Such an interesting glitch, shame it can't really be utilized in any major category.

@Marikh - could you (or someone who understands this) explain (1) why the vine death as mario impacts luigi at all, and (2) how this leads to a faster any% time? I see the vine death, and then Luigi playing 1-1, but that's all the video shows.

All you said is true and I'm sure it works. The problem is that you lose the predictability of the last four hammer Brothers. If you bump at the END, you can know exactly what these four will do assuming you haven't slowed down in any way. If you bump where you're proposing you've effectively reshuffled the rng. So now you can unavoidably die if one jumps with a hammer in their face. The nice thing about 8-3 when you know your rule is it transforms one of the hardest levels (or at least easiest to die on) to trivial, once you know what the last four Bros will do.

All that being said if your pb is 5:02 or so or slower... You probably don't know what the hammer bro patterns will be anyway - so that sounds like a good strategy to use in that case if it works for you. Or in a tournament when you're on a pace you're not familiar with.

There is a luigi category on Lost Levels, but that's because Luigi's physics are actually different. In smb1 - he is literally the same as mario... just green. And when he's fire luigi he looks the EXACT same

TBH, I kinda feel for luigi, I wish he had more of a showing in this game - but since there's zero difference between mario and luigi, it doesn't make sense. It would just be any% Co-Op, but you have to die with mario first.

As long as you have your live game play filmed you're legal to submit. A camera recording your screen may not be ideal but it works.

You can use any controller, so long as it doesn't give you any advantage in any way over the original nes controller

With regard to splits. You don't HAVE to split, although it can be useful for your benefit. Without a pc in not aware of a way to do this. But it's honestly not really useful until you get close to the 5 minute mark anyway (for the purpose of predicting otherwise "random" behavior)

Good luck!

There are lots of good emulators to choose from - I can guarantee RetroArch will not be approved in any way. Just choose a different one.

aah yeah, not the classic - gv-usb2 works with component cables or svideo

KilleDragon to się podoba

It sure can be - but iirc it only saves one framerule. The problem with adding it is that it's so late in a run, you'd have to be on world record pace, and it's a difficult trick (or at least easy to fail) for "only" one framerule

8-2 BBG saves two framerules if you get optimal shot, so double the benefit for the same work.

The GV-USB2 is $35 on Amazon and works great for capturing sound for use in a program like OBS from the NES console.

@darG not agreeing with OP necessarily but pal is different than the other versions that run at 60fps exactly. In those cases the game just runs ever so slightly slower... But in pal's case, Mario actually acts differently. He jumps longer, he moves farther forward on a backwards jump against an object (4-2 two bump is pretty easy to do) 8-2 staircase is literally impossible without slowing down. There are many physical differences. Including the possibility of full fpg (the one done with bullet bill glitch) on every level. So not saying that it should or shouldn't be a category... But you wouldn't have to make a different cat for switch and openemu and all the other versions that run slightly differently, since their physics is all identical to the NES console

Well definitely not the clip in 1-2 .... unless you want to go for top 5 on the leaderboards - that's literally the last thing you'd add... after a few tens of thousands of attempts under your belt - and a low 4:56

learn an efficient 3 bump wrong warp for 4-2 (or even a fast 4 bump would be quite a bit faster than you're doing) ... and don't pause as much in 8-1

Learn to react to the bill at the end of 8-2... there's three things he can do, and you can react to them all... if your reaction time is fast enough.

Learn the "two pixel" wall jump in 8-4 - it's actually must easier than it seems

https://www.speedrun.com/smb1/guide/u49lr - here's some of the "tricks" in a sub-5 run although some of it is outdated... I've learned a lot about smb since making that guide

If you know what exact framerule you're on, you can know what they'll do and react accordingly (like, you might know that the LAST one will jump, so you just go underneath him) - but I'm assuming you're early enough learning the game that you won't know...

So

If mario collides with an enemy when he is moving DOWNWARD, he'll kill the enemy, regardless of where he is on the enemy. It looks kinda funny sometimes - you can literally be below an enemy, but as long as you're moving DOWN when your hitboxes touch, you'll kill the enemy.

So - you need to jump early enough (especially on bros #2 and 4) that you can LET OFF jump if they jump... so you'll be falling as you touch.

If you do it right, you'll be able to enter a random framerule, and get past the bros most of the time.

Sometimes you'll just be SOL and die anyway - mostly because the bro has a hammer right in front of his face.

Oh wow - they sell theirs for $35... If I had known about buying one for that price there's no way I would have made my own

I probably spent almost that much in materials... and then had to buy a soldering gun, and learn to solder.

Really good price.

Side note - you're going to have to delay the VIDEO and AUDIO on OBS if you want sync between the controller display and the video display... If memory serves, on mine it was like 400ms delay to get it perfect, but just play around with numbers... otherwise there will be an apparent lag between the display and the inputs on screen

Discord is a really good place to ask those kinds of questions - Click on the link to the left, then "smb1" - there's a regular, and more informal discussion constantly taking place where people would be glad to answer questions like those.

Once you film it, assuming it ends up including smb1 - if you wouldn't mind please provide a link to the completed video, I know many of us would be interested in viewing it.

Now I've actually seen a video of this hack - and I'm curious - are the physics different? is it JUST a visual change? or is there a fundamental physics change along with the "pixelation" - at least watching this it LOOKS like it's the exact same game, just with modified graphics. If it's literally the same game with different graphics, I would agree that it probably doesn't warrant its own category - since it's literally the same thing, just with different graphics. But I'm not in charge of any of that.

The place it would go would be "Rom Hacks" - since they did an overhaul of speedrun.com to have nested categories for games --> "Super Mario Series" contains all the smario games --> "Super Mario Bros." is the primary landing page, including our primary five categories, then it further splits into category extensions... which are just smb1 but different rulesets, or "romhacks" which is exactly what this is - it isn't a category extension.

There are currently 9 romhacks on the board, and the mod list for each hack is independent of super mario bros. - there are three games with only one submission, and the most submitted romhack (super luigi bros) has.... eleven...

The rules for submitting new games into the "Super Mario" can be viewed BELOW

https://www.speedrun.com/requestgame?series=mario

and along with other things, they state that you must have a video of yourself completing your proposed category in your game along with the submission.

Go to the link provided above, and click the button "Single Game" and fill out the fields - in the additional notes, you'd indicate that it's a romhack for super mario bros.

That's what I could figure out with a little searching.

@YourFreeChicken "No, he shouldn't be learning it at all. It is a huge waste of time to learn a hard trick that you won't use for a few months and perhaps years. I would advise to stop learning fpg, and spend all that time wasted on fpg on things that will help you forever, such as 380 underground in 1-1, the precise jumps in 1-2, etc. GL on future runs "

I'd fundamentally disagree with you here - the reasoning for what you're saying is for pure learning efficiency. If you're approaching life with this rationale, great... but why are you playing mario AT ALL? you could be working and earning money, or learning another language, or doing SOMETHING "productive".

The reason people play this game is for FUN - The whole point of getting a completed run, then a 5:30, then a 5:15, 5:10, 5:02, then THE MIGHTY SUB FIVE RUN - is self improvement and fun. It doesn't really matter. If you find learning FPG fun then imo that's just as valid as trying to improve your time.

That being said, learning FPG before you have at least a 4:58 or 4:57 is sub-optimal for the best time/improvement ratio for improving your mario time... but who cares? if it seems fun and cool to learn FPG go for it. Otherwise you shouldn't play NES Mario in the first place, since it, also, is suboptimal for life looking through that lens. If you think it's fun to learn, go for it. Clip into those blocks.

Cheers.
