Four questions about speedrunning the game
6 years ago

Hi! ^^

I'm new here but familiar with the speedruns of the game. I've seen many runs, some tutorials (always difficult to me because of my not fluent english but still interesting), and I've made myself some speedruns, unrecorded (my PB is 1:56:55, but the last time I made speedruns of the game I didn't know a lot of tricks). For some reasons (which are not the topic here ^^) I really prefer the black and white version, that why I always run this version.

My questions:

 1. I know in the traditional No S&Q/WW/OoB we are allowed to die in the shop, and I suppose it's still being a SS run, but: is there a category "No S&Q/WW/OoB and No Death"? The reason I ask this is I like to make a run without dying, it's ...prettier I think, we see Link making the whole adventure without dying, and without seeing the files menu. If there is no category like this, can it be created? I swear I don't want to create a category to be the first at something, on the contrary, I like challenges. But, truly, making Link dying is pertubing me (despite there is no real death warping).

 2. I've heard on a video tutorial for LADX (which works for LA I suppose) that the only emulators allowed are Gambatte, BizHawk and BGB. But the video has been posted several month ago, so my questions are: are these three ones still allowed? And are there other ones allowed?

 3. Is it allowed, in the emulator, to configure a key to simulate the A+B+Start+Select input?

 4. I've heard that JP 1.0 and US 1.0 are recommended for LADX runs (and, I suppose, LA runs), why? I've also heard that most of people use the JP (1.0) version, is it because of texts shorter?

Thanks a lot for all you will can anwser about these questions! :)

nosqwwoob is an LADX thing for the most part. In LA you usually run what is usually called Warpless, which uses deaths and S+Q wherever appropriate. There isn't really anyone trying to run deathless tom y knowledge.

Deathless would be pretty tedious as it would involve lots of extra rupees in order to buy an extra thing. And would add backtracking.

Hello, thank you for your (rapid) reply!
nosqwwoob is an LADX thing for the most part. In LA you usually run what is usually called Warpless, which uses deaths and S+Q wherever appropriate.
But why that difference between the two games? (if I am not wrong, for a speedrun there is no real difference between the games)
Deathless would be pretty tedious as it would involve lots of extra rupees in order to buy an extra thing
Not so much, it just require 200 rupees to buy the shovel, which can be easily collected on D1, the road to D2 and D2. The rule "you can die but only if it isn't advantaging you" is not ...enough accurate to me. ^^ (and make the run less elegant, in my personal opinion)

Well LA is the original game, and has more glitches in it, so it has more options for the speed run. You're skipping more things, especially with stuff like the fire rod deloading glitch. In my opinion it's more fun. Also you can do Blaino skip.

LADX's OoB rule bans Blaino Skip, but some people prefer that run for other reasons.

You can run whatever you want though, ultimately. I did LA Any% non-ACE even though it's allowed in the Any% category, because I'm not interested in ACEs.

I'm sure they'd accept a deathless run on the LADX Nosqwwoob board. (LADX does have its own forum by the way, if that's the game you're more interested in).

 1. Feel free to run whatever you find the most interesting and what you have the most fun with. As for the leaderboards, usually categories get added out of interest from multiple people. There are a lot of categories one could make for this game, but it would just clutter up everything. But again, just because it isn't on here, don't be shy about running whatever you want.

 2. Those are the only 3 emulators that are allowed. (Bizhawk is really the same as Gambatte)

 3. You are not allowed to bind one key to multiple inputs. One key has to correspond to only 1 button.

 4. In terms of glitches and tricks, 1.0 (US and JP) has a trick called super jump and a few other things (I think) while the other versions do not (or a nerfed version of them). The text in this game is suuuuper slow, so JP saves quite a bit of time from text. Also in the JP version there are some NPCs where you can completely skip their text by pressing B.

• In LADX, there is a deathless category which is the legacy run, aka a very very old route. In LA there are different glitches which make the route completely different and, along with that, there is a deathwarp used once we get the D4 key. The Legacy category isn't really a thing in LA though.

• All versions (1.0/1.1) are allowed.

Allowed platforms:

-Game Boy -Game Boy Color -Game Boy Advance -Super Game Boy 2 -Gamecube Game Boy Player -Bizhawk -Gambatte revision 537 or higher -BGB version 1.4.3 or higher

Banned platforms: -Super Gameboy -All other emulators

• no you have to press the four buttons, pressing them in different order results to different outcome on some tricks in the game.

• Long time ago, in LADX, the US version was the only one allowed (still used in Legacy) In LA it has always been the Japanese version though. The Japanese version is faster obviously because the texts are shorter. 1.0 is better to run on because there are glitches exclusive to this version.

[Edit] I guess zmaster was faster than me :P

@PresJPolk > oki, thanks. :) What is "ACE"? (I knew it but I don't remember) And, if you know, what is "ICS"? (sorry for my newbie's questions ^^' )

@zmaster91 > you answer for everything, thanks a lot, really! :)

@aulos > thanks too!

I think I will never make a great performance, in any category, but I think I can make something cool and share it with you. :)

Edit: perhaps I will have other little questions in a near future, but for now I have what I searched for, thanks again guys!

No problem! Also if you need any help with the glitches, feel free to ask, there are not much explanations for the LA-only glitches yet. ACE means Arbitrary Code Execution, basically by naming all three files a certain way, you can rewrite stuff in the game, and it is used to make a credit warp when you open one chest in the doghouse.

ICS means Instrument Cutscene Skip.
Also if you need any help with the glitches, feel free to ask, there are not much explanations for the LA-only glitches yet.
Oki, thanks. For now I collect informations by looking tutorials about LADX, then I try tricks (and other things like that...) on LA. I have a first goal which is making a good run without hard things to do (for me ^^) like, for exemple, the hookshot-jumping.
ACE means Arbitrary Code Execution, basically by naming all three files a certain way, you can rewrite stuff in the game, and it is used to make a credit warp when you open one chest in the doghouse.
I see. xD Not that kind of glitch I want to use. But interesting for my personnal knowledge. ^^

Thanks too for the discord link and the explanation for "ICS". :)

In LA we skip the hookshot though :) You should watch an LADX run and then an LA run to see the difference!
