The interpretation of the rule seems pretty clear to me: simply press the back direction to cancel the jet dash + take damage, and keep going. (If you just press A/B to cancel it, you don't take damage because you didn't move in the process.) I see no problem with then using the invincibility frames to sneak in a couple high jumps as small Wario to get through a little quicker.

As for clipping through ceilings, that actually behaves differently since it's caused by a different quirk of jet movement than spike dodging. You can tell if you are "clipped" into the ceiling if, when you cancel the jet dash while holding the forward direction, you pause for a brief moment before going forward. There are a couple pixels where you may look clipped into the ceiling but you actually are still in open air.

I honestly don't think there is any reason to punish yourself extra for making a simple mistake, especially since it won't gain time. If you find yourself clipped through a solid block, just cancel the dash (this may cause adverse side effects if you go for the ladder skipping in SC29, but nothing outlandish). As long as you aren't trying to get a dubious timesave in the process, it's all in good faith. And if you somehow accidentally go through spikes, just press the back direction and continue the run.

Unless you go for and get top two, nobody will care if you give yourself the benefit of the doubt. If you have clearly skirted the leaderboard rules, your run will simply be rejected and you can try again.

But this is assuming you make a mistake. Practice, practice, practice :)

Glitchless Best Ending wouldn't be the most appealing category to add, in my opinion, mostly due to the potential length. As it is, this game already has plenty of categories, and a couple of them have almost no runs.

If you want to do such a run, you can still submit it to the Best Ending category. g0go's first world record run of Best Ending back in the day didn't use any in-level glitches, but it was nevertheless submitted to the Best Ending category, which contained two other runs with extra glitches. At this point it's probably not possible to get that world record without using glitches, but the purpose of adding categories is typically adding new challenges or goals for a variety of runners, not giving one or two people a free WR.

I'm not a mod; this is just my two cents. If you want to convince someone to add the category, it's best if you do a recorded run first so that the board isn't in limbo.

TAS

Edit: there's this TAS, which claims to go for entertainment while losing no time, so if that's the case this should be one optimal outcome: https://dai.ly/xexk94?start=666

It looks like you have to have a run on the board (either full-game or level) before you can add a resource. Either way, it is still possible to access decent splits for this board by using the Livesplit browser as I noted before.

SoapAgent4 years ago

If you feel that your splits are good quality and can be used by a greater portion of the community, there's not much reason not to upload splits. If you choose to do that, the process is fairly simple: navigate to the Resources page, scroll to the 'Splits' section, and then click on the … icon. There should be a menu item that allows you to add the splits there.

Keep in mind that there is already a method for sharing splits in Livesplit. If you go to the "Open splits" submenu, there is an option for downloading from speedrun.com. From there, you can download splits from anybody who has shared their splits to splits.io, and there will definitely be somebody on a board of this size who has done so.

On the original release the control scheme setting isn't there, and in its place is the language. (You can't even access the options from the main screen; you have to open a save file first.)

On the Japanese version that option is replaced by the keyboard setting (full kana or just qwerty keyboard). I assume the European release also has a language setting like the American cart, that is if the release is at all different. So as far as I know, the Collection version is the only one that allows for button control, and consequently this glitch.

Note: This DOES NOT work with touchscreen input, and therefore it doesn't work in the original release. You must have the Scribblenauts Collection 2-in-1 card/ROM in order to use buttons.

Copied from description: The input for performing this glitch is incredibly simple: just do a jump (B, X, or up) while holding left/Y or right/A, release all inputs, then press a jump button again. You can also hold either direction before doing the second jump, as shown here where I hold right to jump straight to the Starite in A1-1.

There is no limitation on this trick in terms of which direction your first or second jump goes, so you could turn around midair, although you'll have to keep Maxwell's massive jumping inertia in mind. The only thing you'll have to worry about is how fast you let go of and repress the buttons, so that you reach max height without Maxwell falling too far in between jumps.

Edit: the main use of this glitch is in levels like these, where it is very easy to grab the starite by double jumping. This is somewhat faster than going into the sketchpad and using an item. Another example of this is the first "action" level in the tutorial world, where there is a ledge that is just too high to jump up legally.

The "satellite" version is a smaller version of the normal level (the world that you are playing on). It is unlocked after getting 100% on the respective normal level. Because it is smaller, it would give an unfair advantage when compared to the larger level.

I haven't actually played the game in a year, so maybe they removed that feature entirely? I might check later today.

I see that this board got added recently, which is cool. About a year ago, I created this video, which is a 100% run of the satellite version of the banana level (Level 5?):

I know that adding too many categories could cause category bloat, but perhaps just one level category, 100% Satellite could be added.

It seems like you can clip into ceilings by creating a fan, dropping it on Maxwell such that it blows upwards, then using a solid object in the same fashion as in the above post. However, it is incredibly finicky, and so far I haven't found much use for it.

Additionally, you can attach a starite to a rope, cord, floss, leash, etc., and attach that to a metal gate that is blocking it. Depending on the circumstances, this can allow you to cheese plenty of levels.

SoapAgent4 years ago

I've also inadvertently pushed swimming entities into the ground by dropping stuff on them, but this is the first time I've seen a super useful exploit in this game.

Unfortunately, this seems like it's a very specific case that can't be replicated in many other levels, but if I find other levels with good clipping methods I'll post them here, and I encourage others to also experiment with clipping.

Can someone who knows Japanese tell me what this item is? It's used a couple times throughout the JP 100% run to skip barriers and it would be really cool if there's an equivalent in English that works the same

Here's an example of it:

(If you couldn't tell, I don't know any Japanese lol)

SoapAgent4 years ago

I don't run this game, but I think that, instead of making entire new categories for the US/JP versions, maybe you could just have a variable that can apply to all categories and act as a subcategory, similar to how the SM64 board at https://www.speedrun.com/sm64 handles platforms/releases (for example).

It would make sense to have the 20R/50R categories be miscellaneous categories since, as you said, they don't go through the fullest amount of gameplay available in that mode. However, you can do one or both of these things and still have a reasonable board. Again, I'm just offering an "outside" perspective, but I hope it helps (:

Edit: hmm. Didn't realize someone already replied with basically the same answer

SoapAgent4 years ago

There is a run on the 99 Rounds Type A board which looks like it was meant for the 50 rounds board (:

SoapAgent4 years ago

Same. I wouldn't mind having an extra variable or even an extra category since some might see it as unfair, but I'm not a mod so whatever works

By "legacy" do you mean using an old version of the game? Just to be clear because I'd be down to try full game but I want to know how many worlds that would be Edit: also don't currently know how to access old versions

Nice find, but seriously, what an awful glitch. Imagine playing L28 over and over and calling that a speedrun lmao

As a result of this finding, I have found that my in-game leaderboard time is capped at 10:04.08, which makes me wonder what kind of hackery the 1st place person used to get a 6 minute time
