No, nor is it allowed to use mGBA standalone. Assuming you're on windows, BizHawk is about as easy to set up as RetroArch anyway.

Hi, I am making this post to draw attention to the fact that the emulator runs on the board have inaccurate/unfair load times compared to the runs done on console. This was a problem with the run from a few days ago on WiiUVC, which has since been deleted, although there are still some pretty low times done on emu, most of which seem to be DeSmuME, which is known in other communities to be inaccurate and too fast. This also applies to runs done on flashcarts, SD loading, NDS-bootstrap, and other console methods that bypass the use of cartridges. Currently melonDS is the only emulator considered suitable for speedrunning DS games. Going forward, I have two separate suggestions for how this can be mitigated. Either runs under a certain threshold (such as 58:00 or 58:30) should not be accepted if run on desmume/wii u/flashcart etc., or they can be accepted with no restrictions but should be hidden by default (this is a toggle in the board moderation settings). Thank you for your time, and I hope this post raises awareness and helps a solution come forth.

I don't really see what benefit an NG+ category would provide. In the context of a speedrun, the only differences I can think of would be the following:

  1. Fewer cutscenes for unlocking stages and toy room items
  2. Different odds of playing microgames that have been unlocked
  3. The stages don't automatically end at their original cutoff

1 is not a meaningful difference in my opinion — it simply cuts out a little bit of time from the run in which you weren't really doing anything anyway. 2 also doesn't really do much, due to the random nature of the microgame selection you can't really have a 100% expected set of microgames that you will play. 3 means that the process will feel less natural and be a bit annoying, since you would have to manually exit out of the stage after beating the boss, or perhaps some arbitrary rule would be made to where you would have to die on the round after the boss, which seems silly also.

Regarding a different completionist category, I can agree that the current ones on the board are long and tedious, but that is the nature of WarioWare completion, and this game has so much side content that it just adds on more. The categories that exist, while tedious and unlikely to be run, at least feel natural and influenced by the game since there is a mission or some sort of reward for completing them (as opposed to some random category like "all purple missions", which the game doesn't give any recognition of). Any others might feel too random, not to mention that there is already 3 other categories with similar goals. My only gripe with the all missions category is the requirement for multiplayer, amiibo, and doing a studio session, all of which don't seem fitting for a speedrun (even less so than getting a high score in Manhole or completing Wario Kard), but that's not the topic of this discussion.

In summary, I don't think NG+ is a fitting category for this game. The current "all x" categories are okay as they are, and I don't think there is a reason to add another. If you are looking for a different experience with the game, there still is the IL categories (a different can of worms honestly, but they're there). Or you can just play the game how you would like, and don't worry about submitting to speedrun.com.

In general, you don't "need" a timer to submit runs, regardless of the rta category. I don't know the details of your setup but if you are willing to run without the assistance of a timer then you can just upload the "raw" video of your run, submit with an approximate time (within a few seconds) and it can be retimed precisely by a moderator.

I am fully aware that clipping is not a new concept in this family of games, but this felt unique. I was running through the underground room in 1-2 and threw a ninji against the wall, inadvertently taking damage because it bounced back at me. But when I took damage, I also clipped one tile through the floor. I feel like this could be worth exploring if it has any use, and it does seem different from the other clip methods I've seen (namely, there's no vine involved). Here's a picture of the result: https://photos.app.goo.gl/Z4wCaZG731NnxXEw8

Forgive my nitpicking, but boiler and ladder glitches aren't OoB (the only OoB in any category is the S3 stuff in any%). But for the sake of this let's say that they are. Or perhaps we can call it "no OoB/camera tricks", although that's sort of pushing a weird name and overly specific restrictions. Regardless, the route I'm envisioning is as follows:

  • do the intended levels to unlock S3 (you would probably want to do N2 Red early simply for overworld reasons)
  • do S1 Green, and N2 Red if you haven't already, as well as W3 Green. Together these will grant access to E2 for the helmet, which you can then use to beat a couple levels for the first glove.
  • from here, follow the intended path to unlock W6/E4. Get both grey treasures from there, get the garlic from S3 Red, and then do the high jump sequence break
  • do the super flippers sequence break used in glitchless, then N4 Green and N6 Grey
  • S5 Grey, S2 Blue, S3 Green
  • E2 Green, E6 Grey, E3 Green
  • N1 Blue, Rudy It could be an interesting category, but I can't speak for whether or not a new category will suddenly get added when we already have 3 flavors of any% on the board. (That doesn't mean you can't run it of course, simply that you would have to submit it to the normal any% category for lack of a better place.)

Edit: I made a readable route here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/10kRj8UHxiZ9YnvWGegFm_cBVYDSDs2Z2qLsabVLTpnk/edit?usp=drivesdk From there you can copy directly into livesplit if you wish.

If you can, I would highly recommend using splits, even if it doesn't end up being necessary for verification. The rules are saying that if your video is too choppy or otherwise not smooth enough to retime with, then it can't be used. If you don't have issues with streaming then you probably don't have to worry about this.

2DS is functionally identical to old 3DS, New2DS is functionally identical to New3DS

Edit: why do I always post answers seconds after someone else does

SoapAgent3 years ago

You don't.

That being said, the rules state that time starts on the first frame of selecting the level, and ends on the first frame of touching the last trophy. You can just use one of the many video retimers out there.

Edit: oh yeah that's right, game rules exist. Probably should be fixed so that they match the category rules. I'm curious if this discrepancy affects any positions on the leaderboard

You can submit your combined in game time alongside the real time of your run (that's what the option is there for). Most people don't do it because it's time consuming, but you can if you want.

SoapAgent3 years ago

That PB may have been set when it was possible to move before the level fully started. This was patched early on. Another explanation is that a time from a later level was applied to L1 since beating L40 puts you back at L1.

This has been discussed here, https://www.speedrun.com/tts/thread/223em But to reiterate: after beating a level, press the "repeat" button, and while the screen fades out, press the "next level" button. Keep in mind this will interfere with your best times for each level.

The rules for the level categories seem to be reversed (any% says to not use warps, full level says do as you would in any%). Should be a quick fix, but I thought I'd point it out

I can offer a few guesses as to why that was chosen as the start cue, but a mod would know better. It likely has to do with ease of verification, and is also an easy cue for the runner (simply press 'split' and A at the same time).

If you want to program or configure an auto splitter, people will appreciate your effort.

Typically, it's not just a "one click" setup — an individual or group of individuals needs to analyze raw footage from different runners/capture setups, build a database of loading frames, and do sessions of testing, tweaking, and debugging. In a visually rich game such as this, the utmost care will need to be taken to avoid false positives. It doesn't help that the in game load screens have multi-frame animations, either. Actually, the easiest aspect of this theoretical graphic auto splitter would be the stop time, since that is just when a specific cutscene starts, which should be very easy to work with.

I believe the number stands at 81%. It's a very old challenge, with quite a few people doing documentation on it, but most don't address the full potential of the glitches so it may be hard to find information on specific items.

If you really don't want to submit a video but a game board still requires proof of IGT (Dread certainly isn't the only board like this), it's common practice to upload a photo of the game's IGT screen to a long-term and reputable image hosting site like imgur (Google Drive works too, but you might end up deleting the file later), and paste a link to that photo in the video field or the run description.

For some reason my posts are showing up as blank and glitched, so I'll just put this here.

Basically, none of the other runners' submissions for L35 100% (current or obsolete) collect the hidden gem at the end of the level. You have to jump from the platform before the trophy and go left a ways to get to it.

Can people see this text?
