Is there no way to receive an email when someone sends me a private message? I frequently miss messages for long periods of time because I don't check SRC frequently.

There is not unfortunately. The messaging feature was kinda half-baked when it was originally implemented, and then not long after that the site began transitioning to new ownership which kinda wacked up all the development priorities. Hopefully they get around to it sometime soon.
