Since it's doing no processing just extending an electrical signal no

Although the nerdy answer is TECHNICALLY yes, since it extends the cable, but since electricity runs at 299,792,458 meters per second (depending on the gauge of the wire, thanks Google), or roughly 670 million miles per hour... safe to say it won't be noticeable

But the practical answer to your question is no. It won't cause any additional input lag. The only thing that causes extra input lag would be something that requires processing, or changing of any way, the signal.

1-1 Flagpole Glitch (DISCLAIMER: This is not practical to add to a run until trying for roughly a low 4:57) See youtube.com/watch?v=ucBAwdS3YB4 for full tutorial

You must land on the 3rd block from the top on the first pixel while not holding "B" - on the first frame with mario in the "running" animation (as opposed to the jump/falling animation), you hold only right (not "A" or "B"), then for exactly the next 2 frames, hold "B", then do a full jump on the 3rd frame (as shown). Hold all inputs until the jump is completed. By the time you reach the flagpole block, you will need to release "A" and "B", and hold "left" for exactly 3 frames (as shown), then jump on the 4th frame. If you do the first "jump" half of the trick correctly, you will clip into the block assuming you do a full jump, even if you mess up the "second" part. If you do not clip into the block, it means you messed up the jump.

Frame counter will obviously be different depending on your pace - as long as you hit the first pixel on the block, it doesn't matter if you do a full or partial jump. In order to "save" the framerule, you will need to be 4 frames from perfect on the coin pipe section, which means that some "380"s will not be fast enough to save the rule. Credit to runner "Sockfolder" for finding out exact inputs for an RTA run.

The switch doesn't emulate NES framerate properly... Complain to them, not to the leaderboard site.

You can convert it in your own head to know what the run "would have been" if it were played on more accurate hardware. However, it's an ever so slight advantage actually to have a slower framerate. It definitely won't and shouldn't be converted to faster than it actually runs.

There are lots of switch and open emu runs on the leaderboard and they're all recorded at their actual speed... Which is slower than nes.

To add to what Roopert said - the world warp code is fully legal in any% or warpless. It's obviously not used very much in any%, except the much slower times... however, in Warpless, probably any time over roughly 26 minutes probably uses a continue code - look at any warpless run on the leaderboard around 40 minutes and see how many times they use that continue code... lots

Continue codes are also used all the time in Warpless tournaments. It's often used strategically to "refill" lives... for instance, if you only have 1 life and kill bowser in 4-4, you'd likely intentionally die while entering 5-1, and use the world code to re-enter 5-1 with three lives, instead of one... at only maybe a ten second loss.

Speedrun.com leaderboard for this game operates on a white list rather than black list... Or in other words, it's not whats illegal its what systems ARE legal.

Original NES, Famicom or FDS Original NES or Famicom with Everdrive or Powerpak Wii, Wii U, Switch and 3DS Virtual Console FCEUX, Nestopia, Bizhawk, OpenEMU, Mesen NES Classic Edition Analogue NT Mini

Those are the approved hardware according to the rules.

So unfortunately no - it wouldn't be accepted

However you can download an approved emulator and play fairly easily in a computer

Aah I figured since you hit that front stairs Koopa it means you hesitated... I didn't even know that was possible. Thought the only full speed route through was the normal one. Interesting... It looks kinda cool

This was after a death - which changes things, also you hit the Koopa in the opening stairs, with what looked like a small slowdown

But yeah odd to have the plant despawned.

Given that a 14 year old in 1985 that started playing the game with zero knowledge would probably hit the pixel multiple times during a few playthroughs (without knowing what was happening) I would think surely it's not a "glitch" in the spirit of glitchless category. It's too common accidentally with normal playthrough.

Additionally, it actually costs you time rather than benefitting you in any way.

Now... If you use this mechanic to JUMP on the pixel then you're in the "glitch" territory in the spirit of glitchless category.

These are just my thoughts

You would never have this apply in glitchless in 8-4... Because why would you jump there?... However in 1-1 underground you can often hit the "wall jump" pixel while falling, and in the turnaround in 4-2 to the pipes you can often hit the pixel. I feel fairly certain both would be allowed in glitchless... But I'm not a mod

Oklahoma, USADarpey5 years ago

Physics should be exactly the same in the @pellsson rom vs the actual game as far as I know

Edit: based on comments below, my above statement seems to be not true, at least for this particular version

I believe almost every "seam" in bricks can be clipped through. It's how "4-2 blazit" and fast 1-2 work... it's also how fpg and full fpg (bbg) work, by clipping into a block. And the 4-4 clip in the new warpless WR.

None-the-less, it's always satisfying to do.

@Mars02 the problem with BBG as I understand it (which admittedly is not fully) is that there are two places to do it... the shot in world 7, and 8-2... world 8 saves two rules and AT ITS BEST is only 50/50 chance of success... and practically is at best like 25-30% (and that would be an impressive success rate)... and it's world 8... ewwww... and the world seven is even worse... only saves one rule

This proposed trick saves two rules in world 3

@B1GEY3DPYTH0N usually i'd agree with you... but it's a TWO framerule trick that takes place in the first third of the run, which is pretty sexy at the level of optimization that the top 2-3 runners are. Also, the only really "hard" trick done before it is 1-1 fpg - and a couple fast castle levels... seems like a logical next step to me

The bigger issue would be whether or not Kosmic / Ace (or whoever else joins the sub-19 capable crew) CARE to push warpless... since the 18 minute thereshold has been broken. It's psychologically cool to break into the 18's... it's less rewarding to push an additional half second for a TREMENDOUS amount of effort.

That being said, I hope either of them please please please do it... it's super entertaining to watch.

Even if it's a difficult trick... it effectively replaces TWO tricks in another level... AND it's in world 3 - which is still relatively early.

@periwinkle ooooh yeah that totally makes sense - what a fantastic place to do FPG - for a full 70% of a second

KilleDragon to się podoba
Oklahoma, USADarpey5 years ago

How on earth does it save 2 framerules? doesn't FPG itself save less frames than a single rule?

"The screen wrap glitch is frowned upon because it's an actual glitch in the game." @beardylocks

This glitch would be smiled upon... It's super cool. Any% welcomes any and all glitches that could be done on the original system hardware. Bbg and fpg would also definitely qualify as" actual glitches"

The reason people don't do that glitch is that unfortunately it's slower than the bumping (or blazit) forward pushing wrong warp.

Personally if it were equal timesave to do the bumps or the screenwrap I'd do screenwrap... Because swag. I feel I can safely speak for the faster runners also and say they'd prioritize swag over functionality all framerules being equal... Why do you think most of them do the pipe jumps in 4-1 even though there's a slight death risk - it looks cool.

Thinj about it... To the untrained eye, the bumping doesnt even look abnormal - except thinking "why is that runner bumping against the wall? Doesn't that slow you down?" and they likely don't even remember where the pipe is supposed to warp you to anyway. But the screen wrap... "WTF MARIO JUST TELEPORTED"

anytime you can make a new viewer think to themselves "wtf"... You've accomplished half the goal of speedrunning.

Semi off topic rant over

https://www.speedrun.com/smb1/run/m3dno36z watch how @Arcus does the jump in 8-2 you're referring to in his 4:58.3 run back in July of 2017

Oklahoma, USADarpey5 years ago

You want to specifically avoid that pixel - it'll lose you a framerule typically. @Tecate taught me a good setup to NOT get it. Do a full jump when the front of Mario's leg passes the middle of the second cloud bump. No pixel :)
