.> I dislike remote hosts because they tend to be pretty expensive for decent servers, If you got a good net and can get a second pc to use and leave on, you can always set up your own and do all the work. Tho most people either don't know how or want to deal with the amount of work required so they are willing to pay for servers.
Check on google I'm sure you'll find some decent hosts but here are some I can suggest that my Guild has used; https://www.gameservers.com/ - Variety of servers with flexibility. https://www.vilayer.com/ - Some what cheaper hosting based on slot sizes. http://www.fragnet.net/ - More known then other unmentioned.
you can compare others and the ones mentioned here: https://comparegamehosting.com/
Good luck, hosting / running servers is a big time commitment much like speedrunning but also a money investment.
thank you for the updates at least. looking forward to more info about how things will work as the event draws near.
That's a bummer that you guys had to move it but thanks for the update at least. Give me time to try and tidy my setup a bit for it and more time for you guys to do your things to get ready for it.
Anyone that is in charge of the setup and planning etc, I hope to hear about more details soon after most fo the runs have been confirmed and times start to be set.
depending on what games you plan to run some do have ways of giving you an in game time for completion tho that is still a game to game thing as also something that the games community decides if that is what time will be accepted or if it needs to be Real Time (RTA) using a split timer on a pc etc..
For most people that do have a pc and a capture card that takes HDMI input you can record it directly to your pc with OBS or Xsplit. I personally use a Internal Capture card that is hooked via HDMI cable from my PS4 or other devices through a splitter back to my TV so i can record and play on the two different screens easily.
There is plenty of information on how to go about this but it would require some investment into equipment if you want to record better then just from the console via twitch.
Anyways hope some of this is of help.
Looking forward to the event and more details going forward.
@Naegleria For the run that did get in there could be a bid war for the costume choices btw, we can talk more about that over twitter or whatever method you prefer.
¤How do you learn a new game? Playing through it multiple times to gain understanding of the basics of the game, usually afterwards or during said playthrough watching other runs if available can also help.
¤How do you practice? Playing through the game using the route(s) and at some sections stopping to practice things such as mechanics or tricks, to better subsequent playthroughs in the future,
¤Do you set goals? If so, then how? No goals at first just finish the game fully with a proper route, Then look for improvements one at a time to focus on such as getting the basics of the route down pat. And eventually moving on to advance things such as tricks or even glitches etc.
¤Do you have a personal philosophy or method? Not really just play it how I feel comfortable doing so and if it does not work well enough alter a bit and try other things till things seem better.
¤Do you take it seriously or casually? I always try to play in a casual mind set which helps me remain a bit more calm and allot more laid back for when errors happen as It will allow me time to catch and understand them or comment on them to myself or others on why errors had happened and what could have been done to correct them. Being to serious for me usually breaks my focus allot more as when things go wrong which is always possible it undermines your attitude and will to continue playing.
¤At what point to you post your first time? After several runs through the game and when I'm comfortable with the performance is normally when I think its time to post a run. This will varies per person as we all have a different mind set and I normally want to get it down to a consistent time before I post a run.
¤Do you wanna be the very best? Not if it means I will not enjoy the game as much when I continue to play it. If I cannot enjoy it and be good at it then no, I will just continue to play and do as best or better then I did last time.
¤Do you ever stop purely practicing, only playing for PBs? At some points just going for PB's is good practice but also following through with a run helps with consistences more so then just resetting all the time for a better overall start, because the end will normally be poor. At least that's how its been for me.
¤If so, then at what point do you feel that you don't need to practice? I don't think practice is something you ever stop every time you play the game you gain some sort of knowledge as you played it for what ever the results were.
¤Do you play multiple games? Yes but not to many that I do runs on as it would be hard to pull away from a game to long to play another and or just get confused with multiple games controls among the fewest issues other then confusing routes if the games are similar.
¤When do you decide to stop playing a game? When I stop enjoying the game and running it or playing it casually, is normally the point where I'm done with the game. This rarely happens tho because I find was to comeback to most games either for casual play, challenges or running them.
¤What motivates you to keep going? Just the will of wanting to do better at the games/route and getting a solid and consistent time even if its only a PB. After that its wanting to improve with there is all ways room to since we are human and mistakes or errors happen. Nothing is ever perfect unless your a machine and your imperfect with is what replicates from us being human.
¤Do you go back to games that you already stopped playing? Eventually if I forgotten most of the game or I want to revisit a game because its something to do I get around to it.
¤What motivates you to get back into a game? If I enjoyed the game at some point playing it or it was interesting enough to play, It's normally enough for me. Most times tho its because I want to try something different like a challenge while playing it. Speedrunning a game in general is what I consider a self challenge and should be motivation enough as long as your playing something you enjoy, Else your doing it for the wrong reasons. At least to my opinion that is.
Anyways I hope some of this information is helpful to someone maybe, I'm still fairly new to the scene I've only been running games going on 2 years now, And a small number at that.
I would suggest watching a show called PsychoPass its getting a full second season release very very soon, and I loved the first Season and its got the Gore and all sorts or crazy people and crazy story going on worth the watch for sure.
Casual atm I normally playing: 7 days to die, Nier(JPN), XCom 2, SC2, SC:BW, Hearthstone, D3. Occasionally if I can stand clunky controls and the fact it has co-op PSone version of Diablo. Recently started to play Shadow Hearts, recommended to me as a series. They lent me the games to play and I'm really Enjoy the first one thus far. I do wanna go back to playing FFX just to get it done and never again hopefully, and also finish a revisit to Legend of Legaia that I found again awhile back.
Just wanna find a game called Omega Boost now.........
Tech or explanations on what is going on or even going into detail on diferent possible outcomes of things as you do them is always nice to give them idea of what is correct or wrong when preforming a run or even a trick etc in the game being presented.
Normally I talk about what I'm about to do as well as what I should be expecting to happen if done correctly as I do it, Alternatively if it fails or something has to be done instead, Explaining what alternatives or why it did not work is helpful for yourself as a pep talk and reminder and also informative to others that may watch the run later or during and possibly lead to more interaction about the game and whats going on etc.
Mainly just talk about the game or what ever is currently going on or relevant, If that is boring or not interesting for you then talk about other things that can still allow you to focus and still be interactive.
I attempted FF8 got like almost 9 hours into it but never got to finish, but will return to it one day after I relearn some stuff.
I constantly do around 4 hour runs in Nier being my longest game in general, besides that normally just some quickie Onechanbara runs no more then hr or so tops.
Envy to those that do full FF game runs and other long games more then a few hours long.
Takes allot more effort into doing well in longer games, not to mention allot more time in general over the whole experience to even improve by just margins at a time. Always nice to play shorter games most times then really long ones, time is normally your enemy always as a runner.
providing us an example of what game you were trying to stream would also give an idea of whether or not your specs are an issue or just how obs or things are set up. Also making sure you have properly set up your encoding and upload bit rate is important.
With the New site layout etc I will be looking at re-setting up the ILs better and the missions so that they are better sorted when submitting those. If you are running the game for ILs or Missions please let me know before you attempt to submit as only the Full game runs are set up somewhat correctly atm. <3
This process for gradient names is mainly just a perk for supporting the site, I didn't even know about the gradient name thing till afterwards I donated. Also it took about a week before Pac contacted me back directly through e-mail reply about thanking for the donation. Just be patient but going about it with a topic like this is now a proven way to get something that is more of a reward for the generosity and not a paid service. Please donate responsibly and for the right reasons.
make sure that you have a run of the game yourself of the game before you put in the request and that you can fill out as much of the information that is asked for in the submission forum. Also you will need to wait after submitting as it will take time for a site mod to look at the request, about a week most times. Anyways enjoy your time speed running.
Actually I did not look at the time stamp at all so that would be my fault, but also commenting on that does not help the issue either. If this a problem to you then sorry, but I do not see any harm from it, and honestly I don't care about post counts. delete them or w.e needs be.
from what your saying now is that your disagree with people being able to request a game and them not having a run for it to be allowed mod? correct me if I'm wrong but your saying that just cause someone doesn't run the game they should not mod for it? I though this was originally about providing proof for runs submitted to games?
If this is about whether someone should mod a game or not, I think it comes down to not just if they run the game, but more so If they are very knowledgeable about it. I think knowledgeable people of the games not just runners can be just as good as mods if not better then a runner themselves.
Well you guys all work hard on the site and I applaud for that as I'm as ware of the complexity that this can become with coding into site or api's etc. Some simple things to most can be very complicated to others when put into the other court.
It can take a week or two before it will be added and having all the information that was requested be filled out as best as possible and that you have done runs your self and supplied links of them along with the requests will allow them to look it over and go through the steps they need to take to add it if it was within the guidelines they follow.
Also keep in mind that there is only a few actual admins/mods that have that kind of power to add it as they manage the whole site and have life and priorities above a game request to do first just give them ample time and patience and eventually it will be addressed.
