I would agree with Category I for the start as long as there not so many runs it would be not such a good idea to blow up the Leaderboard with to much new categories.

If I would be in charge I just would setup a DOS-Box/ScummVM, Amiga, C64 (Atari ST, Apple) Leaderboard with the two subcategories Any% and 100% for each one of them. This kind of setup is often used (check out Lemmings i.e.) (btw if you need help here you I can support you or just ask Non-Slim-Jim I am sure he would also be happy to help -> We are both mods for other games also)

Its true that having a basic setup for everyone to have a fair competion is needed, but also tricky to define, not sure yet how to approach that. I am not a big DOS-Box/ ScummVM user so there is not much experience I can share.

I am also not sure about the copy protection, it would be more difficult for new runners to get a version with copy protection (I assume most version avialable have it removed). On the Amiga I still have to do a 4-digit input even if its always the same symbol -> I dont see much difference if you have to look up the code or press the default code to open the door but I am not 100% sure how the copy protection of this game really works and how times consuming it is to find out the right code.

For the Amiga configuration I could hand you over my setup and then we recommend using that in the rules. My setup is pretty basic so I am sure everybody using an Amiga emulator can configure it.

It is a pretty tricky topic, but we should definitly extend the Leaderboards somehow, this game just deserves it :)

btw: For me personal (as long as I am the only Amiga runner) I dont care if everybody is on the same Leaderboard for the beginning as long as people can identify the difference on the Leaderboard (like The Secret of Monkey Island I am in last place, because the Amiga version is different and I am the only one running the Amiga version but people can esay identify why). So if setting up the Leaderborads is to diffcult, I can also live with that. My main goal here on src is to represent the Amiga community and not getting Records.

Hi

thanks for the reply Matt :) No I am using an Emulator for my runs (WinUAE its pretty common) I emulated an A1200 but if more runners will pop up for the Amiga version we just might have to agree on a basic setup so the loading times are the same (or use an autoremover like in LiveSplit for the Loading times).

About WHDLoad vs. Floppies: True both options are available but in my opinion there is no real reason to go with floppies (because of the loading times) and all other Amiga runners I am aware of are using WHDLoad versions of the games, so its very common. Maybe just set up a rule like "WHDLoad is recommended" something like that.

About setting up the categories: I will reply in the other thread.

Cheers

Hi ho all

So just for fun I was trying to run the Amiga Version and noticed some major differences to the other runs so here are my findings:

I am playing the WHDLoad Version of Maniac Mansion 1.6_1571. This is nothing special about this just to mention it.

I wanted to do a run with all the skips possible and all of them are working very well (thaks for the findings especially purple skip is great). The problem is the inner door lab is locked and I need the code from the Arcademachine to open it. The other door is also closed but the copy protection was removed. I am not aware of any default code to open the inner door like in the NES version (does anybody know something?). So in order to open the door I have to check the highscore in the machine using the quarter from the safe. It is not enough to just have the cutscene play and try out the different codes, according to my research it does only work after you chekced the highscore yourself (again I can be wrong). After repairing the wires it takes round about 4m until the cutscene plays (I checked the Deluxe Version it seems like there is not cutscene and you can go for the highscore immediatly?) So in this 4 minutes there is plenty of time to perform a lot of actions without losing any time. To not just stand there and wait for the cutscene I feed green tentacle to kill some time.

If you perform the green tentacle skip and get caught no other char can get to the top floors because the game still thinks there is somebody else up there and the other chars refuse to go up there. If I go back with the char who did perform the skip everything went to normal again. So I need to go at least two times on the upper floors and this only works if I dont get caught and take the longer route to go back down again. Does the game behave the same on DOS? Just get one char to the green tentacle and try to get another one up there, it should not work imho.

These are my main findings, I also did find some super small time saves, but they dont matter for the Runs submitted to this Leaderboard. I share them anyway because I also did not notice them in the Deluxe runs.

  • Open Radio you receive the batteries immediatly and dont have to pick up the radio and then open it
  • Use Batteries with Flashlight when it is still in the kitchen. Your char will put the batteries in and also picks up the flashlight in one move.

Okay that all I can think of right now.

I also decided to make the most useless char Jeff to my main hero, and perform most actions with him. Not sure if this is the best choice, but I liked it.

Of course I wanted to submit my run to the Leaderboard, what category would this run be? What should I select?

I am also working on the Meteor Police ending without any skips, but I guess this wont be faster then my current route. Lets see

You can check out my run here:

Hi,

sure we can come up with new categories if you like to run them we can create them.

Tutorial: Nobody will miss it, but it can be added if desired. Completionist: This would be the Full Game run then Other difficulty settings: Would blow up the LB to much, but we can talk about some adjustments when selecting different difficulties Terminate all opponents: Its the same as 100% category for Warlords, so I think we can also add this No ruins/ temples: Should be added later, if there is still need for more categories.

So there seems to be some need for new categories so I wll create a few :)

Cheers

Welcome xatrixx,

of course we can change the rules for that, it is a valid point you bring up here. When I did create these Rules/Category I just didnt want to dicate everything from the start, its better to talk with other people about what is best. You can join our discord for further discussion / or use this forum of course.

If the difference is still that huge you can reject it, I thought I matched the speed sry about that. Well then I try to use FS-UAE then.

Hesse, GermanyMilkToast5 years ago

Hi,

thx for the answers. I was just unsure to submit a run which is kinda messy but still faster then the current WR just because of the loading times (without claryfing this). I will go with a similar setup like Arran in my future attempts to match the same loading times.

See you on the Leaderboard ;)

Hi,

alright I am atm practicing the Amiga version I think in a couple of days I will submit a run. So can you please add the Amiga as platform, that would be awesome.

Cheers and Thanks

Hesse, GermanyMilkToast5 years ago

Hi all,

I noticed that the loading times between the levels are different. In Arans runs they are round about 3-4 sec in Reboots run the loading times are taking about 10s which is quite are difference on the long run.

I also did some runs and was using my standard setup for runs which is basically a A1200 (68020 AGA Cycle Exact with 2MB RAM + 2MB Z2Fast RAM) WHDLoad version. Well of course I use this to reduce loading times which are the same as Arrans loading times. I did a messy run with many crashes and its sub 17m (but 7/7 wins) but of course beating Reboot was no match with his extended Loading times.

So should we agree on some basic setup for running this game or is it a free for all?

Hi,

I use a tool called captura to capture my videos. Its free to use and does the job quite good.

Hi,

I was also doing some runs of this game last year and I discovered that you can beat it without playing any minigames. But in my opinion this results in a very boring run so not sure if this strat should be an option. Basically you just dive for a coin and after that you keep Flintheard busyso he cant get any gold. It took me 5m 21s but I am sure you can easily lower it also I was playing the slower Amiga version. You can check out my run here:

btw: Can aou please add Amiga as platform to the game, just in case. Would be awesome.

Hi,

thx for the answer. Alright will submit it to others. Can you do me a favor and add Amiga as platform to the game so I can mark it correctly?

Thanks

Hi,

I completed a run for this game on the Amiga. So it seems that this version is rather different to the others (and way easier to complete). Is it possible to add the Amiga Version to the Leaderboard?. You cancheck out my run here and make up your mind about it.

Hi,

this is the conversion of Lotus Turbo Challenge 2, they just renamed it to Lotus Turbo Challegne on the Mega Drive - because of reasons.

Hesse, GermanyMilkToast5 years ago

Hi,

no worries :)

I am totally fine with being on the current lb, as long as you can see on what System I am using. I was just listing those 3 Options because I encountered them already here on src (communities handling such cases different in my experience).

There is no need for a seperation of the lb on system level - agreed. I would suggest that the only option to seperate the lb would be floppy and cd-rom (because there are some differences - mainly Caves and Dialogskip). But as long as not more runners finish this game we can postpone this discussion.

I was trying to find out all the differences about floppy and cd-rom (maybe as you mentioned there is also a difference between Amiga/MS-DOS Emulated/Real Hardware) I would try to collect all those information as soon as this will become more relevant in some distant future.

So overall thx for adding my run to the current lb I am fine with it.

If you seek for more competiton, Settlers 2 is not a prime candidate. And dont worry someday a new runner will ermerge and will challenge you.

@23Banzaj I second your opinion, its just the way it works best. Hope you get well soon buddy.

@NormannK GG for the runs, looking good. I hope you will make some more in the near future, because I have strats for them, but I still have trouble to set a decent time. Level 10 I have no clue yet how to win fast - it seems to be so easy. Keep on running

Hi NormannK,

good question. Are there any patch notes or other references for the History Edition available to check that there are no differences?
