I used VBA-RR because that's what the TAS community used, but Bizhawk is more recommended. I couldn't personally tell any difference between them in terms of timing, but maybe there is something.

If you're playing on GBA, you can't use the Double Pack version for Juste because the door glitch and cutscene glitch don't work on it, and save-warps take longer. You're going to need a lot of save-state practice anyway so you're going to get used to the emulator controls and want to do runs on that.

Hi, I'm the main Juste runner. I made the route and everything, so I'm the one to ask about anything Juste-related. Juste isn't nearly as popular as Maxim and the 3 runs listed are the top times of the only serious runners. Chihilon made a run a long time ago on nicovideo, then I came and pushed the time down a lot, and PK recently copied my route. There's more resources in a thread on Speed Demos Archive and in descriptions and comments on my youtube channel, but there's no comprehensive guide on how to do anything. I've been meaning to make one, but it would be really complicated with lots of small tricks, and the route kept changing for a while so I didn't get around to it.

If you're just getting into speedrunning then I recommend you steer clear of Juste honestly. The run has a lot of inconsistent skips that depend on subpixels, small frame-window tricks, and potential hardlocks. And you need to get every skip right to even finish a single run. I also made the routes with only getting the fastest time in mind, not getting any decent times, so unless you're good with all the skips a different route would be better, but I didn't make any routes for that. There are 2 older routes that are easier you can try on my youtube channel, which are the 28:34 and 41:05 runs, but they're not optimized with newer techniques. The 28:34 probably resembles a lot what a more beginner-friendly any% Juste route would look like if I made one, and the 41:05 probably resembles what would be a No Out of Bounds route. There's also a Bad Ending route which is basically the same as any% but ends halfway through, which makes it easier.

If you're still interested despite my warnings, I can answer any questions. I should make a guide for these things anyway, so it's not any trouble.

I tried a few times and couldn't get it to work so I'm giving up now. Maybe I'll try again later, I don't know.

You can run it without an auto splitter. Just start the timer at -3.68 when you restart and stop it a little after killing shrek. Then go back and look at the video to get a more accurate time. If the time you give is off, I'll look at the video and time it from the first non-black frame to when shrek dies.

Anyway, I looked into how to make an auto splitter and it might not be too hard. I found shrek's health using Cheat Engine, which is giving me some very interesting data, like that the shotgun can do max damage from not very close range. I'll try making an auto splitter, but if I run into any difficulties I'll give up very quickly, so don't count on it.

Timing generally ends at some ending cutscene, "final hit on final boss", or "loss of character control." Final hit on final boss is really shorthand for triggering the ending, because if there was a way to skip the final boss to the credits that was discovered, in almost all cases the skip would still be considered finishing the game and the timer would end there.

I intuitively thought of swagnemite popping up as the ending cutscene and the old any% WR-holder did too since he stopped the timer there. But since the time after killing shrek until the end is always the same it wasn't really necessary to keep track of the time after killing him. So time can end at killing shrek for any%. Implicitly it might as well end at swagnemite or when the game closes.

But with 100%, the goal is more than just killing shrek and you can still move around after killing him, so the timing-specifics are important to what route is optimal. Because I thought of swagnemite as being when timing implicitly ended in any% I used that for 100%. I thought it would be arbitrary to stop the time at shrek instead.

Even then, you can still move around and pick up weapons even after swagnemite comes up, so the real loss of character control is when the game closes and maybe the timer should really end there instead. It would make little practical difference since it's so hard to navigate then, but that would be the least arbitrary choice I think.

So it really could be anything. I just picked the one that seemed right to me. If there was more competition or a more skilled run than mine using some other timing I would switch it to that.

Writing this made me rethink how good timing ending at the game-close is though. I think I'll make that be the timing for 100% instead of swagnemite now.

Still, I really don't think it counts as a speedrun when you run back around each room for an arbitrary amount of time. You can time it and run it, but then I'd call it a speed exhibition. Any amount of optimization means trying to cut down on time spent making sure you killed everyone, and then you'd run the risk of accidentally missing someone.

World record means absolutely nothing for this because the run has to be either unoptimized or unverifiable that it's valid.

@Racingmonster

The post I was referring to was from over a month ago, not the ones I just posted. But my point is that the mod isn't a super mod, so I'm requesting that either he or I become a super mod. The game has no super mod currently.

Hi, I want to be a moderator for Game of the year: 420BLAZEIT. I wanted to fix the rules and add a new category, so I posted in the forum and sent Twitch PMs, with no response. At the time there were 2 mods, but the one super moderator left and now there is no super mod.

I could probably have tried harder to contact the current mod by going through different channels, but it just seems more simple to become a mod myself. I don't care if I become mod or super mod, but I am much more active in the game than the current one--I have the best time vs. the current mod not having a run at all.

Again, there's no way to tell if you actually killed all enemies except for running around through every room again.

To prove my point, I think you missed one: in the room at 4:26, there are 6 enemies and I only see you kill 5, though it's hard to tell. There's a guy hidden away behind the boxes of mountain dew who didn't notice you because you took the left way around the room.

I really don't see the point but ok. If you want to do it, I think it should end when you get weed because otherwise you might as well just do Any%

I did a 100% run:

Please add the category or just make me a mod so I can do it. The rules for any% clearly don't match the runs anyway.

The problem with killing all enemies is there's no way to make sure you got every last one of them in a run, as far as I know. You'd have to run around the big rooms to make sure and that doesn't suit a run very well.

I actually thought about doing a 100% run before and I think the best way to define it would be to get all weapons. But there are two things I'm not sure about before I do one:

  • Does timing end when you kill shrek or when swagnemite comes up at the end?
  • Should you visit the smoke weed room?

The timing difference doesn't matter for any%, but for 100% it results in 2 different routes. If it's when you kill shrek then the strategy doesn't change much, you just get the other weapons. But if it's when swagnemite comes up, then you kill some enemies on the way to shrek to clear the way for later, snipe shrek, and run back to barely get the machine gun in accounting before it ends.

I'd like some decision on the these before I do one. Personally, I think it should end at swagnemite because you can still move around and get the other weapons at the ending monologue; and I think you should have to smoke weed for 100% because it's a special event that you can only trigger once.

btw, the weapons are: -Knife -Pistol -Sword -3 Machine Guns -Shotgun -Sniper Rifle I think that's it unless I'm missing some super-hidden one.
