Just post data here. Category definitions? Amiibo effects? Take your time game has just been released but try to use thread to centralize stuff so we can get an idea on how to create the leaderboard

I wanna say this can be handled easily, if on console you wouldn't select emulator, site does it for us tbh. This is the only game in star fox series that allows emulators, so very simple fix here

So there needs to be more information out there, it's really bare, only shows difficulties and timing method.

Star Fox 2 is an unofficial game, therefore it is under the impression that unofficial emulation is the standard for this game. That being said, "Reproduction cartridges" would technically be considered the "emulated" version of this game.

So, a few things needed so others can run the game how they see, as well as making leaderboard newer runner friendly as well.

  1. What is the standardized emulator used for this game?

  2. Are reproduction cartridges allowed for this game?

  3. Standardized rom?

All this info would need to be in the default rules list for this game.

My thoughts on each are as followed:

Standardized emulator -

Pick one and ensure all runs use this same one. Does it have to be accurate? Not really, but once again this game was only "released" through unofficial means, so a lightweight emulator w/ bad accuracy compared to a heavy emulator (bizhawk?) are some factors and things that need discussed. I always want accuracy when it comes to emulation, but this game is a unique case.

Reproduction cartridges -

I'm very console biased so I think they should be allowed, but from testing from me (and probably others), emulation will always be faster for this game since this game uses the FX chip. Not worth assuming until data can be crunched, but maybe a sub category of "console / emulator name" may be worth it if all else fails.

Rom -

Idk I don't know anything about this.

So yeah, we need to tidy up the way stuff is for this board just figure out what emulator works best for this game, also we'd need a way to link to the roms / emulators used once things are finalized. However, we can't link directly to rom sites for legal reasons, so a sorta middle man site would be needed.

None of my ideas are worth keeping if not wanted, that's why this thread was created, to discuss how to go about making leaderboard look better as well as officially standardize stuff for people wanting to join community.

HUGE NOTE: DO NOT link to any rom sites, nor are you to do the "site DOT com" route. I recommend avoiding linking to any site at all, or at very least post the links far away from this website (i.e use the discord yo)

I retract my statement them, I didn't think series moderators would act like this (assumed it was a submit new game from new runner kinda thing)

discussione: The Site
Pennsylvania, USAzewing9 years ago

This is why only series moderators should add a new game (if in a series).

Leaderboards have a check that states "video required for submissions" there is no excuse to not have this checked. I refuse to acknowledge anyone ahead of me in any game I run if they have no video. I've had this bullshit pulled on me by some Nico runner for mega man x3, and I won't do it now

I agree with Auddy, instead of allowing moderators power to edit posts, they should only be able to flag them for offensive stuff. I can already see abuse happening where real conversations are trying to happen and instead of there being an opposition, it's "all suspiciously in agreement."

To put it further, someone else could edit and have said user saying vulgar offensive things, which would "sway" any admin coming in to quell a situation to believe the super mod (i.e the asshat editing the posts) instead of the community members being tampered with

Just worth mentioning here that all this is volunteer work, from the moderators to the site admins / site moderators.

Tidied up the leaderboard a bit more (fixed grammar errors), included additional rule for Level 3 100% warpless due to 1.0 cartridge not producing 100% score in Fortuna, and changed Any% to "Out Of This Dimension."

In addition, changed the default look to Level 1 warps instead of "Out of this dimension." Let me know if any more changes need includes, any rules I missed, etc.

I get what you mean, at least in this game there is no standard to call stuff (like, any%, 100%).

So, just thinking about it, we can rename any% the following:

Out Of This Dimension Secret Ending Secret Warp

If ya'll can figure out a name to call it that all can at least agree to it can happen, reply with other possible names or post what name you think it should be

Leaderboard now has sub categories. If there are runs missing, submit them and we'll verify, me and Lowkeeee did our best but some runs weren't able to be saved due to twitch. Dates were not saved so if you want your dates accurate edit them (or beat that run ;3 )

Thoughts, comments, or anything to say about leaderboard? How are the rules? If changes need made let us know here so we can fix it.

Just worth a discussion since I'm going to all the star fox games that could potentially have sub categories and fixing up the leaderboards. It may be that this game won't need them but that's what I want to discuss.

SF64 has an N64 version, a Wii VC version, and an IQue version, each with its own set of lag reduction strats for each. So, would you guys think it's worthwhile making subcategories that specify which console is used? In essence it exactly the way it looks now, just with a 2nd line the shows what Platform was used.

Pennsylvania, USAzewing9 years ago

Each console needs tested multiple times for loads, doing it once isn't enough. It's also recommended to keep a list of load times per loading screen for every attempt so we can see how long each loading zone / screen takes.

Pennsylvania, USAzewing9 years ago

That's pretty nice to see inactive mods TheGAmeiro feels bad trying to get stuff done but I'll try and talk to them since I'm a nice guy

Pennsylvania, USAzewing9 years ago

For the sake of at least starting some forward progress, are there people who can test the loading times across the entire run of people who use a 39000 PS2, 70000 PS2 (or 77000 PS2 it's the same just special edition afaik), and 90K model PS2 to get a baseline for how a PS2 varies amongst loads? After that compare it to what my run has on the PS3. Ideally, runs on PS2 would get a time reduction per see since they have longer loads.

For either instance, these runs loading need to be consistent across same console over multiple runs. If this can be true then simple conversions can be used as long as runners state what console model they ran with.

If this is not true, then I think we should vote / comment on possibility of loading removal from runs via manual retiming. That way we can have 2 timing methods: Standard RTA (for reference), and Time W/o Loads (Leaderboard main timing method).

The PS3 was released well before the guy did his run, his run was from 2015, I think PS3's have been out longer than that lol

I understand what you are trying to say, but every community listed (except lost levels) are terrible examples.

Mega Man community converts lag amongst game, something you can't quantify since lag is based on how long hitboxes are in contact with enemies (at least in x4, X5/ X6 has igt), how long a screen is lagging, and how many times dash lag shows up. They also convert PSX times and PC times as one. Every single PSX model and every single PS2 model loads the game differently. Even PS3 playing PS1 and the various PSN's load differently, but are dependant on many factors they never bother to quanity (did runner use PSTV? Did runner has solid state drive? Is runners PC garbage?). PC's load the game differently, yet there is a single conversion number with known inaccuracy. I don't think it's right to ever have inaccuracy in conversions because it makes one of those platforms unintentionally "optimal" instead of "equal"

SM64 is the epic "shit on you for playing on VC since it takes less skill." Who has the right to say what version is less skillful.

About laziness? It's nice to have human error for factoring out loading zones, always nice to have a time be slower because the person doing the conversion is either biased or bad at math. So yeah, Non PC communiites are terrible, but PC has advantage of at least running scripts / programs that calculate time w/o load that is insanely accurate. Give that to the playstation community and I'm sure every single person would be on board, but inaccuracy should never be accepted. I'm sure everyone will love to have to manually time out loading just to put runs on a website.

One final thing but in essence by stating the whole loading and conversion thing, you'd effectively force runners to local record at native console FPS and / or get a 60fps webcam and all the loading zones must be captured. There is no simple solution when dealing with aging consoles. Stuff must be done manually, and I don't think there's enough man power dedicated to watching runs down to the frame to find out how long each loading zone lasted.

Grats on adding relevant text to this i_o_l

Optimizing a speedrun and optimizing a time is different. If we were only about optimizing a speedrun, then why aren't we having judges that look at runs and say "yeah this run looks better lets place it at #1"

Oh wait, we can't do that because not every game has IGT, not every game is Super Mario Bros. Better hardware is always going to be used regardless of what people think, and people can run on whatever legitimate platform they want. Litearlly no one cares about being that guy who has the best ever PS1 speedrun but lost 5 hours due to slow loading. He should be #1 though!

Too impractical to implement a removal of load times. Human error is a major factor. In addition, both you and Nub_hat were inactive from this leaderboard for months at a time. If, for instance, by some possibility removal of loading happens, every single run must manually be re-timed. This would mean if a run ever drops frames through load zones, run must be rejected.

Also, because of this reasoning, what happens when these rules put up and you both just up and leave again? Fenrijay would be forced to do work no one even can do accurately.

Also PS3's only cost about 150 total, which is less than a 90K model JP ps2 that some people go out and buy. 90K english / PAl is obviously cheaper but price should never be a reason as to why something is allowed / disallowed / complained about

Also the issue with Tropical Freeze is Solid State Drives, where runners download the game to it via external USB cable to produce faster loads. That's on the dumb end of going fast, completely out of context to what is going on here.

The "equivalent" would be running on a 90K model PS2 instead of a 39000 model PS2, but for some reason the 90K model Ps2 is "too hard" for me to search on ebay and buy
