Gex Trilogy Runs

We were discussing this in the Discord, so I figured it would be a good idea to also have a thread for this here.

As you might know, this site allows people to submit multi-game-runs as a separate game. This would work well for Gex in my opinion, since the games are not terribly long and it would also not require people to switch between very different systems.

Here are a few categories we came up with:

  • Gex Trilogy any%
  • Gex Trilogy any% no WW¤
  • Gex Trilogy 100%

¤ This would be identical to normal any% for Gex 1 and 2, but would ban Wrong Warps in Gex 3.

As for version differences, it would probably work fine to use the subcategories "N64" and "PS" to separate the runs for Gex 2 and 3. These subcategories would ignore Gex 1, since to my knowledge, there aren't real version differences in that game, aside from loading/lag, so people could just go with whatever version they want. I'm not an expert for Gex 1, though, so please correct me if I'm wrong!

Another approach for the PS-version of Trilogy runs would be to actually require people to play Gex 1 on PS, so the category would look less arbitrary and have an easy setup to switch games. In that case, we could call the N64 subcategory something like "any version" and have no restrictions for Gex 1.

Some more ideas:

  • 3D Gex any% / 100%
  • Handheld Gex any% / 100%
  • All Gex games any% / 100%

What are your opinions about all of this? Discuss :)

The 3 categories sound like a great idea. I think that there should only be 3 categories (+N64 (Any?)/PS1 subcategories), but I also really like the idea of 3D Gex Any%/100% runs, because the 1st one is really different because of 2D.

PS: I don't think anyone would want to run the GBC Gex games xD They don't even exist on this site yet.

lol, I wasn't even aware there were Gex games on the GBC. There's even a TAS of Gex 3 GBC already done. That has most of the routing worked out.

All of these sound like a really good idea :D I’m good with whatever the final result will be. Should we add in the GBC Gex games to this site? Will these trilogy/multiple game runs be timed by RTA timing or will they be timed by adding the total times of each game run that you do? I prefer RTA timing when running multiple games rather then the other way. What do you guys think? :)

RTA would make sense and if we went with a "PS-only trilogy", there would be literally no setup time between games. Setup would only really start to matter, if you wanted to switch from PC Gex 1 to N64.

I would also suggest calling the new page itself something like "Multiple Gex games" or "Gex multi-game runs" instead of Trilogy, so we at least have the option to do something with the handheld stuff if we ever want to. But I would also be fine with just calling it Trilogy to have a cool name for the page :P

The admins seem to discourage having empty leaderboards. I agree with it in some aspect but disagree as well. There shouldn't be pointless boards, but seeing one at all, even if empty, could encourage people to be the first. I don't think they'll get upset directly if you add the GBC games; they haven't with the Command & Conquer series.

Either "Multple Gex Games" or "Gex Trifecta" would work best. Here are the multi-game leaderboards that I know of:

Multiple Mario GamesMultiple Pikmin GamesHalo Co-opHarry Potter PC 1-3 "Trifecta"Jak and Daxter TrifectaRayman TrifectaBioShock TrifectaCrash Bandicoot TrifectaMulti-GTA Runs

To prevent an empty game page, it would probably be best to wait until someone completed a multi-Gex run.
