not sure if that was necessary. But we have the enhanced timer made by @Alayan now anyway.

Thoughts?

Yo @Kitoko could you please rename your https://www.speedrun.com/stk/guide/r2thx GP guide to match the others? Instead of "gran prix" it should be "GP". That way it will look cleaner and not be spelled incorrectly lol. I'm surprised @Alayan hasn't mentioned it, considering its etymology.

I'm upset because I don't want to have any actually good runs, like @UbuntuJackson runs be void. I'm okay when i need to void my own runs, I know exactly how trash they are, I'm not saying that in a joking way. I would like to have a rule that satisfies everyone, which is why I am playing devil's advocate and not deleting bad ideas. Remember that I said "Lol I'm going too far here"

  • The game does not let you edit config files from within the game itself. My point was that custom karts are a feature of the game.

I still think the rule is dumb. It should be up to the verifier to determine whether or not an add-on kart impacts the run in any significant way.

I'm guilty of structuring my writing in an unnecessarily convoluted way. I've made it too confusing. :( I simultaneously hate and love the english language, it can be florid, but it can also be confusing.

Edit: Is it even possible to make a 1 pixel hitbox kart? And would the add-ons moderator allow it in the game? Is there a minimum and maximum texture/hit-box size?

Here's the thing, DLC karts are allowed in Mario Kart 8 speedruns. I think our situation should be exactly the same. I don't know how the add-ons submission process works, but there must be some kind of vetting process. The STK add-ons (DLC) moderators decided these karts were allowed in the game.

A final word. Vanilla runs are more "legit" and will always be seen as the "real" world record, even if a DLC run beats a vanilla time, the vanilla time holder is well within their rights to entitle their run the "Vanilla World Record" I don't think existing DLC runs should be voided. I don't think DLC or vanilla require a subcategory. I also think that trying to isolate our future DLC runs to minor categories is something to be considered, and that we shouldn't try beating a current vanilla record using DLC karts. I don't think it requires a rule, just courtesy.

Sub note, I thought that the Katie kart was a bit dodgy and might provide an unfair advantage when driving, but I just tried it, for some reason that kart turns like a brick. She's a "medium kart" but she feels almost like a heavy kart. There's just something off about it. Even considering that, I think that this one new kart should be banned from running with/against unless/until it is accepted in the base game, it's just too small.
